Chapter 10 - The Master Ledger

The words hung in the cold, rain-slicked air like a death sentence.
“He stole the master ledger.”
Luca went completely still, his eyes locked on the burning trash barrel where Vanessa’s folder had just turned to ash. The victory we had claimed only seconds ago felt violently hollow.
“He took the Black Book,” Matteo breathed, his soot-stained face draining of color.
“What is the Black Book?” I asked, panic clawing at my throat as I tightened my grip on Lily.
“It’s the holy grail of the Chicago Syndicate,” Luca explained, his voice hollow, dropping the radio to his side. “My father didn’t trust computers. He kept a physical ledger of every illegal transaction, every bribe paid to a politician, every captain’s true identity, and every offshore account routing our money.”
Matteo turned to his brother, his eyes wide with horror.
“If Arthur hands that book to the FBI,” Matteo said, “the entire Syndicate goes down. Hundreds of men. The resulting power vacuum will plunge Chicago into a bloodbath that will last a decade.”
“He’s not going to the FBI,” Luca said quietly, his mind racing, piecing the puzzle together with terrifying speed.
“Why wouldn’t he?” I asked. “Vanessa was going to the police.”
“Because Vanessa was acting out of spite,” Luca stated, staring out into the dark street. “Arthur is acting out of desperation. He’s bankrupt. He owes millions. The FBI can offer him witness protection, but they can’t give him back his wealth and power.”
Luca turned to Marco, who had just stepped out of the trailing SUV.
“Arthur is going to sell the book to the highest bidder,” Luca deduced, his voice hardening into a lethal command. “He’s going to use the names of my captains as leverage to buy a seat at a rival family’s table.”
“The New York families,” Marco realized, nodding grimly. “The Colombos have been trying to expand into Chicago for years. If they have the Black Book, they can blackmail our entire command structure into submission without firing a single shot.”
“Where would Arthur go to make the sale?” Matteo demanded.
Luca closed his eyes, calculating the moves of a desperate, cornered man.
“He needs an untraceable exit out of the city,” Luca reasoned. “He knows I monitor the airports and the train stations. The only way out with a high-value physical asset is a private transport.”
Luca snapped his eyes open.
“The airfield at Merrill C. Meigs Field was shut down years ago, but the airstrip is still intact,” Luca said. “It’s abandoned, unmonitored, and right on the lake. Perfect for a quick extraction by a New York charter plane.”
“Marco,” Luca ordered. “Get the men back in the cars. We are going to the airfield.”
“Wait,” I interrupted, grabbing Matteo’s arm. “You just got back. You promised me it was over. Don’t go.”
Matteo looked down at me, his hazel eyes filled with a profound, agonizing conflict. He reached out, gently cupping my cheek, his thumb wiping a smudge of dirt from my face.
“Claire, if Arthur sells that book, we will never be safe,” Matteo whispered, pressing his forehead against mine. “The New York families will know about me. They’ll know about you and Lily. We will spend the rest of our lives running from ghosts. I have to finish this.”
I closed my eyes, tears spilling hot down my face. I knew he was right, but the thought of letting him walk back into danger paralyzed me.
“Promise me,” I sobbed, clutching his tactical jacket. “Promise me you’ll come back to us.”
“I swear on my life,” Matteo vowed, kissing me deeply, desperately, in the rain.
He pulled back, kneeling in the wet street to look Lily in the eyes.
“I need you to be brave for Mommy for just one more hour, okay, little bird?” Matteo asked, kissing her forehead.
Lily nodded bravely, clutching her stuffed rabbit. “Okay, Daddy.”
Matteo stood up and turned to Marco.
“Take Claire and Lily to the safe house in Oak Park,” Matteo instructed his brother’s security chief. “Do not stop for anything. If we don’t call you by sunrise, you get them on a plane to Italy.”
Marco nodded solemnly. “I will protect them with my life, Matteo.”
Matteo and Luca climbed into the lead SUV. The engines roared to life, and the heavily armored vehicle tore off down Michigan Avenue, disappearing into the rain and the neon lights of the city.
I stood on the sidewalk for a fleeting moment, watching the taillights fade, a heavy, suffocating dread settling over me.
“Come on, Claire,” Marco said gently, guiding me toward the second vehicle. “We need to get you off the street.”
I climbed into the back of the SUV, pulling Lily onto my lap. Marco got into the driver’s seat, locked the doors, and pulled out into traffic, heading west toward the suburbs.
The ride was agonizingly silent.
The rain lashed against the windows, distorting the streetlights into blurry, nervous streaks. I held Lily tightly, resting my chin on top of her head, praying silently for the men I loved.
Twenty minutes passed.
We were cruising down a quiet stretch of the Eisenhower Expressway when Marco’s radio suddenly erupted in a burst of violent static.
I jumped, my heart leaping into my throat.
“Marco! Do you copy?!” Luca’s voice screamed through the speaker, distorted by gunfire and the screeching of tires in the background.
“I copy, Boss!” Marco yelled, grabbing the radio. “What’s happening?!”
“It’s a bloodbath!” Luca roared. “Arthur didn’t call the New York families! He called the Colombians! They brought a heavily armed cartel extraction team!”
The sound of automatic weapon fire drowned out his next words.
“We’re pinned down on the tarmac! Matteo is hit!”
The world stopped spinning.
“Matteo is hit?” I screamed, lunging forward over the center console, grabbing the radio from Marco’s hand. “Luca! How bad is it?!”
“Claire, get off the radio!” Luca commanded, his voice frantic. “Marco, turn the car around! They aren’t just trying to extract Arthur! The Colombians knew about the safe house! They intercepted our comms!”
Marco slammed on the brakes, the heavy SUV skidding violently on the wet highway.
“What do you mean they know about the safe house?” Marco barked, spinning the steering wheel to execute a desperate U-turn.
Before Luca could answer, a blinding pair of high-beam headlights suddenly flooded the rearview mirror.
A massive, matte-black armored truck had appeared out of nowhere, accelerating rapidly behind us.

“Marco, they dispatched a cleanup crew to eliminate Claire and the girl!” Luca yelled over the radio. “They’re coming for you right now!”
Before Marco could hit the gas, the armored truck slammed violently into the back of our SUV.
