Chapter 10 - [THE SILVER NECKLACE IN THE VAULT]

My fingers trembled as I picked up the heavy silver locket. It was cold, the intricate floral engravings worn smooth by time.

Thirty years ago, our small apartment had been ransacked. My mother had wept for days over this stolen necklace, claiming it was the only thing of value she had left from her own mother.

I found the small clasp on the side of the locket and pressed it.

The silver shell popped open.

Inside were two small, faded photographs behind glass.

On the left was a picture of my mother, smiling beautifully in her twenties.

On the right was a young, sharp-featured man with dark hair and a distinct, jagged scar across his jawline.

I stopped breathing.

It was Silvio Bellini.

“No,” I whispered, dropping the locket onto the desk as if it had burned me. “No, that’s… that’s impossible.”

Luca leaned forward, his hands resting on the edge of my desk. “The police always assumed the Bellini family rose to power through brute force. But the truth is, Silvio married into the original crime family. His wife was the heir to the territory.”

I stared at the picture of my mother. “My mother was a waitress. She worked double shifts at a diner until she died of cancer.”

“Your mother was Rosa Bellini,” Luca corrected gently. “Silvio’s wife. She ran away from him thirty-two years ago to protect you from the life. She changed her name, hid in the slums, and pretended to be a nobody so Silvio could never find you.”

The room began to spin.

My mother. The woman who baked pies and sewed my dresses. She was the matriarch of the most violent crime syndicate in the city. Which meant Silvio Bellini—the monster who killed my husband and tormented my son—was my biological father.

“David found out,” I realized, my voice completely hollow.

Luca nodded. “Ten years ago, David didn't just stumble onto a drug ring at the docks. He discovered the truth about your bloodline. He realized that if Silvio ever found out you were alive, Silvio would kill David and drag you and Tyler back into the mafia to secure his own claim to the throne.”

Tears blurred my vision. David hadn't just died trying to stop drugs. He had sacrificed himself to keep Silvio’s eyes away from me. He took the secret to his watery grave to keep us safe.

“There’s something else,” Luca said softly.

He reached into the wooden box and pulled out a small, heavy brass key. It had a unique crest carved into the bow—a crest I now recognized as the Bellini family seal.

“Silvio didn't keep the locket just out of sentimentality,” Luca explained. “Behind the photo of your mother is a vault number. This key opens the Bellini Family Trust at the First National Bank downtown.”

I stared at the brass key. “What’s in the trust?”

“Everything,” Luca said. “The deeds to half the real estate in the city. The legitimate businesses. The offshore accounts. By blood right, Patricia, Silvio doesn't own any of it.”

May you like

Luca pushed the key across the desk toward me.

“You do.”
