Chapter 12 - THE MONGUE AND THE FUTURE

The heavy wooden door splintered inward, sending the tactical men scrambling for their weapons.

Luca Moretti stepped through the threshold. He wasn't wearing a suit. He was wearing a tactical vest over a black shirt, holding a customized assault rifle. His eyes were cold, dead, and locked onto the man holding me by the throat.

"Let her go," Luca commanded, his voice vibrating with absolute authority.

The leader hesitated, pulling his gun and aiming it at my head. "Back off, Luca! We have the right to the empire! Vincenzo wanted the old blood to rule!"

"Vincenzo is dead," Luca said, raising his rifle. "And so is his empire."

Luca fired.

The shot was deafening, but pinpoint accurate. It struck the leader in the shoulder, spinning him backward and forcing him to drop me. I scrambled away, sliding across the kitchen tiles to cover Anna and Grace.

Rossi and three other guards flooded through the broken doorway, instantly subduing the remaining two loyalists. Within seconds, the threat was neutralized.

Luca dropped his rifle and ran to me, sliding to his knees.

"Emma," he breathed, pulling me into a crushing embrace. "Are you hurt? Did he hurt you?"

"I'm okay," I gasped, burying my face in his neck, the smell of gunpowder and adrenaline washing over me. "Luca, the box... Grace had it. They smashed it."

Luca looked up at the granite counter, seeing the ruined wood and gears. Then, he saw the parchment map.

He picked it up, his brow furrowing as he studied the red 'X' over the hospital morgue.

"My mother told me," I explained rapidly, standing up with him. "Celia blackmailed Dr. Evans. He did something in the morgue thirteen years ago. He hid the original trust portfolio there. That map tells us where."

Luca's eyes darkened. "Rossi. Call the cleanup crew for these three. Emma, we are going to St. Jude's."

Two Hours Later.

St. Jude's Hospital had closed five years ago due to funding cuts. The building was a hollow, decaying shell of brick and shattered windows on the edge of the city.

We descended into the basement, our flashlights cutting through the thick dust. The air was freezing, smelling of mildew and old chemicals.

Following the map, we navigated the labyrinth of empty corridors until we reached the old morgue. The stainless steel body lockers lined the walls, rusted and silent.

Luca looked at the map, then at the wall of lockers. The red 'X' corresponded to locker number 42.

He walked over, gripped the heavy handle, and pulled.

The tray slid out with a screech of rusted metal.

It wasn't empty.

Resting on the steel tray was a skeletal remain, wrapped in a degraded plastic sheet. But tucked safely beneath the skull was a heavy, leather-bound portfolio with the gold Moretti crest.

I covered my mouth in horror. "Who is that?"

Luca carefully pulled the portfolio free. "I think this is the man Dr. Evans murdered to protect his illegal clinic practice. Celia found out, and used it to force him to hide the portfolio with the body. Nobody checks an occupied morgue locker."

Luca opened the leather flap. The original, ink-signed trust documents were pristine, preserved in plastic sleeves.

He flipped to the final page.

"It's all here," Luca said softly. "The exact stipulations. Vincenzo wrote that if the child’s parentage was ever compromised, the entire empire would liquidate, and the funds would be donated to the city."

I looked at him. "He would rather destroy the family wealth than let a Romano touch it."

"Yes," Luca smiled. "But Antonio is in prison. Grace is safe. And with this original document, I can legally rewrite the trust. I'm tearing down the old empire, Emma. No more mafia. No more blood money."

He looked around the dark, haunted basement, then down at the portfolio.

"I'm liquidating the illegal assets. I'm turning the legitimate businesses into a foundation. The Moretti name is going to stand for something else now."

One Year Later.

The ballroom of the newly established Moretti Foundation glittered with light.

It was Grace's fourteenth birthday. She was dancing with her friends in the center of the room, wearing a beautiful blue dress, laughing freely. Anna sat at a table nearby, looking radiant and completely at peace, talking with my mother.

I stood on the balcony, looking out over the Chicago skyline.

The violent shadows of the past had finally burned away. The loyalists were in prison. The Romano threat was neutralized. The family was whole.

Strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind. Luca rested his chin on my shoulder, kissing my neck softly.

"You're hiding from the party, Mrs. Moretti," he whispered.

I smiled, leaning back into my husband's embrace. The gold wedding band on my finger caught the city lights.

"Just catching my breath," I murmured. "It's been a wild year."

"We survived," Luca said, turning me around to face him. He looked down at me with an ocean of love in his dark eyes. "You gave me a life I never thought I deserved, Emma."

I reached up, gently touching his cheek. "We built it together."

Inside, a soft, familiar melody began to play over the speakers. Luca had hired a master craftsman to rebuild the wooden music box. He had recorded the lullaby, and now, it was playing for Grace's birthday dance.

Luca took my hand, stepping back slightly and bowing with a charming, roguish smile.

"May I have this dance?" he asked.

May you like

I smiled, the happiest I had ever been in my entire life.

"Always."
