Chapter 11 - THE PROMISE MADE AT THE GRAVE

The cemetery was quiet, blanketed in the soft, green grass of early spring.

I stood at the foot of Mark’s headstone, clutching a bouquet of white lilies. The air was crisp, the wind gently rustling the leaves of the ancient oak tree that shaded his grave.

I hadn't been here in almost a year. The grief had been too heavy, the memories too painful. But today, standing here with his tungsten wedding band safely tucked into my coat pocket, I felt entirely different.

I wasn't a broken, terrified widow anymore.

“Hi, Mark,” I whispered, kneeling to place the lilies against the gray granite.

I traced the letters of his name with my fingertips.

“I’m sorry it took me so long to come back. Things got really scary for a while.” I paused, taking a deep, shuddering breath. “But you saved us. The footage you hid... it caught the men who hurt you. They can’t hurt anyone else ever again.”

A tear slipped down my cheek, landing softly on the grass.

“Sophie is doing so well,” I smiled through my tears. “She’s so big now, Mark. You would be so proud of her. She still sleeps with your Cubs hat every single night. She knows how much you loved her.”

I stood up, wiping my eyes, feeling a profound sense of closure wash over my soul. The crushing weight of the injustice of his death was finally gone. He was a hero.

I turned around.

Luca was standing about thirty yards away, near the wrought-iron gates of the cemetery. He was wearing a long black wool coat against the chill, his hands buried deep in his pockets.

He hadn't crowded me. He had driven me here, walked me to the gates, and then stepped back, giving me the space I needed to speak to my husband alone. He was secure enough in our relationship to respect the love I still held for Mark.

I caught his eye and offered a small, grateful smile.

I raised my hand, gesturing for him to come closer.

Luca hesitated for a fraction of a second, then walked slowly across the manicured grass. He stopped beside me, looking down at the headstone with absolute respect.

“He chose a beautiful spot,” Luca murmured.

“I chose it,” I corrected softly. “He always loved sitting under oak trees.”

Luca nodded. He took a deep breath, stepping slightly in front of me, addressing the headstone directly.

“Mark,” Luca said, his deep voice carrying a solemn, unbreakable vow. “We only met once, but I know the kind of man you were. You died protecting your family. You died protecting your integrity.”

Luca reached into his coat pocket.

“I know I can never replace you,” Luca continued, his voice thick with emotion. “And I will never try to. Sophie will always know who her father is. I will make sure she remembers how much you loved her, every single day for the rest of her life.”

I covered my mouth with my hand, tears spilling freely down my cheeks.

“But I am asking for your permission,” Luca whispered to the granite stone. “To protect them now. To love them, and provide for them, and keep them safe from the monsters in this world. I swear to you on my life, Mark. I will never let them down.”

The wind blew gently through the branches above us, a soft, comforting sound in the quiet cemetery.

Luca stood there for a long moment in silence, honoring the man who had laid the foundation for the family we were building.

Then, Luca turned to me.

He didn't drop to one knee. He didn't pull out a velvet box with a massive, ostentatious diamond. He knew I didn't want the flashy, mafia-style proposal Vanessa had demanded.

Instead, Luca reached into his coat pocket and pulled out a simple, elegant silver band, inlaid with a single, small sapphire.

“Emily,” Luca said softly, stepping closer and taking my trembling left hand in his.

I looked up into his dark, beautiful eyes.

“I’m not asking you to forget your past,” Luca whispered, his thumb brushing over my knuckles. “I’m not asking you to erase the love you had for him. I’m just asking if you have enough room in your heart left for me.”

I let out a wet, joyful laugh.

“I have all the room in the world for you, Luca,” I wept.

Luca smiled, a breathtaking expression of pure relief and happiness. He gently slid the silver band onto my ring finger. It fit perfectly.

He pulled me into his arms, kissing me deeply beneath the oak tree. The ghosts of the past weren't haunting us anymore; they were blessing us.

“Mom! Mr. Luca!”

We broke apart, looking toward the cemetery gates.

Vince was standing near the SUV, holding Sophie’s hand. She was bouncing up and down in her pink winter coat, waving frantically at us.

“Can we go get pancakes now?” Sophie yelled across the grass.

Luca laughed, wrapping his arm securely around my waist.

“Yes, sweetheart! We’re coming!” Luca yelled back.

He looked down at me, his eyes shining with the promise of a beautiful, peaceful future.

“Let’s go home, Mrs. Moretti,” Luca whispered.

May you like

I smiled, resting my head against his shoulder as we walked across the grass toward our daughter.

“Let’s go home.”
