Chapter 5 - THE FAMILY HEIRLOOM

The warehouse was dead quiet as the three women—my mother, an undercover FBI agent, and a seasoned operative—laid out a blueprint of the Chicago shipyards on the rusted metal desk.

I stood beside them, a thirty-eight-year-old mother wearing a ruined evening gown, staring at the map.

"Dominic is holding Vincent at Pier 4," Celeste explained, pointing a red pen at a large warehouse icon. "He has twenty men from the New York syndicate guarding the perimeter."

"And we have what?" I asked. "Four people?"

"Five," Anthony said, standing up from his chair.

"No," I turned to him, my voice leaving no room for argument. "You are staying here. I will not lose you."

"Mom, he’s my dad."

"And I am your mother. You sit down."

Anthony glared at me but slowly sat back down.

My mother reached into a locked metal briefcase on the floor.

"We don't need an army, Evelyn. We just need leverage."

She pulled out a heavy, leather-bound book. The edges were worn, the pages yellowed.

I recognized it immediately.

It was the Moretti family ledger. The true ledger. The family heirloom that Vincent’s grandfather had started ninety years ago, documenting every politician, every judge, every hidden offshore account the family owned.

"Vincent gave this to me the night of the fire," my mother said softly. "He knew Dominic was trying to kill me. Vincent staged the fire so I could disappear, and he gave me the ledger to keep it out of Dominic's hands."

I stared at her.

"Vincent saved you?"

She nodded. "Your husband is a criminal, Evelyn. But he loves his family. He has spent three years playing the villain to keep you and Anthony off Dominic's radar."

The guilt hit me like a freight train.

I had slapped him. I had accused him in front of everyone.

And he had taken it, in silence, to keep the illusion alive.

"Dominic needs this ledger to take over the syndicate," Celeste added. "Without it, the New York families won't fully back him. He thinks Vincent has it hidden."

"So we give it to him," I said.

Rosa looked up sharply. "Excuse me?"

"We don't go in with guns," I said, my mind finally focusing. Seventeen years married to a boss had taught me something about power. "We go in with a trade."

I looked at Celeste.

"If I get Dominic to confess on a wire, and I hand him the ledger, can you move your FBI strike team in?"

Celeste nodded. "Yes. We have tactical units on standby. But Evelyn, if Dominic suspects you're wired, he won't hesitate to kill you."

"He thinks I'm a terrified, broken housewife who just found out about her husband's mistress," I said coldly. "He expects me to be desperate."

I took the heavy leather ledger from my mother's hands.

"Call Dominic," I told Celeste. "Tell him I have the book. Tell him I want my husband."

Twenty minutes later, I was standing alone in the freezing fog of Pier 4.

The red coat driver had dropped me off at the security gate.

Two massive men in dark coats patted me down. They found the ledger. They didn't find the micro-transmitter Celeste had glued beneath the silver bracelet on my wrist.

They marched me into the massive, echoing shipyard warehouse.

Smell of salt and iron.

In the center of the room, tied to a metal chair, was Vincent.

His face was badly bruised. His lip was split, bleeding onto his ruined white shirt.

But when he saw me, his eyes widened in pure terror.

"Evelyn, no!" Vincent shouted, pulling violently against his restraints. "Get her out of here!"

Dominic stepped out from the shadows, smiling.

Claire was right behind him, wearing my designer coat.

"Well, well," Dominic laughed. "The devoted wife returns."

I gripped the ledger tightly against my chest.

"Let him go, Dominic," I said. "Or this book goes into the river."
