Chapter 9 - THE TRUTH IN THE LIGHT

Chaos erupted on the dock.

Claire writhed on the wooden planks, her screams piercing the cold night air. The stress, the terror, the confrontation—it had triggered premature labor.

Vincent hesitated, his eyes darting between his screaming new wife, the ledger in my hands, and my son held by his guards. For a split second, the ruthless mafia boss didn't know what to do.

That second was all Dominic needed.

Dominic swung his gun toward the guards holding Anthony and fired twice.

The guards dropped.

"Anthony, run!" I screamed.

Anthony broke free, sprinting toward me.

Vincent roared in fury and aimed his weapon at Dominic. Gunfire exploded across the water. Dominic took a hit to the shoulder and fell backward against the boathouse wall, but he managed to return fire, shattering the spotlight on Vincent's boat.

Plunged into semi-darkness, I grabbed Anthony's hand and threw us both behind a stack of metal oil drums.

Claire continued to scream, clutching at the hem of Vincent's coat as he leaped from the boat onto the dock.

"Get her on the boat!" Vincent ordered his remaining men, ignoring his wife's agony as he scanned the darkness for me. "Evelyn! You can't hide!"

Sirens.

Faint at first, but growing louder by the second. The wail of police cruisers and heavy armored vehicles cutting through the silence of the estate.

Vincent froze. He looked toward the driveway. Red and blue lights were flashing through the trees.

"Sir, the feds!" one of the guards yelled, abandoning Claire and running for the woods.

Vincent spun toward the oil drums. "Give me the book, Evelyn! Now!"

I stood up, stepping out from behind the cover. I held the fake manual up high.

With all the strength I had left, I hurled the heavy book straight into the black water of the lake.

"NO!" Vincent screamed.

He didn't think. He dove off the dock into the freezing water, desperately swimming after the sinking book, desperate to save his empire.

As he plunged into the lake, a dozen FBI agents swarmed the dock, assault rifles raised.

"Hands in the air! Nobody move!"

I pulled Anthony close to my chest, burying my face in his hair, sobbing uncontrollably. "We're safe," I whispered over and over. "We're safe."

They fished Vincent out of the lake, freezing and handcuffed. When they dragged him onto the dock, he was screaming about the ledger, demanding his lawyers.

I walked over to him, holding the real ledger—safely wrapped in Anthony's jacket—in my hands.

Vincent looked at the real book, then at the water, and the realization hit him. His face crumbled in complete defeat.

I handed the ledger to the lead FBI agent.

Paramedics rushed onto the dock, loading a pale, sobbing Claire onto a stretcher. She looked at me as they rolled her past. There was no arrogance left. Only fear.

"Evelyn," Claire cried. "Please. The baby."

I looked at my sister, the woman who had traded our mother's life for this nightmare.

"Your baby will be safe, Claire," I said calmly. "The state will make sure of it when you go to prison."

I turned my back on her and walked away.

Dominic was sitting against the boathouse, clutching his bleeding shoulder as medics attended to him. He looked up at me and gave a slow, respectful nod. He was going to prison too, but he had bought his peace.

I wrapped my arm around Anthony's shoulders. The nightmare was over. We had our dignity, our lives, and the truth. As we walked toward the waiting ambulances, the sun began to peek over the horizon, casting a warm, golden light across the water.

We were finally free.
