Chapter 5 - THE VINTAGE TICKET IN THE DUST

"Run!" Jack grabbed my waist and hurled us toward the fire escape window.
We shattered the glass, tumbling out onto the rusted iron grate just as a deafening explosion rocked the alley below. The heat singed my hair, the shockwave throwing us against the brick wall.
Jack's SUV was a ball of roaring flames.
"He's trying to erase us," Jack coughed, pulling me up.
We scrambled up to the roof, running across the tar paper as sirens wailed in the distance. We climbed down the adjacent building and stole a delivery van from a loading dock.
"The coordinates on the drawing," Jack said, his knuckles white on the steering wheel. "They lead to Pier 44. The old shipping yard my father used to own."
We drove in silence, the gravity of the situation crushing me. The man I had shared a sandwich with was now my only shield against a mafia war.
We arrived at the abandoned pier as the sun began to set.
Inside the rusted warehouse, Jack led me to a specific iron pillar marked on the map. He used a crowbar to pry open a loose floor panel.
Inside was a small, waterproof lockbox.
Jack smashed the lock.
I held my breath. Inside wasn't a ledger or money.
It was a vintage train ticket, dated twenty years ago.
And a heavy, gold pocket watch.
Jack picked up the watch. He popped the casing open.
Inside was a photograph of Silas, shaking hands with the head of a rival cartel.
"Treason," Jack whispered. "Silas sold my father out. Your mother found the proof."
I looked at the train ticket. "Jack, look at the destination on the ticket."
He flipped it over. Chicago.
"My mother wasn't hiding from Silas," I realized, the truth hitting me like a freight train. "She was trying to get to someone in Chicago. Someone who could protect us."
A slow clap echoed through the empty warehouse.
We spun around.
Uncle Silas stood in the doorway, flanked by a dozen armed men.
"You always were too smart for your own good, Jack," Silas sneered.
He raised his gun, pointing it directly at me.

"Give me the watch, or the girl dies."
