Chapter 11 - THE LETTERS ADDRESSED TO THE HOUSEMAID

“This is impossible,” I whispered, taking the stack of letters from Luca’s hands.

My fingers trembled as I touched the thick, aged parchment. “Your mother died ten years ago. I didn't start working here until two years ago. I didn't even know David when she died. How could she possibly know my name?”

Luca was staring at the letters, his mind working furiously. “Open the first one.”

I slid the blue ribbon off and broke the seal on the top envelope. I unfolded the letter. The handwriting was elegant, swooping, and feminine.

My dearest Claire,

If you are reading this, it means Marco’s plan worked. It means he kept you safe. And it means my son, Luca, finally has the family he deserves.

I stopped reading, the air rushing from my lungs. “Marco’s plan?”

I looked up at Luca. “What does Marco have to do with me?”

Luca shook his head, utterly bewildered. “Keep reading.”

I swallowed hard and continued reading aloud.

You don't know me, Claire. I passed away long before Marco brought you into this house. But I knew your mother. Elena was my closest friend. When she fell ill, she asked Marco to watch over you. He promised her he would.

“My mother?” I gasped. My mother had died when I was nineteen. She had been a waitress, struggling to make ends meet. She never mentioned knowing anyone wealthy.

Marco couldn't bring you into our world immediately. The syndicate was too dangerous. Carlo Bellini was too powerful. So Marco watched you from afar. When you married David, Marco gave him a job to keep you fed. And when David got tangled in Carlo’s web and had to run, Marco made sure you and Lily were protected.

Tears welled in my eyes. All those years, when I thought I was entirely alone, struggling to pay rent, freezing in the winter… Marco had been watching over us.

He brought you into this house as a maid, not to insult you, but to hide you in plain sight. It was the only place Carlo Bellini couldn't hurt you. Under Luca’s roof. Under my son’s protection.

I pressed my hand to my mouth, a sob tearing from my throat.

But I also left this letter for my son. Luca, if you are reading this, it means you survived the war with the Bellinis. I always knew you had a good heart, my boy. A heart that didn't belong in the mafia. I leave you with this final request.

I handed the letter to Luca. His hands were shaking as he read the final paragraph.

In the false bottom of this wooden box is the deed to the Moretti Shipping Company, fully transferred into a legal, legitimate foundation. I arranged it before I died. File the paperwork. Step away from the Commission. End the bloodline of violence. Take Claire and Lily, and build a quiet, beautiful life. You have paid your debts. Now, go be happy.

Luca lowered the letter. A single tear tracked down his cheek, tracing the edge of his jawline.

For ten years, he had carried the weight of the mafia empire, believing it was his duty, his curse. But his mother had left him an exit door. And Marco had spent ten years guiding him toward it.

The sound of footsteps echoed in the hallway.

Marco appeared in the doorway of the bedroom. He looked older than he had downstairs, leaning heavily against the doorframe, breathing hard.

“You found them,” Marco smiled, his eyes shining with unshed tears.

“Marco,” I sobbed, running across the room and throwing my arms around the older man.

He hugged me back tightly, resting his chin on my head. “Your mother made me promise, Claire. She made me promise you would never be alone.”

“You’re the one who hired me,” I cried. “You’re the one who put David’s coat in the apartment so Luca would find the ledger.”

Marco nodded slowly. “David mailed the key to me years ago. I taped it to Lily’s lunchbox yesterday. I knew once the engagement dinner blew up, Luca would finally see the truth about Vanessa. It was time to end it.”

But as Marco stepped back to look at me, his legs suddenly gave out.

He collapsed onto the floor, clutching his chest, a faded photograph slipping from his pocket.
