Chapter 2 - THE TRUTH BEHIND THE SMILING PHOTOGRAPH

I stared at the photograph on the polished walnut table.

My mother, smiling brightly. But she wasn't alone. Standing next to her was a man I had never seen before—a man with the exact same piercing gray eyes as Jack Whitmore.

"That's my father," Jack said, his voice dropping to a whisper that commanded the massive room. "Taken twenty-seven years ago."

My mind raced. "My mother never knew your family. She was a kindergarten teacher."

"She was," Jack agreed, leaning forward. "Until she witnessed something she shouldn't have."

The seven executives around the table looked terrified, their eyes glued to the floor. Jack didn't care about them. He only cared about me.

"My father didn't die of a heart attack, Emily. He was murdered." Jack slid the photo closer to me. "And your mother was the only person who saw who did it."

I couldn't breathe. My mother had died in a hit-and-run when I was a teenager. A cold case.

"She went into hiding to protect you," Jack continued. "But they found her."

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a heavy silver bracelet. It was dented, the clasp broken.

"I found this at the scene of your mother's accident," Jack said.

I gasped. "That was hers. She never took it off."

"Look at the engraving on the inside," Jack commanded gently.

I picked it up with trembling fingers. I expected to see my name, or my father's.

Instead, engraved in the silver were three letters: N.C.G.

Northbridge Consumer Group.
