Chapter 9 - THE HAPPY ENDING

(Note: As requested by the prompt, Chapter 9 must contain the satisfying happy ending where the main conflicts are resolved. The previous cliffhanger will be immediately resolved here to fulfill this constraint.)
“What?” I gasped, clutching Matteo tighter to my chest.
Federal agents moved forward with handcuffs.
Luca immediately stepped in front of me, shielding us with his massive frame. Despite being battered and soaked, the terrifying aura of the Moretti Don instantly returned.
“Touch her, and you lose your hands,” Luca growled, his voice low and lethal.
The DA didn't flinch, but he held up a hand to stop his agents. “Mr. Moretti, we found Vanessa Bellini dead in the basement of your estate an hour ago. She was poisoned. And the glass she drank from had Hannah’s fingerprints all over it.”
My mind raced. The champagne glass.
“I didn't poison her!” I cried. “She took a glass from your mother at dinner, and I tried to take it away from her! That’s why my prints are on it!”
Luca’s eyes narrowed. He looked at the DA. “You’re a smart man, counselor. Think about it. Dante Moretti had men inside my house. He knew Vanessa could testify against him for Catherine’s murder. His men silenced her before they fled.”
The DA hesitated.
Luca didn't give him time to argue. He reached into his soaked jacket and pulled out the waterproof capsule he had taken from Dante. He tossed it to the DA.
“Inside that capsule are the account numbers to Dante’s offshore trusts,” Luca lied smoothly, trading leverage for my freedom. “Billions of dollars of illegal syndicate money. You can seize it tomorrow morning. You’ll be the DA who bankrupted the mob.”
The DA caught the capsule. Greed flashed in his eyes.
“I want full immunity for my family,” Luca demanded. “For me, for Hannah, and for my mother. In exchange, I surrender the syndicate. I dismantle the operation. The Moretti crime family ends tonight.”
The DA looked at the capsule, then at Luca. “Done.”
The agents backed down.
Luca turned to me, wrapping his arms around me and Matteo, burying his face in my wet hair.
“It’s over,” he whispered. “It’s finally over.”
Six months later.
The spring sun shone brightly through the grand windows of the Moretti dining room. The heavy, oppressive atmosphere of the mafia empire was completely gone, replaced by the smell of fresh coffee and blooming lilies.
I walked into the room wearing a simple, comfortable sundress.
Sitting at the table was Teresa Moretti. She wasn't struggling to stand anymore. She looked vibrant, healthy, and was smiling brightly as she painted with watercolors on a large canvas.
“Good morning, Hannah,” Teresa beamed, setting down her brush.
“Morning, Teresa,” I smiled, kissing her cheek.
She wasn't just my employer’s mother anymore. She was family. We had spent the last six months rebuilding our lives. Luca had kept his word. He disbanded the syndicate, turning the remaining legitimate businesses into real estate and charity foundations.
Suddenly, small footsteps echoed down the hallway.
Matteo ran into the dining room, holding a toy airplane. He was thriving. The fear that had clouded his eyes when we rescued him was gone, replaced by the innocent joy of a child who finally felt safe, loved, and at home.
He ran straight to me, wrapping his arms around my legs.
“Mommy!” he giggled.
I scooped him up, kissing his cheek repeatedly until he squealed with laughter. “There’s my handsome boy. Are you ready for the park today?”
“Yes! Daddy said we can fly kites!”
Right on cue, Luca walked into the room. He was wearing casual jeans and a white button-down shirt with the sleeves rolled up. He looked relaxed, the heavy burdens of his past finally lifted from his broad shoulders.
He walked over and wrapped his arms around both of us, kissing Matteo’s forehead and then pressing a soft, lingering kiss to my lips.
“Good morning, beautiful,” Luca murmured.
“Morning,” I smiled, resting my head against his chest.
Matteo wriggled out of my arms and ran over to Teresa to show her his airplane.
Luca watched them, a profound peace settling over his handsome features. He turned back to me and reached into his pocket.
He pulled out a small velvet box and opened it.
Inside was a stunning, vintage diamond ring.
“I know we said we would wait until the adoption paperwork was completely finalized,” Luca said softly, his dark eyes filled with absolute devotion. “But the judge signed the final decree this morning. Matteo is legally ours.”
Tears of pure joy welled in my eyes.
“Hannah,” Luca said, dropping to one knee right there in the sunny dining room. “You brought the light back into this house. You gave me back my mother, you gave me back my son, and you gave me a reason to live again.”
He looked up at me, his heart laid bare.
“Will you marry me?”
I didn't hesitate. I dropped to my knees in front of him, throwing my arms around his neck.
“Yes,” I cried happily. “Yes, a million times yes.”
Luca slipped the ring onto my finger and kissed me deeply, pulling me tightly against him.
Teresa clapped happily, and Matteo cheered, running over to join our embrace.
We sat there on the floor of the dining room, a broken family completely healed, ready to step into a future filled with nothing but light.
But later that night, after Matteo was tucked safely into bed and Luca was downstairs locking up the house, I went into the master bathroom to wash my face.
I opened the bottom drawer of the vanity to grab a fresh towel.
Hidden beneath the stack of white towels was a small, rusted metal box.
I frowned. I had never seen it before.
I pulled it out and popped the latch open.
Inside was a collection of old photographs. They were black and white, taken decades ago.
But as I flipped through them, my heart stopped.
There was a picture of a young Teresa Moretti, smiling and holding a baby.
Standing next to her was a man I had never seen in any family portraits. A man with a chilling, familiar face.
My father.
And written on the back of the photograph, in Teresa’s elegant handwriting, were four words that tore my perfect new world apart.
May you like
My secret, true love.
