Chapter 9 - THE THUMB DRIVE IN THE RAIN

The rain slicked Vanessa’s blonde hair to her face, but she looked entirely unbothered. She held the small silver thumb drive between two perfectly manicured fingers like a weapon.
"What is that, Vanessa?" Luca demanded, keeping his gun leveled at her chest.
Vanessa chuckled, a cold, hollow sound that echoed across the wet lawn.
"Arthur wasn't a fool, Luca," she said smoothly. "He knew you might outsmart his muscle. So he gave me this. Do you know what’s on it?"
Nobody moved.
"It contains the unredacted ledgers of the Moretti syndicate," Vanessa announced, her smile widening into something truly vicious. "Every judge your father bought. Every politician on payroll. Every body buried under a high-rise in this city over the last thirty years."
Rosa stepped forward, her face pale. "If you release that, you destroy the entire family. You destroy the legitimate businesses, the charities—everything Luca has built."
"That’s the point, Rosa," Vanessa sneered. "If I don't get the ten million dollars from Leo's trust fund by sunrise, this goes straight to the FBI, the New York Times, and the Russian syndicate. You’ll all spend the rest of your lives in federal prison. Or worse."
Luca’s jaw tightened. "The trust is empty, Vanessa. My mother drained it."
"Then liquidate your assets!" Vanessa screamed, her composure finally cracking. "I don't care where the money comes from! I spent a year pretending to love you, sleeping in your bed, playing the perfect fiancé! I earned that money!"
I slowly stood up from the mud, my ribs aching from where Arthur Vance had kicked me.
"You didn't earn anything," I said, my voice steady and hard. "You used a child as leverage. You tried to ruin my life because you were too cowardly to face Luca directly."
Vanessa glared at me with absolute venom. "You’re nothing, Hannah. You’re a maid who got lucky. You think Luca actually loves you? He’s just paying off his father’s guilt."
The words stung, but I didn't look at Luca. I didn't need to. I already knew the truth.
Luca didn't lower his gun. He took a slow, deliberate step toward her.
"Send it," Luca challenged softly.
Vanessa blinked, confused. "What?"
"Send the files," Luca repeated, his voice devoid of fear. "Destroy the family legacy. Put me in a cage."
"Luca, don't," Rosa gasped.
Luca ignored his mother. His dark eyes remained locked on Vanessa.
"Do it," Luca taunted. "Because the second you do, you lose your leverage. And the moment that file is sent, Daniel puts a bullet between your eyes."
Vanessa’s hand trembled. She looked at Daniel, who had his rifle aimed perfectly at her head.
"You're bluffing," Vanessa whispered. "You won't let your empire fall."
"My empire?" Luca laughed, a rich, genuine sound that cut through the tension. "My empire is standing right behind me. A woman who fought a mercenary in the mud to save my mother, and a nephew sleeping safely in my house. I don't care about the money, Vanessa. Burn it down."
Vanessa stared at him. She realized, with absolute certainty, that he wasn't lying. The mafia Don didn't care about the crown anymore.
Her leverage was worthless.
With a shriek of pure, impotent rage, Vanessa threw the thumb drive into the muddy grass and turned to run into the darkness.
"Take her," Luca ordered Daniel calmly.
Two security guards sprinted after her, tackling the ruined fiancé to the ground and clicking handcuffs onto her wrists. She kicked and screamed, but it was over.
Luca holstered his weapon. He looked at his mother.
"Are you okay?" he asked softly.
"I will be," Rosa nodded, looking at her son with a newfound, profound respect. She turned to me. "Thank you, Hannah. You saved my life."
"We protect our own," I replied simply.
Luca walked over and picked up the silver thumb drive from the mud. He didn't pocket it. He dropped it onto the concrete driveway and crushed it beneath the heel of his boot, grinding it until the memory chip shattered into pieces.
He turned to me, the exhaustion finally showing on his handsome face.
"It’s over," Luca whispered.
"Is it?" I asked, tears pooling in my eyes. "The truth about my parents... Arthur Vance is dead, but your father..."
Luca reached out, gently cupping my face in his hands.
"My father was a monster, Hannah. And I will spend the rest of my life trying to make up for the sins he committed against your family. I will build a legacy you and Leo can be proud of. I swear it on my life."
He leaned down, pressing his forehead against mine.
"But I need you by my side. I love you, Hannah. Not out of guilt. Out of absolute, overwhelming truth."
I closed my eyes, letting the rain wash away the remaining doubt.
"I love you too," I whispered.
Luca kissed me, a soft, lingering promise of peace after the storm.
The next morning, the Moretti estate was bathed in warm, golden sunlight. The shattered glass was swept away, the blood washed from the driveway.
I stood in the kitchen, not wearing a maid's uniform, but a comfortable pair of jeans and an oversized sweater. I was making pancakes.
Leo ran into the room, wearing his oversized navy blazer over a t-shirt, completely unharmed and grinning ear to ear.
"Hannah! Uncle Luca said we can go to the batting cages today!" Leo cheered, hopping onto a stool at the island.
"Did he now?" I laughed, flipping a pancake onto a plate. "Did he also mention he's paying for ice cream after?"
"I definitely mentioned ice cream," Luca smiled, walking through the swinging doors. He looked relaxed, wearing a casual gray henley. The dark suits were gone.
He walked up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist and resting his chin on my shoulder.
"The police officially ruled Arthur Vance’s death as self-defense," Luca murmured in my ear. "Vanessa is in federal custody, facing thirty years for extortion. The accounts are completely clean."
"A fresh start," I smiled, leaning back against his chest.
"Exactly," Luca said.
He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, blue velvet box.
He placed it on the marble counter next to the pancakes.
I froze, staring at the box.
Leo gasped, his eyes wide. "Is that a ring?!"
Luca chuckled, opening the box. Inside sat a breathtaking, vintage diamond engagement ring.
"I know it's soon," Luca said softly, his voice filled with a quiet, fierce devotion. "But I almost lost you last night. I don't want to spend another day of my life without you officially by my side."
He turned me around so I was facing him.
"Marry me, Hannah. Let’s build a real family. In the light."
I looked at the man who had surrendered an empire to protect me, and the little brother who was finally safe.
"Yes," I cried, throwing my arms around his neck. "Yes, Luca."
He spun me around, laughing joyously, as Leo cheered loudly from his stool.
Everything was perfect. The past was buried.
But a week later, as I was unpacking some boxes in the master bedroom, moving my things into Luca's suite, I found a small, locked wooden box shoved in the back of the closet.
I frowned, noticing the tag attached to the keyhole.
For Hannah. To be opened on your wedding day.
The handwriting wasn't Luca’s.
May you like
It was my mother's.
