Chapter 10 - THE ENVELOPE THAT HELD A MOTHER'S FINAL WISH

I looked down at the faded, yellowed envelope in Rosa’s trembling hands.
The handwriting on the front was elegant, written in faded blue ink. It simply said: For Luca. When the truth is finally known.
“What is this, Rosa?” I asked softly, taking the envelope.
Rosa smiled, a bittersweet expression that spoke of decades of kept secrets. “It is a letter from Elena.”
My breath hitched. “From Elena? But she’s been in hiding for six years.”
“I know,” Rosa nodded. “Six years ago, right after the staged hit-and-run, Elena managed to call me from a payphone. She told me Matteo had forced himself on her. She told me she was pregnant, and that she had to disappear to protect the baby from him.”
Rosa looked toward the living room, where Luca was currently laughing with Leo, showing the little boy the massive stone fireplace.
“Elena knew that if she told Luca the truth back then, Luca would have killed Matteo,” Rosa explained quietly. “And a war between brothers would have destroyed the family. Elena sacrificed her own happiness, her own life with Luca, to prevent him from becoming a kinslayer.”
Tears pricked my eyes. Elena hadn't just run away to survive; she had run away to protect the soul of the man she loved.
“She mailed me this letter a month after Leo was born, before Sofia found her and took the boy,” Rosa said. “Elena made me swear on a bible that I would only give it to Luca when Matteo’s treason was fully exposed, and the family was safe. That time is now, Hannah.”
I looked at the envelope. “Why are you giving it to me? You should be the one to hand it to him, Rosa.”
Rosa reached out and gently patted my cheek. Her hand felt warm and comforting.
“Because my role as the protector of this family is coming to an end, my dear,” Rosa smiled warmly. “I am old. I am tired. But you… you are the new Estate Manager. You proved your loyalty tonight. You are the one who will help guide this family into their new beginning. Give it to him.”
I nodded slowly, understanding the profound passing of the torch.
I walked into the grand living room. The fire was roaring in the hearth. Gabriel and Sofia were sitting on the plush sofa, their hands tightly intertwined, quietly catching up on six years of lost time.
Luca was sitting on the floor near the hearth, helping Leo build a towering structure out of wooden building blocks they had found in an old chest.
“Excuse me, Mr. Moretti,” I said softly.
Luca looked up, a genuine, relaxed smile on his face. “I told you, Hannah. It’s Luca.”
I knelt down beside him and handed him the faded envelope.
“Rosa asked me to give this to you,” I whispered. “It’s from Elena. She wrote it six years ago.”
Luca’s smile vanished, replaced by a look of sheer, breathless reverence. He took the envelope with shaking hands. He stared at the elegant handwriting, recognizing the script of the woman he had mourned every day for six years.
He slowly broke the seal and pulled out the single sheet of paper.
The room went quiet. Sofia and Gabriel stopped talking, watching Luca read the final words of his lost love.
Luca read the letter in silence. A single tear escaped his dark eyes, rolling down his cheek and falling onto the paper. But as he read further, the grief on his face slowly transformed into something else.
It transformed into profound, overwhelming peace.
He finished the letter, folded it carefully, and pressed it against his heart.
“What did she say, Luca?” Sofia asked gently.
Luca took a deep, shuddering breath. He looked at the little boy sitting next to him, playing with the wooden blocks.
“She said she was sorry she had to leave,” Luca whispered, his voice thick with emotion. “She said she named him Leo because it means lion, and she knew he would need to be brave. But mostly…”
Luca wiped his eyes and smiled down at the boy.
“She asked me to be his father.”
Leo looked up from his blocks, tilting his head slightly. “Are you going to be my dad?”
Luca reached out and gently pulled the little boy into a fierce, loving hug.
“If you’ll let me, Leo,” Luca wept, kissing the top of the boy’s head. “I would be honored to be your dad for the rest of my life.”
Leo wrapped his small arms around Luca’s neck, burying his face in Luca’s shoulder. It was the embrace of two fractured souls finally finding their missing piece in each other.
As I watched the family heal around the warmth of the fireplace, my phone suddenly buzzed in the pocket of my apron.
I pulled it out and looked at the caller ID.
It was the hospital where my mother was recovering.

My heart dropped. It was past midnight. Hospitals didn't call this late unless something was terribly wrong.
