Chapter 11 - THE MIDNIGHT PHONE CALL FROM THE HOSPITAL

My fingers trembled as I hit the green answer button and pressed the phone to my ear. The joy in the living room suddenly felt a million miles away, replaced by the terrifying, familiar grip of panic.

“Hello?” I whispered, stepping backward into the quiet hallway.

“Hi, is this Hannah Collins?” a bright, professional voice asked.

“Yes,” I breathed, bracing myself against the cool marble wall. “Is it my mother? Is she okay? Did the surgery fail?”

“Oh, no, Ms. Collins! Your mother is doing wonderfully,” the nurse said quickly, her tone instantly reassuring. “Her vitals are perfect, and she’s sleeping comfortably. I’m so sorry to call this late and frighten you.”

I let out a massive, shuddering breath, closing my eyes. “Thank God. Then… why are you calling?”

“I’m calling from the hospital’s billing department,” the woman explained. “We received an electronic wire transfer about twenty minutes ago. The amount covered your mother’s entire remaining surgical debt, the upcoming physical therapy sessions, and a private, in-home nurse for the next three months.”

My jaw dropped. I knew Luca had promised to clear the debt, but I hadn't expected him to do it at midnight, in the middle of a family crisis, and I certainly hadn't expected the in-home care.

“The benefactor insisted it be processed immediately so it would be on your mother’s chart when she wakes up tomorrow,” the nurse continued with a warm smile in her voice. “You don't owe the hospital a single dime, Ms. Collins. We just wanted to confirm the receipt.”

“Thank you,” I choked out, happy tears spilling freely down my cheeks. “Thank you so much.”

I hung up the phone and leaned against the wall, covering my face with my hands.

For the past year, I had lived in a constant state of exhausting, suffocating anxiety. I had scrubbed floors, polished silver, and endured Vanessa’s cruel humiliations, all while terrified that a single mistake would leave my mother homeless and without care.

In one night, the nightmare was over.

I wiped my eyes and walked back into the living room.

Luca had finally coaxed Leo to sleep. The little boy was curled up on the plush sofa, wrapped in Marco’s heavy blanket, his breathing soft and even. Sofia and Gabriel were sitting quietly nearby, watching the boy sleep with peaceful smiles.

Luca stood up and walked over to me.

“Is everything alright, Hannah?” he asked, noticing my red eyes.

“The hospital just called,” I smiled, my voice thick with gratitude. “They received the transfer. Luca… you didn't have to pay for the in-home nurse. That’s too much.”

Luca shook his head gently. “It’s exactly what your mother needs to recover properly. And besides, I need my new Estate Manager focused on running this house, not worrying about medical bills.”

He reached out and gently squeezed my shoulder. “Go home, Hannah. Get some sleep. Tomorrow, we start fresh.”

I nodded, feeling a profound sense of loyalty to this man that had nothing to do with fear, and everything to do with respect.

Before I left, I walked into the kitchen to find Rosa.

The seventy-nine-year-old nanny was sitting at the small wooden table in the staff breakroom, drinking a cup of chamomile tea. She looked incredibly tired, but the heavy burden she had carried for thirty years was gone from her faded blue eyes.

I walked over and hugged her gently from behind.

“Thank you, Rosa,” I whispered. “For everything you did tonight.”

Rosa patted my hand. “We protect the people we love, Hannah. That is the only rule that matters.”

I took off my black maid’s apron for the final time. I folded it neatly and left it on the counter. I wouldn't be wearing a uniform tomorrow.

I walked out the back doors of the mansion and into the cool, crisp Chicago night. The rain had stopped, leaving the air smelling fresh and clean.

I got into my small car and started the engine, feeling lighter than I had in years.

But as I pulled out of the service driveway and headed toward the front gates, my headlights swept across a figure standing near the perimeter wall.

It was a woman.

She was wearing a long, dark coat, her blonde hair pulled back tightly, staring intently through the wrought-iron gates at the mansion.
