Chapter 3 - The Key In The Coat Pocket

The air in the dining room felt instantly heavier, as if all the oxygen had been sucked out the moment Alessandro said those two words.

I do.

David staggered backward, bumping into the heavy mahogany table. His face was the color of ash.

“You... you own the equity firm?” David stammered, his eyes darting frantically between Alessandro and the accountant standing by the door.

Alessandro casually brushed a piece of ash from the silver serving tray where my forged loan document had just burned to a crisp.

“My family has many legitimate investments, David,” Alessandro said smoothly. “When your little LLC applied for a four-million-dollar loan, my underwriters approved it because the collateral—the three apartment complexes in the South Side—are highly lucrative.”

Alessandro took a step toward my husband, his dark eyes locking onto David’s terrified face.

“But my underwriters didn’t know you forged your wife’s signature,” Alessandro continued, his voice dropping to a lethal whisper. “And they certainly didn’t know you were using my family’s money to build a nest egg for my sister while leaving Claire to take the fall.”

David held up his hands in a desperate surrender. “Mr. Valenti, please. I can explain. The money is safe. I just needed to separate it from Claire so she couldn’t claim it in the divorce.”

“You’re a thief,” Alessandro stated coldly. “You stole from your wife. And worse, you lied to my sister. You told Elena you were a divorced, successful real estate developer. You’re a middle manager at a hardware store playing a dangerous game with money that doesn’t belong to you.”

Elena, still holding baby Samuel, let out a choked sob.

“David, how could you?” she cried, stepping away from him. “You told me you were building us a life!”

David reached for her. “Elena, sweetheart, I did this for us! For Samuel!”

“Don’t touch me!” she screamed, shrinking behind one of Alessandro’s security guards.

I stood frozen, my hands gripping the little blue sweater my mother had knitted. My mind was reeling. For thirteen years, I thought I was married to a boring, dependable man. I had worried about our grocery budget. I had clipped coupons.

And all this time, he had been laundering millions of dollars and leading a double life.

“Mr. Valenti,” David pleaded, panic finally breaking his composure. “I’ll give the money back. All of it. Just let me and Elena leave.”

Alessandro laughed. It wasn’t a happy sound.

“Elena isn’t going anywhere with you,” Alessandro said. He gestured to the accountant. “Transfer the four million from Samuel’s offshore trust directly into Claire’s personal account. Clear the LLC’s debt. Leave Morgan Holdings completely in Claire’s name.”

The accountant nodded, opening his leather briefcase right there on the dining table. He pulled out a laptop and began typing rapidly.

“No!” David shouted, lunging toward the table.

Two of Alessandro’s guards grabbed David by the shoulders, slamming him back against the wall.

“That’s my money!” David screamed, struggling against the massive men. “I built those properties! I earned that!”

I finally found my voice. It was shaking, but it was louder than I had spoken in years.

“You didn’t earn anything, David,” I said.

He stopped struggling, glaring at me with raw hatred.

I walked over to the table and picked up the red envelope Elena had brought. I pulled out the deed to the commercial shopping center in Oak Park.

“You built this empire using my credit,” I said, my voice trembling with a mixture of grief and rage. “You used my pristine credit score because you ruined yours before we even got married. You forged my name. You used the address of the house my parents left me to secure the initial loans.”

Tears spilled down my cheeks.

“I worked catering shifts on weekends so we could afford groceries, while you were closing million-dollar deals and buying a house with another woman.”

I dropped the deed onto the table.

“You didn’t just break my heart, David,” I whispered. “You stole my life.”

David sneered at me. “You’re nothing without me, Claire. You’re a dental receptionist. You don’t know how to run a real estate company. You’ll lose it all in a month.”

Alessandro stepped between us, shielding me from David’s vitriol.

“She won’t lose a dime,” Alessandro said softly. “Because my firm is going to manage the properties for her. Pro bono.”

David’s face twisted in sheer disbelief. “Why? Why are you helping her? She’s a nobody!”

Alessandro looked at me. His expression softened, the ruthless mafia boss vanishing for just a fraction of a second.

“Because she has more dignity in her little finger than you have in your entire body,” Alessandro replied.

He turned back to David.

“And because you tried to use my family dinner to destroy her.”

Alessandro nodded to his security chief. “Take him to the basement. Keep him there until the wire transfers clear.”

The guards began dragging David toward the side door.

“You can’t do this!” David screamed, his heels dragging against the polished hardwood floor. “Elena! Tell him to stop! I’m the father of your child!”

Elena turned her back to him, crying silently into Samuel’s blanket.

The door clicked shut, cutting off David’s screams.

