Chapter 9 - THE COAT STAINED WITH REGRET

“Gianna, put the gun down!” Luca yelled, his voice echoing through the vaulted ceilings of the cathedral.

Gianna didn't blink. She kept the heavy shotgun leveled squarely at Vanessa’s chest. The woman who had orchestrated her mother’s murder twenty years ago was now moments away from killing the only witness left.

“You ruined my life, Vanessa,” Gianna spat, tears of pure hatred streaming down her face. “You manipulated Daniel. You almost got my son killed tonight!”

“I didn't force you to fake a kidnapping, Gianna,” Vanessa said, her voice surprisingly calm despite the weapon aimed at her. “You did that yourself. Your greed ruined your life.”

Answer one: Gianna had stolen a police weapon to tie up the final loose end to secure her own freedom.

Open two: How could we stop a desperate, unhinged mother with nothing left to lose?

“Shoot her, and you’ll never see Leo again!” Luca shouted, walking slowly down the center aisle. “The police are already looking for you, Gianna! If you pull that trigger, you spend the rest of your life in a cage!”

“I’m already in a cage!” Gianna screamed, her hands trembling violently on the pump of the shotgun. “Daniel is bleeding to death in a hospital because of her! My son is terrified! I have nothing left!”

A sudden, sharp reversal cut through the tension.

The massive cathedral doors pushed open behind Gianna.

Standing there in the cold night air, holding the hand of a frightened six-year-old boy, was the hospital nurse who had been caring for Gianna’s husband.

“Mommy?”

Gianna froze. The sound of little Leo’s voice shattered the heavy silence in the church.

Leo was wearing the tiny, torn blue coat that Daniel had brought into the mansion hours ago. It was stained with Daniel’s blood from when he had hugged his father at the train station.

“Leo?” Gianna gasped, lowering the barrel of the shotgun slightly. “What are you doing here? How did you find me?”

A man stepped out from the shadows behind the nurse.

It was Daniel.

He was in a wheelchair, pale as a ghost, an IV line taped to his arm, and a thick bandage wrapped around his chest. He had forced the doctors to let him leave.

“I knew you’d come here,” Daniel wheezed, his voice weak but filled with absolute certainty. “You always come to your father’s grave when you think you’ve lost.”

Escalation: Daniel wasn't dead. He had survived surgery and risked his life to stop his wife from crossing the final line into becoming a monster.

“Daniel,” Gianna sobbed, dropping the shotgun entirely. It clattered loudly onto the stone floor. She fell to her knees, burying her face in her hands.

Daniel wheeled himself forward. He didn't look at Luca. He didn't look at Vanessa. He looked only at his wife.

He reached out a trembling hand and gently touched Gianna’s shoulder.

“It’s over, Gigi,” Daniel whispered. “The lies are over. The money doesn't matter. Let Marco rot in prison. Let Vanessa go. Just come home to us.”

Gianna looked up, her face a mask of profound regret and sorrow. She looked at Leo, who was staring at his mother with wide, frightened eyes.

She remembered the burns on her hands. She had ruined those hands working at a commercial laundry just to buy her son food. She had loved him so fiercely, yet her obsession with her father’s dark legacy had nearly cost him his life.

“I’m sorry,” Gianna wept, crawling toward her husband and son. She buried her face in Leo’s small, blood-stained coat. “I’m so sorry, my baby.”

Leo wrapped his little arms around his mother’s neck. “It’s okay, Mommy. Don't cry.”

Luca watched his sister break down. For twenty years, he had believed she was an innocent victim. Now he knew she was flawed, broken, and guilty of a terrible sin. But as he watched Daniel stroke her hair, choosing forgiveness over vengeance, Luca realized that the cycle of violence had to end tonight.

Luca turned to Vanessa.

“Go,” Luca said softly.

Vanessa looked at him, her eyes filled with a complicated mix of gratitude and sorrow. She reached into her pocket and pulled out the tarnished photograph—the picture of her and Luca’s father from twenty years ago.

She dropped it onto the floor, leaving her past behind.

Without a word, Vanessa turned and walked out of the side door of the cathedral, disappearing into the Chicago night forever.

Luca bent down and picked up the shotgun. He unloaded the shells, rendering it harmless. He looked at me, standing frozen near the altar.

“Emma,” Luca said.

I walked over to him, my legs feeling like jelly.

“It’s over,” he said, his dark eyes softening.

I let out a breath I felt like I had been holding for hours. But as I looked at the broken family sobbing by the doors, I realized something was missing.

Vanessa had left. Gianna had surrendered. The ledger was in Luca’s hands.

But there was one final secret.

“Mr. Moretti,” I said hesitantly. “Before Marco kidnapped Leo... Vanessa told me something in the dining room.”

Luca frowned. “What did she say?”

I reached into my apron pocket. I bypassed the child's drawing and pulled out a delicate, glittering object I had found on the floor of the mansion hours ago.

It was a woman’s diamond necklace. But it wasn't Gianna’s.

“She told me that the woman who paid Daniel to leave Gianna... wasn't her,” I whispered.

Luca stared at the diamond necklace in my hand. He recognized it immediately.

Cliffhanger: Luca’s face turned pale as he looked at the necklace. “That belongs to your mother, Emma.”
