Chapter 7 - THE SHATTERED BLUE MUSIC BOX

The air in the guest house seemed to freeze.

For Vanessa.

I stared at the crisp white envelope in Luca’s trembling hand. It was impossible. Nora had died three years ago. Luca didn’t even meet Vanessa until a year and a half after the funeral, at a charity gala hosted by her father.

How could Nora have written a letter to a woman she never knew?

“That doesn’t make sense,” Eleanor whispered, her face pale. “Nora didn’t know the Bellini family. We ran in completely different circles.”

Luca turned the envelope over. The seal was unbroken. Nora’s elegant, looping handwriting was unmistakable.

“She knew her,” Luca said, his voice hollow. “She must have.”

Emma looked up, her eyes wide. “Daddy, why would Mommy write a letter to the mean lady?”

Luca didn’t answer. He stared at the envelope as if it were a bomb about to detonate.

Suddenly, the sound of crunching gravel echoed outside.

I looked through the broken doorway. Down the long driveway, the headlights of the Bellini family’s black SUV flickered on. They were leaving.

Luca’s eyes snapped up from the letter.

“Claire,” he barked. “Take Emma and Eleanor back to the main house. Lock the doors.”

“Yes, sir,” I said, rushing forward to take Emma’s hand.

But Luca wasn’t staying behind. He sprinted out of the guest house, cutting across the manicured lawn toward the driveway.

“Luca, wait!” Eleanor called out, but he was already gone.

I hurried Eleanor and Emma back toward the mansion. As we reached the back patio, I turned and saw Luca standing directly in the middle of the driveway, blocking the SUV’s path.

The heavy vehicle slammed on its brakes, tires screeching against the gravel, stopping just inches from his knees.

Luca walked around to the passenger side and yanked the door open.

I could hear Vanessa scream from inside.

Luca didn’t drag her out. He just stood there in the dark, holding the white envelope up to the interior light of the car.

I couldn’t hear what he was saying, but I saw Vanessa’s hands fly to her mouth in shock. She shook her head violently, sobbing. Luca leaned in closer, his voice carrying like thunder across the lawn.

“HOW DID SHE KNOW YOU?”

Vanessa’s voice cracked through the night air.

“I was her nurse, Luca! I was her hospice nurse!”

I stopped dead in my tracks.

Eleanor gasped, clutching her chest. “Oh, dear God.”

We stood frozen on the patio, watching the nightmare unfold in the driveway.

“You were her nurse?” Luca roared, pulling Vanessa out of the car by her arm. “You took care of my dying wife, and you never told me? When we met at the gala, you acted like you didn’t even know who I was!”

Vanessa fell to her knees on the gravel, crying hysterically. Vivian and Chloe stayed frozen in the car, too terrified to move.

“She told me to!” Vanessa screamed, tears ruining her face. “Nora told me to do it!”

Luca froze. “What are you talking about?”

“In her final weeks, you were never there, Luca!” Vanessa cried. “You couldn’t bear to watch her die, so you hid in your office! I was the one holding her hand! I was the one giving her morphine! She was so worried about you and Emma. She told me… she asked me to look after you when she was gone.”

Luca stumbled backward as if she had shot him.

“No,” he whispered.

“Yes!” Vanessa sobbed. “She said I was kind. She said I was young and beautiful and that you would need someone to pull you out of the dark. She told me to wait a year, to let you grieve, and then to find you. I orchestrated the meeting at the gala, Luca. I did it for her!”

Eleanor let out a broken wail and leaned against the patio pillar. “My daughter wouldn’t do that. She wouldn’t give her family to a monster.”

Luca stared down at the crying woman in the gravel.

“If she asked you to take care of us,” Luca said, his voice shaking with venom, “then why did you torture her mother? Why did you steal her things? Why did you break her daughter’s heart?”

Vanessa looked up, her eyes flashing with a sudden, twisted bitterness.

“Because you never loved me!” she screamed. “I did everything she asked! I loved you, I took care of your house, but you never looked at me the way you looked at her! You kept this house like a museum! Every Friday, that old woman came over and reminded everyone that I was just the replacement! I was drowning in her ghost, Luca! I had to erase her so I could breathe!”

Luca stared at her in absolute horror.

He didn’t yell. He didn’t hit her.

He just looked at her with profound pity.

“You didn’t erase her, Vanessa,” Luca said quietly. “You just proved that you could never be her.”

He threw the white envelope onto the gravel at her feet.

“I don’t care what she wrote in that letter,” Luca said. “You are dead to me.”

He turned around and walked back toward the house.

Vanessa scrambled to pick up the letter. She ripped it open with shaking hands.

As Luca reached the patio, we heard a sudden, agonizing scream from the driveway.

We turned to look.

Vanessa was staring at the letter in her hands. Her face was contorted in absolute devastation. She dropped the paper in the dirt and collapsed onto her stomach, weeping so loudly it echoed off the trees.

Luca didn’t even look back.

He walked past us into the house.

I ran down the steps into the dark grass, my curiosity overwhelming my fear. I hurried to the edge of the driveway and snatched the dropped letter from the gravel before Vivian could get out of the car.

I ran back to the patio and handed it to Eleanor.

Eleanor’s hands shook as she held her daughter’s final words to the light of the porch.

She read it aloud.

“Dear Vanessa,Thank you for making my final days painless. I saw the way you look at my husband when he visits the room. If you ever find your way into his heart, please know I give you my blessing. But I ask you one promise. Please, let my little girl keep her grandmother. And let her keep her memories of me. If you can love them both, you will have a beautiful life.”

May you like

Eleanor broke down sobbing.

Vanessa hadn’t just failed Nora. She had destroyed the only blessing she had ever been given.
