Chapter 6 - THE BRACELET OF THE TRUE HEIR

The silence under the bridge was heavier than the concrete above us.

"Wife?" Luca whispered, stepping back as if my mother had struck him. "Dante’s wife was my mother. She died when I was ten."

"She did," Evelyn said softly, her hands shaking as she held the ruby bracelet. "And Dante was broken. He was a ruthless boss, but the grief destroyed him. A year later, he met me. I was a civilian. A nurse. He fell in love."

I stared at my mother. The woman who worked double shifts, who bought her clothes at thrift stores, who saved coupons to afford groceries.

She was a Mafia Queen.

"We married in secret," Evelyn continued, the tears falling freely now. "He wanted to protect me from the Commission. When I got pregnant with you, Maggie, Dante was terrified. He knew if his enemies found out he had a new heir, they would use you against him."

Luca’s jaw clenched. "So he sent you away."

"He asked Richard Bellini to hide us," Evelyn nodded. "Richard owed Dante his life. Richard agreed to pretend to be Maggie’s father. He took the disgrace of a fake affair so that the rival families would ignore us."

The pieces fell into place with devastating clarity.

Richard hadn't abandoned me. He had sacrificed his own reputation to protect the daughter of his closest friend. And Vanessa’s mother, furious at Richard’s "betrayal," had made his life a living hell.

"Why didn't Dante ever come for us?" I asked, my voice cracking.

"He was going to," Evelyn sobbed. "When you turned eighteen, he was going to bring us home. But ten years ago... he was assassinated."

Luca closed his eyes. The grief of losing his father, mixed with the shock of gaining a sister, radiated from him.

"And when Dante died," Vanessa laughed cruelly from the dirt, "the protection died with him. Richard tried to keep paying the trust, but my mother found out. She intercepted the money. She kept you poor."

Vanessa looked at me with pure hatred.

"You aren't just a half-sister, Margaret. As the legitimate daughter of Dante’s second marriage, you have a direct claim to the Moretti empire. And Luca knows it."

She looked at Luca, trying to plant a final seed of poison.

"Are you going to let a maid take half your throne, Luca?"

Luca didn't look at Vanessa. He looked at me.

Then, he did something that silenced everyone.

He walked over to my mother, gently took the ruby bracelet from her trembling hands, and turned to me.

He unclasped the heavy gold jewelry.

"Give me your wrist, Margaret," Luca said quietly.

I hesitated, overwhelmed. "Luca, I don't want an empire. I just want my mother to be safe."

"You are a Moretti," Luca said, his voice filled with fierce, unshakeable pride. "You don't have to choose between power and family. You get both."

He fastened the ruby bracelet around my wrist. It was heavy, warm, and perfect.

"Welcome home, sister," Luca whispered.

He turned back to Vanessa. The warmth vanished, replaced by absolute ice.

"Take her to the warehouse," Luca ordered his men. "And call the Commission. Tell them I have a rat for them."

Vanessa screamed as the guards hauled her to her feet, dragging her toward the black SUVs parked on the street above.

"You can't do this!" Vanessa shrieked. "My mother will burn Chicago to the ground! You haven't seen the last of us!"

As they shoved her into the car, a small, silver object fell from her pocket and landed in the dirt.

I walked over and picked it up.

It was a train ticket.

But it wasn't a ticket for Vanessa.

It was a ticket purchased for tomorrow morning. Destination: Montreal.

And the name printed on the boarding pass was Evelyn Ellis.

I frowned, showing it to Luca. "Why did she buy a train ticket for my mother?"

Luca stared at the ticket. His eyes widened.

"She wasn't going to kill your mother tonight," Luca realized, his voice dropping into a horrified whisper. "She was going to kidnap her and send her out of the country."

"Why?" I asked.

Before Luca could answer, his cell phone rang.

It was Daniel.

"Boss," Daniel’s voice crackled over the speaker. "I just tossed Vanessa’s apartment. I found something hidden in the floorboards."

"What is it?" Luca demanded.

"It's a ledger," Daniel said. "But it's not a financial ledger. It's medical records."

Daniel paused, taking a shaky breath.

"Boss... Dante Moretti didn't die in an ambush ten years ago. He was poisoned over six months. And the doctor who signed the autopsy report... works for Vanessa’s mother."
