Chapter 12 - The Sunrise At The Estate

Luca stepped up beside me, leaning his forearms against the stone balustrade.

He had changed out of his suit, wearing a simple black sweater that highlighted the dark tattoos creeping up his neck. He looked less like a fearsome mafia boss and more like a man who had finally found peace.

“The lawyers filed the injunctions an hour ago,” Luca said quietly, staring out at the gardens. “The Rossi accounts in Geneva, Sicily, and New York have been frozen by international authorities. Their capos are scrambling. It’s over.”

I let out a long breath, watching my breath plume in the cold air. “It feels surreal. Just yesterday, I was terrified Grant was going to take everything from me.”

“He took nothing,” Luca said, turning his head to look at me. “He tried to break you, Rachel. But you’re made of stronger steel than he could ever comprehend.”

I looked down at the silver watch in my hands. “My mother hid her strength to protect me. I spent years thinking I was weak because I let Grant manipulate me. But last night… when I was running through those woods… when I stood on that pier… I realized something.”

“What?” Luca asked softly.

“I’m not a victim anymore,” I said, meeting his intense gaze. “I’m a survivor. And I’m going to make sure Lily grows up knowing she doesn't have to be afraid of anyone.”

Luca reached out, his warm, rough fingers gently brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. The touch sent a jolt of electricity straight to my heart.

“She has a good role model,” he murmured.

We stood in comfortable silence for a moment, the unspoken tension between us shifting into something deeper, something permanent.

“So,” Luca said, a faint, teasing smile touching his lips. “You own a castle in Sicily now. Are you going to move to Italy and leave us behind?”

I laughed, the sound feeling light and foreign in my chest.

“No,” I said, looking back out at the vast Moretti estate, feeling the weight of the warm coat on my shoulders. “I think I’ve found exactly where I belong.”

Luca’s smile softened into something incredibly tender. He stepped closer, eliminating the space between us.

“Good,” he whispered.

He didn't rush. He didn't demand. He simply leaned down, giving me every opportunity to pull away.

I didn't.

When his lips met mine, it wasn't the frantic, possessive kiss of a toxic romance. It was slow, deeply respectful, and burning with a quiet, undeniable fire. It was the promise of a true partnership.

I wrapped my arms around his neck, sinking into the warmth of him, letting go of the last remnants of my past.

The next morning, the sun rose bright and golden over the estate.

I stood in the kitchen, making pancakes with Lily, who was covered in flour and laughing hysterically as Teresa tried to teach her Italian.

Luca walked into the kitchen, dressed in his crisp black suit, looking every inch the powerful leader of the city. But when he saw us, the hard edges vanished.

He walked over to the kitchen counter.

He reached into his pocket and pulled out the small, blue rubber-coated key that Grant had stolen.

Without a word, Luca tossed it into the blazing hearth of the kitchen fireplace. We watched the plastic melt and the brass blacken.

Then, Luca reached into his other pocket.

He placed a heavy, solid gold key on the marble counter in front of me. It matched the ones he and Teresa carried.

“You don't need the blue one anymore,” Luca said, his eyes crinkling with a warm smile. “You have the front door.”

I looked at the gold key, then at the man I had come to trust with my life, and the little girl who finally had a safe place to grow up.

I picked up the key, slipping it into my pocket.

“Thank you,” I smiled.

And for the first time in my life, I knew I was finally home.