The dining room fell into a heavy, exhausted silence. The remaining guests had quietly slipped out during the confrontation, leaving only me, Elena, Alessandro, and his men.

I stood by the table, staring at the empty space where my husband had just been.

My legs suddenly felt like lead. The adrenaline that had been keeping me upright vanished, leaving only a bone-deep exhaustion. I swayed, reaching for the back of a chair to steady myself.

Alessandro was there instantly.

He didn’t grab me roughly. He gently placed a hand beneath my elbow, supporting my weight.

“Sit down, Claire,” he murmured, pulling out a chair.

I sank into it, burying my face in my hands. The tears I had been fighting finally broke free. I sobbed for my broken marriage. I sobbed for the baby I had lost. And I sobbed for the absolute terrifying reality of waking up tomorrow completely alone.

“I’m so sorry,” Elena whispered, pulling a chair next to mine.

I looked up at her. Her makeup was ruined, her beautiful dress wrinkled where Samuel had slept against her.

“You didn’t know,” I said softly, wiping my eyes. “He manipulated both of us.”

Elena shook her head, fresh tears spilling over her lashes.

“But I did know, Claire,” she confessed, her voice breaking. “I told you... I found out he was married two months ago.”

I frowned, the sting of betrayal returning. “Why didn’t you leave him then? Why let him buy my house?”

Elena looked down at her sleeping son.

“Because of the coat,” she whispered.

I stared at her. “What coat?”

Elena reached into the diaper bag resting beneath her chair. She pulled out a heavy, dark winter coat. It was David’s. I recognized the missing button on the left cuff—I had meant to sew it back on last week.

“I was packing his things for a weekend trip,” Elena explained, her voice trembling. “I reached into the pocket to check for his keys. And I found this.”

She reached into the pocket of the coat and pulled out a small, velvet jewelry box.

She handed it to me.

“I thought it was an engagement ring,” Elena cried. “I thought he was finally going to propose. So I opened it.”

My hands shook as I took the box. It was old, the velvet worn at the corners.

I popped the lid open.

Inside wasn’t a diamond ring.

It was a small, silver locket.

My heart stopped.

I knew this locket. My grandmother had given it to me when I was sixteen. I had worn it every day until four years ago, when I lost it during the frantic rush to the hospital the night I miscarried.

I had been devastated. David told me it must have fallen off in the ambulance.

I picked it up. My fingers brushed the tiny clasp, popping it open.

Inside the locket was a tiny, folded piece of ultrasound paper. The only picture of the baby I had lost.

“He had it the whole time,” I whispered, my voice breaking completely. “He hid it from me.”

Elena wiped her cheeks. “I confronted him about it. He told me it belonged to his ex-wife. He said you were obsessed with a baby that wasn’t even his.”

I froze.

The air in my lungs turned to ice.

I looked up at Elena, my vision blurring with tears.

“What did you just say?” I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Alessandro stepped forward, his expression suddenly dark and dangerous.

Elena looked terrified. “He said... he said the baby you lost wasn’t his. He said you had an affair, and that’s why you separated.”

I stared at the tiny ultrasound picture in the locket.

“I never had an affair,” I said softly.

I looked at Alessandro.

“I never had an affair,” I repeated, my voice rising in panic. “David was the only man I ever...”

My words trailed off.

A horrifying, sickening thought slammed into my mind.

If David had lied to Elena about my pregnancy... what else had he lied about regarding his own fertility?

I looked at little Samuel, sleeping peacefully in Elena’s arms.

Then I looked at the little blue sweater in my lap.

“Elena,” I whispered, my hands trembling violently. “How did you get pregnant?”

Elena blinked, confused by the sudden change in my tone. “What do you mean? We tried for a few months, and then it happened.”

“He didn’t use a clinic?” I asked, my voice rising. “He didn’t need treatments?”

“No,” Elena said, shaking her head. “He said he was perfectly healthy.”

I stood up so fast my chair tipped backward, crashing onto the floor.

“For eleven years,” I screamed, the realization tearing through my chest like a gunshot. “For eleven years, David told me I was the reason we couldn’t get pregnant! He made me take the injections! He made me go through the surgeries!”

Alessandro caught my shoulders as my knees gave out.

“Claire, breathe,” he commanded, his strong grip keeping me upright.

But I couldn’t breathe.

I looked at the ultrasound in the locket.

“I wasn’t the one who was infertile,” I sobbed, collapsing against Alessandro’s chest. “He was.”

The room went dead silent.

Elena stared at me, then down at the baby in her arms.

“But... if David is infertile,” Elena whispered, her face going completely white.

May you like

She looked up at her brother.

“Alessandro... whose baby is this?”
