Chapter 3 - THE TERMINATION EMAIL

The dining room erupted into frantic whispers.
Vanessa’s mocking smile vanished instantly. “Excuse me?”
Luca held up a hand. The whispers stopped. He stepped around the banquet table, his dark eyes fixed entirely on me. The tattoos on his neck shifted as he clenched his jaw.
“Explain that, Linda,” Luca said. His voice wasn't a request. It was a command.
I wiped a stray tear from my cheek. “Two years ago, your mother was very ill. She called me into her bedroom. She said she had seen Vanessa going through her private desk when she thought she was asleep.”
Vanessa stepped forward, her hands balled into fists. “She was heavily medicated! She was hallucinating!”
“She knew exactly what she was doing,” I countered, my voice steadying. “She handed me the watch. She said it was the only thing your father left you, and she was terrified Vanessa would sell it to cover her own family's financial troubles. She made me swear to keep it safe until you were ready to see the truth.”
Luca turned slowly toward his fiancée. “My mother thought you were stealing from us?”
“Luca, listen to yourself!” Vanessa shouted, her composure shattering. “You’re taking the word of a housemaid over the woman you’re about to marry? She’s lying to save her job!”
“She doesn't need to lie for her job,” David, my son-in-law, suddenly spoke up.
He stepped to my side, placing a protective hand on my shoulder. David was a quiet, hardworking accountant. He rarely raised his voice. But right now, he looked furious.
“My mother-in-law works hard,” David said. “And she doesn't need to steal. I make a good living at the Bellini firm. We take care of her.”
Vanessa’s eyes shifted to David. A cold, dangerous smirk spread across her lips.
“Are you sure about that, David?” she asked softly.
Emily stepped closer to her husband. “What do you mean?”
Vanessa reached for her phone on the table. “You work for my father’s accounting firm, David. And unfortunately, the Bellini family does not employ relatives of thieves. It’s a liability.”
David frowned. “You don't have the authority to—”
His cell phone buzzed in his pocket.
The sound was loud in the quiet room. David pulled it out. The screen illuminated his face. I watched his expression change from confusion to absolute shock.
Emily grabbed his arm. “David? What is it?”
David stared at the screen, his face turning pale. He looked up at Vanessa, his voice trembling.
“You fired me.”
Vanessa casually took a sip of her champagne. “Effective immediately.”
“David, no,” Emily gasped, tears welling in her eyes. They had just finalized the adoption today. They had a new child to support. A mortgage.
“It’s not just a termination,” David whispered, showing the email to Luca. “They’re claiming I embezzled fifty thousand dollars from the corporate accounts. They’re pressing criminal charges.”
I felt the room spin. Vanessa hadn't just attacked my job. She had orchestrated a complete destruction of my family to protect her secret.
“You planted this,” Luca said, reading the email over David’s shoulder.
“I did no such thing,” Vanessa said smoothly. “David has been stealing to pay off Linda’s debts. It’s a tragic family conspiracy. The police will be at their house in an hour.”
Ben began to cry, burying his face in Emily’s dress.
I felt a surge of pure panic. I had tried to protect Luca’s mother, and now I had destroyed my own family.

But as Luca handed the phone back to David, he didn't look defeated. He looked at Marco.
“Marco,” Luca said quietly. “Bring me the old ledger from the basement safe. The red one.”
