Chapter 10 - THE SECRET IN THE VAULT

The penthouse went dead silent.

"An arranged marriage contract?" I whispered, my cheeks flushing hot.

Luca took the document from Daniel. He scanned the heavy parchment, his dark eyes widening slightly.

"This is signed by my father and Richard, dated twenty-four years ago," Luca said, his voice hushed. "When Margaret was a baby. They didn't just hide her to protect her. They betrothed us to officially unite the Moretti and Bellini syndicates when we came of age."

My heart hammered against my ribs.

I had spent nine months scrubbing this man's floors. I had watched him plan a wedding to the woman who was torturing me. And all along, I was the bride he was meant to marry.

"Vanessa knew," I realized, the final piece of the puzzle sliding into place. "That's why she was so desperate to force the marriage before I turned twenty-five. If the Commission found out I was the true betrothed, her claim would vanish."

Luca looked at me. The tension between us, forged in blood and survival over the last twelve hours, suddenly shifted into something deeper. Something dangerous.

"The Commission is old-fashioned," Luca said softly. "They stripped Claudia of her power, but they abhor a vacuum. They will want the Bellini seat filled immediately."

"By me," I said.

"By you," Luca nodded. "But a twenty-five-year-old unmarried woman with no experience running a syndicate... they will challenge you. They will try to install a puppet."

Evelyn stood up, her maternal instincts flaring. "No. My daughter is not becoming a mob boss."

"She doesn't have to," Luca said, stepping closer to me. His physical presence was overwhelming. "If we honor the contract... if we marry... the families merge. The Commission cannot touch her. I will handle the syndicates. You can run the legitimate businesses. The charities. The hospitals."

He wasn't proposing out of romance. He was offering a shield. An impenetrable fortress of protection.

But as I looked into his eyes, I saw something else. A flicker of genuine admiration. A spark of heat that hadn't been there when he looked at Vanessa.

"Are you asking me to marry you, Luca?" I asked, my voice barely a whisper.

Luca didn't flinch. "I am asking you to survive, Margaret. And I am promising to protect you with my life."

I looked at my mother. She looked terrified, but she understood the reality of our world now. There was no walking away.

"Okay," I said, lifting my chin. "We do it."

For the next three weeks, our lives transformed entirely.

I moved into the master guest suite of the Moretti mansion. My mother was given a beautiful, secure cottage on the estate grounds with a garden she had always dreamed of.

The staff who had once ordered me around now bowed their heads when I walked past. I wasn't Maggie the maid anymore. I was Margaret Moretti-Bellini.

Luca and I spent hours in his study every night, transitioning the illegal assets into legitimate holdings. He was brilliant, ruthless in business, but surprisingly gentle with me. We drank scotch, laughed at the absurdity of our situation, and slowly, quietly, began to fall for each other.

It wasn't forced. It was the natural gravity of two people who had seen the worst of the world and found peace in each other.

Three days before our wedding, I was in the library, looking for a book on corporate law.

I reached for a heavy encyclopedia on the top shelf. As I pulled it down, a small, hidden wall panel behind the books clicked open.

A secret vault.

Curiosity getting the better of me, I reached inside.

There was no money. No guns.

Just a small stack of letters tied with a ribbon.

I untied the ribbon and opened the first letter.

It was dated three years ago.

My dearest Evelyn,

I have finally located you and Maggie. Claudia’s men are watching, so I cannot approach. But I have found a way to bring Maggie into the fold safely. I have arranged for her to be hired at the Moretti estate. Luca is a good man. He will see her true worth. He will protect her when the time comes.

Love, Richard.

My breath hitched.

Richard hadn't stumbled into the mansion by accident that night. He had orchestrated my employment. He had placed me exactly where I needed to be to claim my birthright.

But as I read the second letter, my blood ran cold.

It wasn't written by Richard. It was a reply.

Richard,

I have reviewed the girl's file. She is strong. I will hire her. But Vanessa must believe it was her idea. Let Claudia think she is winning. When the time is right, I will expose the fraud and honor my father's contract. Keep Evelyn safe until I send the signal.

— Luca.

I dropped the letter. It fluttered to the floor like a dead leaf.

Luca knew.

He had known for nine months.

He had watched Vanessa humiliate me. He had watched me scrub the floors on my hands and knees. He had let me believe I was worthless, all to play a long game of chess against Claudia.

Tears of absolute betrayal stung my eyes.

Suddenly, the library door opened.

Luca walked in, smiling, holding a cup of coffee.

"Margaret, I found the caterer for the—"

He stopped.

He saw the open vault. He saw the letters on the floor.

His smile vanished instantly.

"Margaret," Luca whispered, dropping the coffee cup. It shattered on the hardwood.

"You knew," I choked out, stepping backward as he stepped forward. "You lied to me."

Before Luca could explain, a massive explosion rocked the front gates of the mansion.

The windows of the library shattered inward, showering us in broken glass.

The alarms screamed.

Daniel burst over the radio, his voice frantic.
