Chapter 2 - THE PHOTOGRAPH THAT DESTROYED HER LIES

The dining room of the Moretti mansion fell into a suffocating silence.

Forty wealthy guests stopped breathing. The clinking of crystal glasses ceased. All eyes shifted from the burned, trembling hands of Gianna Moretti to the pale, stricken face of Vanessa Bellini.

Luca Moretti didn't move. His dark eyes remained locked on his fiancée.

“What is Gianna talking about, Vanessa?”

His voice wasn't a shout. It was a dangerous, quiet rumble that made the hair on my arms stand up. As a maid who had served this family for nearly a year, I knew that tone. It was the tone Luca used right before someone's life was permanently dismantled.

Vanessa swallowed hard, her throat visibly bobbing.

“Luca, she’s unwell,” Vanessa stammered, stepping back so her red silk gown brushed against the serving cart. “Look at her. She’s traumatized from her husband leaving. She’s inventing fantasies.”

“I’m not inventing anything,” Gianna said.

Gianna slowly reached into the pocket of her faded black dress. Her swollen, cracked fingers fumbled with something small.

“You told Luca you met him at that charity gala three years ago,” Gianna said, her voice shaking but resolute. “You told him your parents died when you were young, and you built your life from nothing.”

“Because it’s the truth!” Vanessa snapped, looking at the whispering guests. “Luca, make her leave! She is ruining our engagement!”

“Let her speak,” Luca commanded.

Gianna pulled her hand from her pocket. She placed a small, silver object onto the white linen tablecloth.

It was an old, tarnished photograph, encased in a cracked glass frame.

Luca slowly walked toward his sister. He picked up the photograph. I stood close enough to see it. It was a picture of a much younger Luca, maybe fifteen years old, standing next to his late father, the formidable Don Moretti.

But there was a young girl in the background. A teenager with striking, dark features, hiding behind the kitchen door of this very mansion.

It was Vanessa.

“Answer me, Vanessa,” Luca whispered, his eyes fixed on the photo. “Why were you in my father’s house twenty years ago?”

Vanessa’s perfectly painted lips trembled. The revelation shattered her carefully crafted narrative. She wasn't a wealthy socialite who stumbled into his life. She had been there all along.

“He... he took me in,” Vanessa cried, tears spilling down her cheeks. “My father owed your family a debt, Luca! Your father took me as collateral. I was a servant in the guest house. I changed my last name to escape the shame. I just wanted you to love me for me, not for the miserable girl I used to be!”

A wave of sympathy rippled through the older guests. Even I felt a sudden twist of pity. Was she telling the truth? Was the villain actually a victim of the old mafia ways?

Luca’s expression softened for a fraction of a second. He remembered the cruelties his father had inflicted on people.

“You should have told me,” Luca said quietly.

“I was terrified you’d see me as property!” Vanessa sobbed, burying her face in her hands.

It was a brilliant reversal. In thirty seconds, Vanessa had turned herself from a scheming liar into a tragic survivor.

But Gianna wasn't crying.

“You’re lying,” Gianna whispered.

“Gianna, enough,” Luca said, raising a hand. “If my father hurt her—”

“Our father didn't hurt her!” Gianna screamed, slamming her burned hands onto the table. “Our father didn't take her as collateral, Luca! He took her in because her father murdered our mother!”

The room erupted. Guests gasped, clutching their pearls and suit jackets.

My breath caught in my throat. Luca’s mother had died in a supposed car accident when he was a teenager. That was the family tragedy.

Luca turned completely white. “What did you just say?”

“Her father cut the brakes on Mom's car,” Gianna sobbed, pointing a shaking finger at Vanessa. “Dad found out. He killed her father, and to pay for his guilt, he hid the murderer's daughter in the guest house. She’s known who we are her whole life, Luca. She didn't fall in love with you. She infiltrated us.”

Vanessa dropped her hands. The tears vanished from her face, replaced by a cold, terrifying glare.

Before Luca could process the devastating truth, the heavy double doors of the dining room burst open.

Three of Luca’s bodyguards dragged a man into the room. He was battered, his face bleeding, and he was gasping for air.

It was Daniel. Gianna’s estranged husband.

“Luca!” Daniel choked out, spitting blood onto the marble floor. “Luca, you have to help me!”

Gianna screamed and ran toward him. “Daniel! What happened?!”

May you like

Daniel looked up at his wife with pure agony in his eyes. He wasn't holding a weapon. He was tightly clutching a tiny, torn blue child's coat.

“I tried to stop them, Gianna,” Daniel wept, holding the tiny coat out to her. “I tried to give the money back. But they took him. They took our son.”
