Chapter 12 - THE SUNSHINE IN THE LOCKET

Lily stared at the open locket.

She looked at the picture of her mother on the left, and the picture of me on the right.

Slowly, she looked up at Luca. "Daddy?"

"I know it's a small space," Luca said gently, his eyes filled with love. "And nobody will ever replace your mother. But I thought... maybe there's room in your heart for two women who love you more than anything in the world."

Lily looked back down at the locket. She traced her finger over Elena's face, and then over mine.

Without saying a word, she stood up in the booth, climbed over the table, and threw her arms around my neck.

"I love you, Hannah," she whispered into my hair.

I hugged her back so tightly I thought I might break, tears of pure joy spilling down my cheeks. "I love you too, my sweet girl. So much."

Luca watched us, his eyes shining. He reached across the table and covered my hand with his.

One year later.

The Chicago mansion was alive with music and laughter. The dark, heavy atmosphere that used to suffocate the halls was completely gone.

We had repainted most of the house. We threw open the heavy curtains to let the sunlight in.

But we didn't touch the kitchen doorway.

I stood in the foyer, wearing a simple, elegant white silk dress. My hair was pinned up, and the delicate gold charm bracelet Luca had given me in the hospital jingled softly on my wrist.

Today was our wedding day.

It wasn't a massive affair with forty-eight business partners. It was intimate. Just our closest friends, the loyal staff who had become our family, and a priest.

I looked at my reflection in the hall mirror, taking a deep breath.

"You look beautiful," a voice said behind me.

I turned.

Lily was standing there, wearing a beautiful pale pink dress, holding a small bouquet of white roses. She was eleven now, taller, more confident. The shadows that used to haunt her eyes were entirely gone.

"Thank you, sweetheart," I smiled, kneeling down to her level. "Are you ready for your big job?"

She nodded proudly. She was our ring bearer.

"Hannah?" she asked softly.

"Yes, baby?"

Lily reached into her small purse. "I want you to wear something for me."

She pulled out the silver locket.

"Lily, I can't take your locket," I said, my heart swelling. "That's your mother's."

"I know," Lily said, stepping closer. "But Mommy wore it when she married Daddy. I want you to wear it today. So she can be there, too."

Tears pricked my eyes. I turned around, and Lily carefully clasped the delicate silver chain around my neck.

The cool metal settled against my skin, resting perfectly above my heart.

"Thank you," I whispered, kissing her forehead. "It's perfect."

The music changed to a soft acoustic guitar. It was time.

I took Lily's hand, and together, we walked into the grand living room.

The room was filled with flowers. At the end of the aisle stood the priest.

And waiting for me was Luca.

He was breathtaking in a classic black tuxedo. When he saw me walking down the aisle, his breath hitched visibly. His eyes locked onto mine, and the rest of the room faded away.

We reached the altar. Lily proudly handed the rings to the priest and stood beside me, holding my hand.

Luca took my other hand. His grip was warm, strong, and entirely safe.

"You look like an angel," he whispered.

"I feel like one," I whispered back.

The priest spoke the traditional words, but I barely heard them. I was too busy looking at the man in front of me. The man who had defended a doorway, fought an empire, and opened his broken heart to a maid who had nothing to her name.

"Luca," I said, my voice steady and clear as I slipped the gold band onto his finger. "I promise to love you, to protect our family, and to always look for the quiet things that matter. I promise to be your home."

Luca's eyes were wet as he took the smaller gold band and slid it onto my finger.

"Hannah," he said, his voice deep and rough with emotion. "You brought the sun back into my life. You loved my daughter when she was broken, and you loved me when I was lost. I promise to spend the rest of my life proving that you were right to stay."

"I now pronounce you husband and wife," the priest smiled. "You may kiss the bride."

Luca didn't hesitate. He pulled me into his arms, kissing me with a passion and a promise that took my breath away.

The small crowd cheered. Lily clapped loudly, jumping up and down.

As we broke the kiss, Luca rested his forehead against mine, smiling.

I looked over his shoulder, through the open archway that led to the kitchen.

I could see the wooden doorframe from here. The pencil marks, the clear plexiglass, the history of love that had weathered the storm.

I wasn't a maid anymore. I wasn't an outsider looking into a world I didn't belong to.

I touched the silver locket resting against my chest, feeling the dual heartbeat of the family I had found.

May you like

I was Hannah Moretti.

And I was finally home.
