Chapter 10 - The Inherited Sins

The next morning, the sun broke through the heavy autumn clouds, casting a golden light over the city.

I stood in the immaculate marble lobby of the Central Global Bank, holding Lily’s hand. She was wearing a new yellow dress Teresa had bought for her, completely oblivious to the gravity of the moment.

Luca stood beside me, wearing a fresh black suit, the bruises on his face the only sign of the previous night’s war.

The bank manager, trembling slightly under Luca’s intense gaze, led us down a secure elevator into the subterranean vaults.

“Box 704, Mr. Moretti,” the manager said, unlocking the outer cage and bowing away.

Luca walked up to the heavy steel wall of boxes. He punched the numbers from the back of the photograph into the digital keypad. 49-02-11-76.

A green light flashed. The lock clicked open.

Luca pulled the long metal box from the wall and set it on a viewing table.

We opened the lid.

Inside lay stacks of bearer bonds, worth millions. There were flawless diamonds wrapped in velvet.

But resting on top of the fortune was a single, sealed envelope addressed to Rachel.

I picked it up, my hands trembling. I broke the wax seal and unfolded the thick parchment paper.

It was my mother’s handwriting.

“My beautiful Rachel. If you are reading this, I am gone, and the truth has finally come to light. The money in this box belongs to the Moretti family. It was Antonio’s contingency fund. I stole it the night he died to ensure the Rossis couldn't bankrupt his wife and young son while they grieved.”

I looked at Luca. He was reading over my shoulder, his expression softening with immense gratitude.

I kept reading.

“But there is something else in this box. Something that belongs to you, Rachel.”

I reached back into the metal box. Beneath the diamonds, there was a heavy, ornate gold key. It was ancient, with a crest carved into the handle.

I held it up. “What is this?”

Luca stared at the key, his breath catching. “That is the master key to the original Rossi estate in Sicily. It’s been lost for a century.”

I looked back at the letter.

“I never told you about your father, Rachel. I told you he was a passing romance. I lied. Your father was Don Rossi’s eldest brother, the rightful heir to the Rossi empire. He was murdered by his own family because he wanted to legitimize the business and walk away from the violence.”

The room spun. I clutched the table to steady myself.

“I fled with you while you were still in my womb. I took a job as a maid for the Morettis to hide in plain sight. You are not just a therapist, Rachel. You are the last true heir of the Rossi bloodline. The gold key entitles you to their ancestral lands and fortune. You hold the power to end their empire, not with bullets, but with the law.”

I dropped the letter.

I wasn't just a poor girl from the city. I was mafia royalty.

Luca looked at me, a slow, incredibly proud smile spreading across his face.

“You just inherited the enemy’s castle,” Luca murmured.
