Chapter 4 - THE COAT IN THE STUDY

Marcus stood completely still by the grand double doors of the banquet hall.
He was a massive man, an ex-military operative who had guarded the Moretti family for eight years. His face was usually a mask of stoic professionalism, but right now, as thirty-four pairs of eyes locked onto him, I saw the exact moment his world collapsed.
Luca didn’t shout. He didn’t even blink. He just stared at the man he had trusted with his life, with his father’s life, and with the security of his entire empire.
“Marcus,” Luca said, his voice dropping to a terrifying, lethal whisper. “Tell me my father is mistaken.”
Marcus swallowed hard. His hand twitched, hovering inches above the heavy Glock holstered at his hip. The other guards in the room—men who answered directly to Marcus—instinctively stepped back, deeply conflicted.
Vanessa’s panic morphed into pure, feral desperation.
“He raped me!” Vanessa screamed, pointing wildly at Marcus. “Luca, he forced himself on me! He threatened to kill you if I didn't comply! He’s a monster!”
Marcus’s jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth would shatter. The accusation of assault from the woman he had clearly risked everything for was the final breaking point.
In a blur of motion, Marcus drew his weapon.
Several guests screamed and dove under the heavy mahogany table. Plates shattered. Wine glasses tipped over, spilling dark red liquid across the pristine white tablecloth like blood.
Luca moved instantly. He shoved his father and me behind his broad back, shielding us with his own body. He didn't draw a gun. He just stood there, staring down the barrel of his own head of security’s weapon.
“Put it down, Marcus,” Luca commanded, his voice echoing with absolute authority.
Marcus didn't aim at Luca. Instead, he lunged forward, grabbed Vanessa by the arm, and yanked her violently against his chest. He pressed the barrel of the gun against her temple.
Vanessa shrieked, thrashing against his grip. “Let me go! Luca, help me!”
“Shut your mouth!” Marcus roared, his voice cracking with a raw, agonizing pain. He looked at Luca, his eyes shining with unshed tears. “I didn't force her, Boss. I swear to God on my mother’s grave, I didn't force her.”
“Then why are you holding a gun to her head?” Luca asked, slowly taking a step forward.
“Because she played me!” Marcus yelled, his grip on Vanessa tightening. “She came to me six months ago! She told me you were hitting her, Luca! She showed me bruises. She cried in my arms and told me she was terrified of you. She said if she didn't get pregnant, you were going to kill her!”
Luca stopped walking. The accusation hit him like a physical blow. He looked at Vanessa, utterly disgusted. “You faked abuse?”
Vanessa whimpered, tears streaming down her face, playing the victim even with a gun to her head. “He’s lying! He’s a psychotic stalker!”
“I loved you!” Marcus screamed at her, the betrayal tearing him apart from the inside out. “I risked my life, my honor, everything for you! You told me the baby was mine. You told me we needed the two hundred thousand from Frank to run away together before Luca found out!”
“And when my father refused to pay the extortion?” Luca asked quietly.
Marcus let out a bitter, broken laugh. “She told me she miscarried. She said the stress of Frank’s refusal killed our baby. She made me hate your father, Luca. She made me slip the whiskey into his room. She told me if we made him look like a drunk, you’d commit him to a home, and we could finally access the offshore accounts.”
Frank gasped behind me, clutching his chest. The cruelty of Vanessa’s plan was staggering. She hadn’t just tried to steal money; she had actively tried to destroy a nineteen-year sobriety just to clear her path.
“Shoot him, Marcus!” Vanessa suddenly hissed, her victim facade dropping for a split second, revealing the cold, calculating snake beneath. “Shoot Luca right now! We can still get out of here!”
Marcus looked down at the woman he had loved. The woman he had betrayed his blood oath for. He looked at the greed and venom in her eyes.
Slowly, the anger drained out of Marcus’s face, replaced by a hollow, profound emptiness.
“You never loved me, Vanessa,” Marcus whispered. “And there never was a baby, was there?”
Vanessa’s eyes widened in genuine panic. “Marcus, what are you doing?”
Marcus lowered his gun. He let go of Vanessa, shoving her away from him in absolute disgust.
He reached into the inner pocket of his tactical vest.
“She told me she went to the clinic yesterday for her final check-up after the miscarriage,” Marcus said, staring at Luca. “She gave me this to keep in my wallet. To remember our lost child.”
Marcus threw a glossy, black-and-white sonogram photo onto the ruined dinner table. It landed right next to the yellow pawn ticket.
Luca stared at it. I stepped out from behind him and looked down at the photo.
“Read the name in the top corner, Boss,” Marcus said softly.
Luca leaned in.
The name on the ultrasound wasn't Vanessa Bellini. It was Sarah Jenkins, and it had been poorly scratched out with a black ballpoint pen.
“It’s a fake,” Marcus said, his voice breaking. “She bought a fake sonogram off the internet. She was never pregnant. Not with your child. Not with mine. The whole thing was a lie to get the offshore codes.”
The grand hall went dead silent.
Vanessa stood alone, her lies completely exhausted. She had no one left to blame. No one left to manipulate.
Marcus unclipped his gun belt and let it drop heavily to the marble floor. He fell to his knees, placing his hands behind his head, surrendering to Luca’s loyal men.
Luca didn't even look at Marcus. He turned his attention solely to Vanessa.
His eyes were completely devoid of emotion. It was the look of a man who had just excised a tumor from his life.
“You are leaving this house,” Luca said, his voice vibrating with a chilling finality. “You are leaving with nothing. No money. No coats. No jewelry. If I ever see your face in this city again, I will bury you.”
Vanessa realized it was over. The tears stopped instantly. Her posture straightened. The beautiful, elegant fiancée vanished, replaced by something much darker.
She let out a cold, sharp laugh that made my blood run cold.
“You think you’ve won, Luca?” Vanessa sneered, reaching a hand behind her neck. “You think keeping your money matters to me?”
She unclasped a heavy diamond necklace from her throat. It was the Moretti matriarch’s necklace—Luca’s mother’s necklace.
“I may not get the money,” Vanessa spat, her eyes burning with pure hatred. “But I made sure your saint of a father will never have a moment of peace again.”

Vanessa threw the diamond necklace across the room. It hit Luca’s chest and clattered to the floor.
“Turn the pendant over, Luca,” Vanessa smiled wickedly. “Read the engraving. And ask your precious, sober father why your mother really swallowed those pills nineteen years ago.”
