Chapter 4 - THE TORN PHOTOGRAPH

The accusation hung in the air, heavy and suffocating.

Michael stood perfectly still, his face pale as death. The fifty guests shifted uncomfortably, murmuring in low, shocked voices. The scandal had just evolved from murder to betrayal of the highest order.

Luca stepped toward his brother, the torn photograph crushed in his fist.

“Is this why you let Vanessa stay in my house?” Luca demanded, his voice a low, terrifying growl. “Is this why you never told me Catherine went to the hospital? Because you were sleeping with my wife, and Vanessa was blackmailing you?”

Vanessa let out a sharp, triumphant laugh.

“Finally!” Vanessa cried, stepping forward, her confidence suddenly returning. “Tell him, Michael! Tell your perfect, terrifying brother what a traitor you are! Catherine didn't disappear because of me. She disappeared because she got pregnant with Michael’s baby, and they were terrified you’d kill them both!”

My heart hammered against my ribs. I looked at Michael. He looked entirely broken.

“Is it true?” Luca asked. The pain in his eyes was unbearable to witness. The mafia boss, a man feared across the country, looked utterly shattered by the thought of his brother and his wife betraying him.

Michael closed his eyes. A single tear slipped down his cheek.

“Yes,” Michael whispered. “Vanessa was blackmailing me with that photograph for five years.”

Luca raised his hand, curling it into a fist. He looked ready to strike his own blood.

“But it’s not what it looks like,” Michael said, his voice suddenly hardening. He opened his eyes and looked directly at Luca. “I wasn't having an affair with Catherine, Luca. I was hiding her.”

Vanessa’s smirk faltered. “What?”

“The kiss in that photograph was staged,” Michael said, stepping closer to his brother, refusing to back down. “Catherine staged it. She begged me to help her create a false motive.”

Luca’s hand dropped. “A false motive for what?”

“For running away,” Michael said.

The reversal was staggering. I watched as the pieces shifted again, creating an entirely new, heartbreaking picture.

“Catherine knew Vanessa was poisoning her,” Michael explained, his voice thick with emotion. “But she also knew Vanessa had connections to the Falcone family. If Catherine went to the police, the Falcones would have retaliated. They would have targeted Mia. They would have targeted you.”

Luca looked down at six-year-old Mia, who was clinging to my wet apron.

“So Catherine decided to disappear,” Michael said softly. “But she needed a reason that you would believe. A reason that would make you hate her enough not to come looking for her. So, she asked me to take that photograph with her. She wanted you to think she was a cheating coward, so you would move on and stay safe.”

“And you agreed to this?” Luca asked, his voice breaking.

“I did it to save her life!” Michael shouted, tears streaming freely now. “She was dying, Luca! Vanessa’s poison was destroying her organs! She needed to leave the country to get secret medical treatment. I bought her the plane ticket. I drove her to the airport the night after she went to Emily’s mother at the hospital.”

The room was completely silent.

Vanessa’s mouth opened and closed, but no sound came out. Her ultimate blackmail weapon had just been disarmed.

“If Catherine survived,” Luca whispered, “why didn't she come back?”

Michael swallowed hard. He looked at me, then back at Luca.

“Because Vanessa found out I helped her,” Michael said. “Vanessa intercepted the photograph before Catherine could leave it for you. She held it over my head. She told me if Catherine ever returned to Chicago, she would show you the photo, and she would personally ensure Mia didn't wake up the next morning.”

I gasped, pulling Mia closer to my legs. The little girl buried her face in my soaked uniform, trembling.

Luca turned his head. He looked at Vanessa.

There was no rage left in his expression. There was only an absolute, terrifying void.

“You threatened my daughter,” Luca said softly.

Vanessa backed away, her heels catching on the carpet. “Luca, he’s lying! Michael is trying to cover his own tracks! He’s the one who wanted Catherine gone!”

“No one believes you anymore, Vanessa,” Alessandro Romano said quietly from the table.

The Italian businessman stood up, buttoning his suit jacket. He looked at Luca with a solemn expression.

“Mr. Moretti,” Alessandro said. “I came to this dinner tonight under false pretenses. Vanessa promised me a lucrative shipping contract if I took Emily to Rome and kept her there. I did not know I was participating in the exile of an innocent woman to cover up an attempted murder.”

Vanessa shrieked, pointing at Alessandro. “You traitor!”

“But there is something Vanessa didn't know about me, either,” Alessandro continued, ignoring her entirely.

He reached into his tailored suit jacket and pulled out a small, heavy object. He walked around the table and placed it directly in Luca’s hands.

It was a heavy gold watch.

But it wasn't a men’s watch. It was a woman’s vintage timepiece.

“My sister gave me that watch before she went into hiding,” Alessandro said softly.

Luca stared at the gold watch. His breath hitched.

“This is Catherine’s watch,” Luca whispered.

The reversal hit the room again.

Alessandro Romano wasn't just a random Italian businessman.

“My name is Alessandro Romano,” the man said, looking directly at Vanessa with eyes like crushed ice. “But five years ago, before my sister married you, her name was Catherine Romano.”

Alessandro was Catherine’s older brother.

And as Vanessa let out a horrified gasp, Alessandro turned to me.

“Emily,” he said gently. “My sister didn't just send me here to expose Vanessa. She sent me here to return something to you.”

Alessandro reached into his pocket one last time.

And what he pulled out made my blood run completely cold.

It was a heavy, blood-stained winter coat.
