Chapter 8 - THE HEIRLOOM'S WEIGHT

The heavy silver bracelet rested in my palms, the metal cool against my skin, but it felt as though it was burning a hole straight through my chest.

I stared at the intricate Moretti crest carved into the silver. This wasn't just a piece of jewelry. It was a crown. It was an endorsement from the woman who had suffered everything to protect this family.

“Catherine, I… I can’t,” I stammered, trying to hand the bracelet back. “I’m just an employee. I wash the floors. This belongs to your family.”

Catherine gently pushed my hands back toward my chest. Her dark eyes were kind but completely unyielding.

“Family isn't just about blood, Emily,” Catherine said softly. “It’s about who stands beside you when the house is burning down. You threw yourself in front of a bullet tonight. You wore your mother’s secret around your neck for eight months to protect us. You are more Moretti than half the people in this room.”

She looked over my shoulder at Luca.

“Take care of her, Luca,” Catherine said. “She’s a rare light. Don't let her burn out.”

Luca stepped forward, his eyes locked onto Catherine. There was a lifetime of unsaid words between them—grief, apologies, and profound respect.

“Thank you, Catherine,” Luca said, his voice thick with emotion. “For everything. I will make sure the Falcones never breathe in your direction again.”

Catherine offered a small, peaceful smile. She knelt down one last time to hug Mia, whispering a promise that she would be back to visit every single week, and that there were no more secrets.

Then, Catherine stood up, linked arms with her brother Alessandro, and walked out the front doors, stepping back into the quiet life she had fought so hard to reclaim.

The dining room slowly began to empty. The guests, realizing the drama had concluded and the Moretti empire was secure, paid their quiet respects to Luca and filed out into the Chicago night.

Soon, the grand room was empty, save for the shattered crystal, the spilled wine, and the echoes of a nightmare finally ending.

Michael picked up Mia, who was yawning, exhausted from the adrenaline, and carried her upstairs to her bedroom, promising to read her a story.

I was left standing alone near the table with Luca.

The silence between us was heavy, charged with an energy I didn't know how to navigate. The mafia boss stood a few feet away, his suit jacket ruined by the bullet hole, his tattooed hands resting on the back of a chair.

He was looking at me.

Not the way a boss looks at a maid. But the way a man looks at a woman he just realized he cannot live without.

“Emily,” Luca said softly.

My heart did a violent flip. “Yes, Mr. Moretti?”

Luca winced slightly at the formal title. He walked slowly toward me, closing the distance until he was standing right in front of me.

“I think we can drop the 'Mr. Moretti' after tonight,” he murmured, his deep voice sending a shiver down my spine.

He reached out and gently touched the thin, drying line of blood on the back of my neck where Vanessa had ripped the chain away. His touch was incredibly tender, a stark contrast to the violence he was capable of.

“I’m sorry,” Luca whispered, his dark eyes filled with regret. “I’m sorry I brought that monster into this house. I’m sorry I didn't see what she was doing to you, or to your mother.”

“You didn't know, Luca,” I said, looking up into his eyes. “She fooled everyone.”

“She didn't fool you,” Luca pointed out. “You saw right through her. And you stood your ground.”

He looked down at my soaked uniform, smelling strongly of champagne and red wine.

“You need to get out of these wet clothes,” Luca said gently. “Go to the guest suite on the third floor. There’s a hot shower and clean clothes waiting for you. I’ll have my private doctor look at that cut on your neck.”

“I can’t stay,” I said, stepping back slightly, clutching the silver bracelet to my chest.

Luca’s brow furrowed. “Why not? It’s two in the morning, Emily. It’s not safe for you to travel.”

“I have to go to the hospital,” I explained, tears suddenly pricking my eyes as the adrenaline faded and reality set back in. “My mother… she’s alone. She doesn't know Vanessa is gone. She’s probably terrified.”

Luca’s expression softened into something incredibly warm. He didn't argue. He simply nodded.

“Then we go to the hospital,” Luca said.

“We?” I asked, surprised.

“I’m not letting you out of my sight tonight, Emily,” Luca stated, his tone leaving no room for argument. “My driver is bringing the car around. I’ll take you to see your mother myself.”

Thirty minutes later, I was sitting in the back of Luca’s armored SUV, wearing a dry, oversized cashmere sweater he had given me from his own closet. The scent of his expensive cedar cologne wrapped around me like a blanket.

Luca sat beside me in the dim light, staring out the tinted window at the passing city lights.

As we pulled up to St. Jude’s Hospital, Luca’s phone buzzed. He looked at a text message, and his jaw tightened.

“What is it?” I asked nervously.

“The FBI raided the Falcone estate,” Luca said, putting the phone away. “They found Leo. He tried to run, but they apprehended him. The entire syndicate is being dismantled.”

I let out a long breath of relief. It was truly over.

We walked into the hospital together. The night staff recognized me immediately and let us into the long-term care wing.

I pushed open the door to Room 412.

The room was dimly lit by a bedside lamp. My mother lay in the hospital bed, her frail body looking so small against the white sheets. She was awake, staring blankly at the ceiling.

“Mom?” I whispered.

My mother turned her head slowly. When she saw me, her eyes widened. But when she saw the towering, dark-haired man step into the room behind me, the heart monitor beside her bed began to beep rapidly.

She recognized him.

She thought the mafia had finally come to finish the job.
