Chapter 12 - THE AMBUSH IN THE RAINY STREET

The cab smelled of stale coffee and old leather.

I stared at the glowing text message on my phone screen.

You should have stayed inside the gates, Hannah. The Russians never forget a debt.

My heart hammered a frantic rhythm against my ribs.

I looked out the back window of the taxi. A pair of headlights was following us too closely through the rainy Chicago streets. A black SUV.

Vanessa’s Russian handlers. The ones who had financed Arthur Vance. They hadn’t forgotten the millions Luca had cost them when he dismantled the syndicate. And now that I had left the protection of the Moretti estate, I was a walking target.

"Driver," I said, my voice trembling. "Can you take the next left? I think we're being followed."

The cab driver glanced in the rearview mirror and frowned. "Lady, I just drive where you tell me."

Before he could turn the wheel, the black SUV suddenly accelerated, swerving violently into the lane beside us. The heavy vehicle slammed into the side of the taxi with a deafening crunch of metal.

The cab spun out of control, tires screeching across the wet pavement, before slamming hard into a concrete lamppost.

The airbags deployed with a concussive pop.

Smoke hissed from the crumpled hood. My ears were ringing.

"Leo!" I gasped, frantically unbuckling my seatbelt.

"I'm okay," Leo whimpered from the seat beside me, rubbing his shoulder. He was terrified, but unhurt.

I kicked my door open and dragged Leo out into the freezing rain.

The black SUV had stopped twenty yards away. Four men in dark tactical gear stepped out, drawing weapons.

"Run, Leo! Go!" I screamed, pushing him toward the narrow alleyway between two brick buildings.

We sprinted blindly into the dark alley, the sound of heavy boots splashing in the puddles right behind us.

"Don't shoot the girl!" a thick Russian accent barked in the darkness. "The boss wants her alive for leverage against Moretti!"

I grabbed a heavy trash can and threw it backward to slow them down, pulling Leo deeper into the shadows. We reached a chain-link fence at the end of the alley. It was a dead end.

I pushed Leo behind a stack of wooden pallets, gripping a broken glass bottle from the ground as a pathetic weapon.

The four Russian mercenaries rounded the corner, their flashlights cutting through the rain, trapping us against the fence.

"It's over, little bird," the lead mercenary smirked, raising his pistol. "Come quietly, and the boy lives."

I stepped in front of Leo, raising the broken bottle, tears mixing with the rain on my face. I was going to die here. But I wouldn't let them take my brother.

"Stay away from him!" I screamed.

The mercenary laughed, stepping forward.

Suddenly, a blinding spotlight illuminated the alley from above.

The roar of a high-powered engine echoed over the rain.

A sleek, armored black car tore into the alley entrance, blocking the Russians' only exit.

The doors flew open.

Luca Moretti stepped out into the rain.

He didn't wear a suit. He wore a dark tactical vest, holding a suppressed assault rifle. Behind him, Daniel and six heavily armed loyalists poured out of the vehicle, instantly overwhelming the narrow alleyway.

The Russians froze, completely surrounded.

Luca didn't shout. He didn't issue a warning.

He raised his rifle and fired a single, deafening warning shot into the brick wall inches from the lead mercenary's head.

"Drop the weapons," Luca commanded. His voice was absolute, lethal zero.

The Russians, realizing they were outgunned and outmaneuvered, slowly lowered their guns, kicking them across the wet pavement. Daniel's men moved in instantly, zip-tying the mercenaries and forcing them to their knees.

Luca ignored the prisoners. He dropped his rifle, letting it hang by the tactical sling, and sprinted across the alley toward me.

He fell to his knees in the puddles, grabbing my shoulders, his dark eyes frantically searching my face for injuries.

"Are you hurt?" Luca demanded, his voice cracking with sheer terror. "Did they touch you?"

"I'm fine," I sobbed, dropping the broken bottle and collapsing against his chest. "We're fine."

Luca pulled me and Leo into a fierce, desperate embrace, shielding us from the cold rain. He buried his face in my neck, shaking uncontrollably.

"I thought I lost you," Luca whispered. "When Daniel saw you leave... I tracked your phone. I couldn't let them take you."

I pulled back slightly, looking into the eyes of the man I had run away from just an hour ago.

"You followed me," I realized.

"I will follow you to the ends of the earth, Hannah," Luca promised fiercely. "I know my father destroyed your family. I know my actions caused you pain. You have every right to hate me. You have every right to leave."

He reached up, gently wiping the rain and tears from my cheek.

"But I will never stop protecting you. I will spend the rest of my life making sure you and Leo are safe, even if you never want to see my face again."

I looked at Luca. I saw the profound remorse, the unyielding loyalty, and the man who had systematically dismantled a violent empire just to give me a chance at peace.

He wasn't his father. He was the man who had just risked everything to save my brother.

"I don't hate you, Luca," I whispered, the anger finally washing away in the rain. "I could never hate you."

Luca’s breath hitched. "Hannah..."

"Take us home," I said softly, resting my forehead against his. "Please. Take us home."

A beautiful, broken smile spread across Luca’s face. He pulled me in and kissed me, a desperate, passionate promise in the middle of the dark alley.

We rode back to the estate in the armored car. The tension was gone, replaced by a profound, overwhelming sense of safety.

One month later.

The sun shone brightly over the manicured gardens of the Moretti estate. The bullet holes in the walls had been repaired. The dark shadows of the syndicate were entirely gone.

I stood on the stone patio, watching Leo kick a soccer ball with Daniel across the lawn.

I was wearing a simple, elegant white sundress.

Luca walked out onto the patio, holding two cups of coffee. He handed me one, wrapping his free arm around my waist and pulling me close.

"The final transfer went through this morning," Luca murmured happily against my ear. "The Bellandi Foundation is officially fully funded. We are building the new pediatric clinic in your parents' name."

I smiled, leaning back against his chest. "They would have loved that."

"I know they would," Luca agreed softly.

He set his coffee cup down on the patio table and turned me to face him.

The dark, brooding mafia Don was completely gone. In his place stood a man who was entirely at peace, deeply in love, and looking toward the future.

Luca reached into his pocket and pulled out the small, blue velvet box I had left behind the night I ran away.

He opened it, revealing the breathtaking, vintage diamond engagement ring.

"I know our beginning was complicated, Hannah," Luca smiled softly, his dark eyes filled with absolute devotion. "But I want our future to be simple. I want to build a real family with you. In the light."

He took my hand, his thumb brushing over my knuckles.

"Will you marry me, Hannah Collins?"

I looked at the man who had fought through hell to give us a safe harbor. The man who had surrendered an empire to hold my hand.

I didn't hesitate. I didn't doubt.

"Yes," I beamed, tears of pure joy filling my eyes. "Yes, Luca."

He laughed—a rich, joyous sound that echoed across the gardens—and slid the perfect diamond ring onto my finger. He spun me around in the air before pulling me into a deep, loving kiss.

Leo cheered loudly from the lawn, running over to hug our legs.

The monsters were dead. The secrets were buried.

I had walked into this house a desperate, invisible maid, scrubbing floors to survive.

I was staying as a queen, fiercely loved, absolutely protected, and standing exactly where I belonged.

Finally, and forever, in the light.
