Chapter 8 - THE FLAMES AND THE PROMISE

The mansion was a war zone.
Thick, black smoke rolled down the velvet-lined corridors, stinging my eyes and burning my throat. The deafening crack of automatic weapons echoed from the first floor as Luca’s security team engaged Marco’s men in the grand foyer.
"Stay low!" Luca roared, pulling me to my feet and shoving Anna and Grace ahead of us toward the servant’s staircase.
We couldn't use the main stairs; the fighting was too intense. We scrambled down the narrow, unlit spiral staircase used by the staff. My heart hammered against my ribs like a trapped bird. I gripped Grace’s hand so tightly my knuckles ached.
"Mr. Moretti, the panic room is on the other side of the kitchen!" I yelled over the gunfire. "They’ll see us cross the hall!"
Luca stopped at the bottom of the stairs, peering around the corner into the massive, stainless-steel kitchen. The windows overlooking the courtyard had been blown out. Two of Marco’s men were climbing through the shattered glass, assault rifles raised.
Luca didn't hesitate. He stepped out from cover, firing three precise shots. Both men dropped instantly.
"Go! Now!" Luca ordered, waving us forward.
We sprinted across the kitchen floor, slipping on shattered plates and spilled water. The heavy steel door to the basement was just ten feet away.
But as Anna reached for the handle, the kitchen doors swung open violently.
Marco Romano stepped into the room.
He wasn't wearing his tailored suit anymore. He wore a tactical vest, his face smeared with ash, looking like a demon rising from hell. He raised a suppressed pistol, pointing it directly at Luca's chest.
"End of the line, Luca," Marco said, his voice terrifyingly calm amid the chaos. "Give me the girl, and I'll let the rest of you burn."
Luca raised his weapon, but Marco had the drop on him. If Luca fired, Marco would fire, and they would both die.
"You don't want her, Marco," Anna cried out, stepping in front of Grace, shielding her daughter with her own body. "You just want the money. Take the trust. Let her go."
Marco laughed, a harsh, grating sound. "I want the money, yes. But a king needs an heir. And Grace is the key to both."
He cocked the hammer of his gun.
I looked around frantically. I was standing next to the massive, industrial gas stove. A heavy cast-iron skillet full of hot grease from the aborted birthday dinner was still sitting on the back burner.
I didn't think. I just reacted.
I grabbed the handle of the skillet and hurled the boiling grease directly at Marco.
It caught him across the chest and neck. Marco screamed in agony, his shot going wild, shattering the ceiling tiles above Luca's head.
"Get in the basement!" Luca roared, shoving Marco backward with a brutal kick to the chest.
I pulled Grace through the heavy steel door, Anna right behind us. Luca backed in last, firing two more cover shots before slamming the massive vault door shut and spinning the locking wheel.
The heavy clank of the deadbolts sliding into place felt like the loudest sound in the world.
The panic room was a concrete bunker underneath the wine cellar. It was stocked with water, medical supplies, and a secure communication terminal. The silence inside was jarring compared to the war raging above us.
Anna collapsed against the concrete wall, pulling Grace into a desperate, crushing hug. The thirteen-year-old was finally crying, sobbing into her mother's shoulder.
"I've got you," Anna whispered, kissing the top of her daughter's head. "I've got you, my sweet girl. I'm never letting you go again."
I leaned against the heavy steel table in the center of the room, my hands shaking violently. The adrenaline was wearing off, leaving me dizzy and terrified.
Luca walked over to the communications terminal and began typing rapidly. He was bleeding from a graze on his cheek, his suit ruined, but he looked incredibly focused.
"Rossi," Luca spoke into the secure mic. "Status."
Static hissed. Then, Rossi's breathless voice came through. "We pushed them out of the foyer, Boss. Police sirens are inbound. Marco’s men are retreating."
"Marco is still in the kitchen. Lock it down. Do not let him escape."
"Copy that."
Luca turned off the mic and let out a long, heavy breath. He looked across the small room. He looked at Anna and Grace, finally reunited.
Then, he looked at me.
He crossed the room in two strides. He didn't say a word. He just reached out and pulled me into his chest.
I froze for a second, shocked by the sudden intimacy, before melting into his embrace. His arms were strong, secure, and smelled of smoke and expensive cologne.
"You saved my life," Luca whispered into my hair. "Twice in one night."
"I couldn't let him hurt you," I murmured, my voice muffled against his chest.
He pulled back slightly, his dark eyes locking onto mine. The barrier between employer and maid had completely burned away. There was only raw, undeniable connection.
"I'm going to the bank," Luca said, his voice firm. "I'm getting that ledger. Tomorrow morning, this nightmare ends."
Suddenly, the secure terminal beeped. An incoming video feed from the security cameras above.
Luca tapped the screen.
The feed showed the kitchen. Marco wasn't there. But someone else was.
It was Celia.
She had escaped the wine cellar during the explosion. She was standing in the ruined kitchen, holding a lighter over the ruptured gas line of the stove I had used.
She looked directly into the security camera.
May you like
"If I can't have this empire, Luca," Celia's voice crackled over the intercom, twisted by madness. "Nobody will."
She dropped the lighter.
