Chapter 9 - THE PROMISE IN THE GOLD

I stared at the small velvet box on the hospital tray.

My heart began to hammer wildly against my ribs. "Mr. Moretti... what is that?"

Luca let out a soft, self-deprecating laugh. He ran a hand through his dark hair. "First of all, you need to stop calling me Mr. Moretti. My name is Luca."

"Luca," I tested the word. It felt strange, but right, on my tongue.

He picked up the small box and gently opened it.

Inside wasn't a diamond engagement ring.

It was a delicate gold bracelet, intricately woven with three small charms hanging from it: a tiny sun, a book, and a little golden house.

I looked at him, confused but incredibly touched.

"When Elena died," Luca said, his voice quiet and steady, "I locked my heart away in a box, much like she hid her secrets in one. I thought my only job left in this world was to protect Lily and run my empire. I thought loving someone again was a betrayal."

He took the bracelet out of the box.

"But you didn't just save my life two nights ago, Hannah. You saved my soul. You stood in front of a bucket of paint to protect my dead wife's memory. You ran into a storm to find my daughter. And you took a bullet for me."

He gently lifted my wrist, carefully avoiding the IV lines, and clasped the gold bracelet around it.

"The sun is because Lily calls you her sunshine now," Luca smiled. "The book is because you threw a hardback novel at a woman holding a gun, which is still the bravest and craziest thing I've ever seen. And the house..."

He paused, his dark eyes locking onto mine.

"The house is because you are our home, Hannah. If you want to be."

Tears blurred my vision. I looked down at the beautiful golden charms resting against my skin.

"I'm a maid, Luca," I whispered, the insecurity of my old life creeping in. "I don't belong in your world."

"You belong with us," a small voice piped up.

I turned my head. Lily was awake, rubbing her eyes. She climbed carefully onto the edge of my hospital bed and hugged my good side.

"Please don't leave us, Hannah," Lily said, her brown eyes pleading. "Daddy told me he's going to fire you so you don't have to clean anymore. He said you're going to be my new mom, if you say yes."

I looked at Luca. He was blushing slightly—a terrifying mafia boss, blushing.

"I may have skipped a few steps in the courtship process," Luca admitted, a genuine smile breaking across his handsome face. "But I have almost lost everything I care about twice in my life. I'm not waiting anymore."

He reached out and gently cupped my cheek. His thumb brushed away a tear.

"Stay with us," he whispered. "Let me take care of you, the way you took care of us."

I looked at the man who commanded empires, and the little girl who had stolen my heart from the first day I met her.

"I'll stay," I whispered, smiling through my tears. "I'm not going anywhere."

Luca leaned down and pressed his lips softly against mine. It was a gentle, reverent kiss, a promise of safety and a future I never dreamed I could have.

Three months later.

The Moretti estate was bathed in warm autumn sunlight. The leaves on the oak trees had turned brilliant shades of gold and crimson.

I was standing in the kitchen, wearing a comfortable cashmere sweater and jeans, pouring a cup of coffee. I wasn't wearing a uniform anymore.

"Hannah!"

I turned as Lily came running into the kitchen, her backpack bouncing against her shoulders. She was laughing, her cheeks flushed from the crisp air.

"How was school?" I asked, pulling her into a hug.

"It was great! I got an A on my history project," she beamed.

Luca walked into the kitchen right behind her, wearing his tailored suit, holding a briefcase. He looked happier, lighter.

He dropped his briefcase and walked over to me, wrapping his arms around my waist from behind and kissing the side of my neck.

"Good afternoon, beautiful," he murmured.

"Hi," I smiled, leaning back against his chest.

Lily ran over to the kitchen doorway. The one Vanessa had tried to paint over.

The pencil marks were still there, perfectly preserved. But right above the last mark Elena had made, there was a new piece of clear plexiglass installed over the wood, protecting the memories forever.

"Daddy, come measure me!" Lily demanded, standing tall against the doorframe.

Luca let go of me and walked over. He pulled a pencil from his pocket. He flattened his hand on top of Lily's head and made a new mark on the wood, just above the plexiglass.

"Wow," Luca smiled. "You grew another half inch."

Lily beamed. She turned around and traced the new mark.

"Do you want to write something?" Luca asked, offering me the pencil.

I hesitated. I looked at the beautiful, cursive handwriting of the mother who had loved her first.

"Are you sure?" I asked softly.

"Yes," Lily said, grabbing my hand and pulling me over.

I took the pencil. Right next to the new mark, under Elena's loving words, I wrote:

Growing taller, loved completely.

I stepped back, feeling a profound sense of peace. The past wasn't erased. It was honored, and built upon.

But as we stood there admiring the doorway, the heavy front doorbell rang.

Luca frowned. "I wasn't expecting anyone."

He walked out of the kitchen toward the foyer. I followed closely behind him.

Luca opened the heavy oak doors.

Standing on the porch was a man in an expensive gray suit, holding a leather briefcase.

"Mr. Moretti?" the man asked.

"Yes. Who are you?"

The man handed Luca a thick envelope.

"I am the attorney for the Bellini family estate," the man said. "And you have been served."
