Chapter 9 - THE MAID AND THE BOSS

My hands scrambled across the cold concrete, my fingers wrapping around the cold steel grip of the fallen submachine gun. It was impossibly heavy, but adrenaline pumped through my veins like rocket fuel.
I spun around on my knees, aiming the heavy weapon directly at the mercenary who was trying to push himself back up.
“Don’t move!” I screamed over the blaring siren, my voice tearing through my throat. I didn't know how to shoot it, but he didn't know that.
The mercenary froze, staring down the barrel of his own gun held by a shaking housemaid.
A few feet away, Luca was engaged in a brutal, hand-to-hand struggle with Vanessa. She fought like a cornered animal, clawing at his face, desperate to keep the silver handgun.
But Luca was a mafia boss for a reason. He was lethal, efficient, and fueled by a rage that had been building for nineteen years.
With one sharp, calculated twist, he disarmed Vanessa. The silver gun clattered across the floor. He shoved her hard against the concrete wall, pinning her there with his forearm pressed against her collarbone.
Vanessa gasped for air, her eyes wide with terror as she stared into the face of the man she had tried to destroy.
“It’s over, Vanessa,” Luca snarled, his face inches from hers.
Suddenly, the heavy steel door at the top of the stairs burst open.
Footsteps thundered down the concrete steps. I tightened my grip on the gun, terrified the other mercenaries had finished with Frank and were coming for us.
But as the figures emerged into the flashing red strobe lights, I let out a massive sob of relief.
It wasn't the mercenaries.
It was Matteo, Luca’s cousin, flanked by a dozen heavily armed Moretti guards.
Matteo saw the scene in the basement and immediately lowered his weapon. “We got the guys upstairs, Boss! They surrendered the second they realized the alarm triggered the exterior lockdown. Uncle Frank is safe.”
Luca didn't look away from Vanessa. His chest heaved as he processed that his father was alive. The nightmare was finally ending.
“Take her,” Luca said, his voice dripping with pure disgust.
He stepped back, letting his guards grab Vanessa. They secured her wrists behind her back with brutal efficiency.
Vanessa didn't scream this time. She didn't cry. She just stared at Luca with a cold, hollow emptiness. The decades-long vendetta of the Bellini family had finally been extinguished in the basement of the Moretti mansion.
“What do you want us to do with her, Boss?” Matteo asked, eyeing the woman who had falsely accused him of blackmail and murder earlier that evening.
“Call the Feds,” Luca said coldly. “Tell them we have the daughter of disgraced Agent Thomas Bellini, and she just attempted armed robbery and extortion. Let her rot in the same federal prison her father died in.”
Vanessa was dragged up the stairs, disappearing into the flashing red lights.
The basement suddenly felt incredibly quiet, despite the blaring alarm.
Luca turned to me.
I was still on my knees, clutching the heavy submachine gun, my hands shaking so violently I couldn't pry my fingers off the grip. The adrenaline was crashing, leaving me cold and terrified.
Luca walked over to me. He crouched down, ignoring the groaning mercenary on the floor beside us.
Gently, tenderly, Luca placed his large, warm hands over mine.
“I’ve got it, Natalie,” he whispered. “You can let go now. I’ve got it.”
I took a shaky breath and released the weapon. Luca pushed it aside. He didn't stand up. Instead, he reached out and pulled me into his arms.
He wrapped me in a fierce, protective embrace, burying his face in my neck. I could feel his heart hammering against my chest. I wrapped my arms around his broad shoulders, clinging to him, finally letting the tears fall.
“You saved my life,” Luca whispered against my hair. “You saved my family.”
“I couldn't let her hurt him,” I sobbed. “I couldn't let her hurt you.”
Luca pulled back slightly, looking down into my face. The flashing red lights cast deep shadows across his sharp jawline, but his eyes were incredibly soft.
“You are never wearing a maid’s uniform in this house again,” Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. He reached up and gently wiped a tear from my cheek with his thumb. “You belong here. With me. As my partner. If you’ll have me.”
My breath caught in my throat. I looked into the eyes of the man who ruled the city, the man who had just dismantled a twenty-year conspiracy, and saw only a man who was asking me to share his life.
“I will,” I whispered.
Luca smiled, a genuine, beautiful expression that I had rarely seen in four years. He leaned in and pressed a soft, lingering kiss to my forehead.
We stood up together. Luca kept his arm wrapped tightly around my waist as we walked up the stairs, leaving the darkness of the basement behind.
When we reached the main floor, the mansion was swarming with police and federal agents. Matteo had made the calls.
Frank Moretti was sitting in an armchair in the foyer, surrounded by paramedics. When he saw us walk through the door, he pushed the medics away and stood up.
Luca let go of me and walked toward his father. The two men collided in a crushing embrace. Frank wept openly, burying his face in his son’s shoulder. Nineteen years of lies, guilt, and shame were finally washed away. Frank’s dignity was restored. He was a hero to his son, not a burden.
I watched them, my heart full. The main conflict was over. The family was whole.
But as two police officers dragged Vanessa out the front door in handcuffs, she violently kicked over a small wooden side table by the entrance.
The table crashed to the floor, shattering a vase.
