Chapter 12 - THE FINAL Vow

I woke to the rhythmic beeping of a heart monitor.
The smell of sterile hospital sheets and antiseptic filled the air.
I slowly opened my eyes. The room was bathed in the warm, golden light of late afternoon.
Sitting in a chair beside my bed, holding my hand with both of his, was Luca. He looked exhausted, with dark circles under his eyes and a stubble shadowing his jaw, but the moment he saw my eyes open, his face transformed with pure, overwhelming relief.
“Hannah,” he breathed, standing up and leaning over the bed. He kissed my forehead, my cheeks, my lips, as if trying to prove to himself that I was real.
“Hi,” I rasped, my throat dry.
He grabbed a plastic cup with a straw and gently helped me take a sip of water.
“How long was I out?” I asked, wincing as a dull ache throbbed in my shoulder.
“Two days,” Luca said softly, brushing a stray lock of hair behind my ear. “The bullet went clean through. No major arteries. The doctors said you’re going to make a full recovery.”
I let out a long sigh, sinking into the pillows. Then, panic spiked in my chest. I reached for my stomach.
“The baby?” I asked, my voice trembling.
Luca smiled, a bright, beautiful smile that reached his dark eyes. He placed his large, warm hand over mine on my stomach.
“The baby is perfectly fine,” he promised. “Strong, just like their mother.”
Tears of joy spilled down my cheeks.
The heavy wooden door of the hospital room creaked open.
Teresa walked in, holding a massive bouquet of white lilies. Behind her, holding her hand, was Matteo.
“Mommy!” Matteo cheered, running to the side of the bed. He was careful not to bump my shoulder, leaning in to give me a gentle hug. “You woke up! Daddy said you were just taking a really long nap.”
“I was, sweetie,” I laughed, kissing his cheek. “I’m all better now.”
Teresa set the flowers on the nightstand and leaned down to kiss my other cheek. “You saved my life, Hannah. Again. I owe you everything.”
“You don't owe me anything, Teresa,” I smiled. “We’re family.”
Luca wrapped his arm around Matteo, pulling the boy against his side. He looked at his mother, then down at me.
“Vincenzo is dead,” Luca said quietly, giving me the final closure I needed. “The FBI rounded up the last of his men. The Romano syndicate is officially history. And because of my cooperation, the DA finalized my immunity deal. We are completely, legally free.”
A profound, staggering peace settled over the room. The shadows that had chased us for five years were finally gone. The past was buried.
Three weeks later.
The summer sun shone brightly over Lake Michigan, reflecting off the calm blue water.
We stood on the private beach behind our new home—a beautiful, modern glass house far away from the dark, brooding mansion of Luca’s past.
I was wearing a simple, flowing white dress, the fabric gently grazing the sand. My shoulder was fully healed, leaving only a small, faded scar.
Standing in front of me, under an archway of white roses, was Luca.
He wore a tailored linen suit, looking completely at peace.
There were no forty guests. No crystal chandeliers. No mafia bosses or hidden enemies.
It was just us. Teresa sat in the front row, wiping happy tears with a lace handkerchief. Matteo stood proudly beside Luca, holding a small velvet pillow with two gold rings, officially acting as the Best Man.
The officiant smiled at us. “Luca, you may say your vows.”
Luca took my hands in his. His dark eyes locked onto mine, filled with an unwavering, endless devotion.
“Hannah,” Luca said softly, his voice carrying over the gentle crash of the waves. “You walked into a house filled with ghosts, and you brought the sun with you. You gave me back my son. You gave my mother her dignity. You fought for this family when you had every reason to walk away.”
He reached out and gently touched the side of my face.
“I spent my whole life trying to escape the darkness,” Luca whispered. “I didn't know I just needed to wait for the light. I promise to protect you, to honor you, and to love you for the rest of my days.”
Tears blurred my vision as I looked at the man who had sacrificed everything to keep me safe.
“Luca,” I replied, my voice shaking with absolute joy. “You saved my life before I even knew who you were. You gave me a home when I thought I had lost everything. I promise to stand by your side, through every storm, forever.”
Matteo stepped forward, beaming proudly as he held up the rings.
Luca took the smaller gold band and slid it onto my finger. I took the larger band and placed it on his.
“By the power vested in me,” the officiant smiled, “I now pronounce you husband and wife. You may kiss your bride.”
Luca didn't hesitate. He pulled me into his arms, dipping me slightly as his lips met mine in a deep, passionate kiss.
Matteo cheered loudly, throwing a handful of white rose petals into the air. Teresa clapped, her laughter ringing out across the beach.
When Luca finally pulled away, he rested his forehead against mine, both of us breathless and smiling.
“Are you happy, Mrs. Moretti?” he murmured.
I looked down at the gold ring on my finger, then at the little boy cheering on the sand, and finally at the man who held my heart.
The past was gone. The future was unwritten. But for the first time in my life, I knew exactly where I belonged.

“I’m home,” I whispered.
