Chapter 12 - THE NEW FOUNDATION

The flashing lights of the police cars painted my aunt’s driveway red and blue as she was led away in handcuffs.

I stood on the manicured lawn, the cold night air biting at my cheeks. For twenty years, I had believed I was a burden, a mistake left behind by a mother who couldn't care for me. Now, the truth was out. Elias was a monster, and my aunt was a thief, but I was finally free of their shadows.

Adrian handed me a cup of coffee from a thermos in his car. “How does it feel?”

“Overwhelming,” I admitted, wrapping my hands around the warm cup. “But... lighter. Like I can finally breathe.”

Three months later, the Chicago snow melted, giving way to a bright, vibrant spring.

We didn't rebuild the bakery on Halsted Street. Instead, with the funds recovered from my stolen trust and the DeLuca family’s restored wealth, Adrian and I purchased a massive, sunlit building in the heart of downtown.

We called it Rosa’s.

Opening day was a triumph. The line stretched around the block. Inside, the smell of fresh bread and warm vanilla filled the air.

Rosa sat at a large corner table, surrounded by Lily and Leo. She looked vibrant, strong, and completely at peace. She didn't need her blue index cards anymore. Her speech wasn't perfect, but it was hers, and every word was spoken with pride.

I stood behind the counter, wiping my hands on a clean apron. I wasn't just a housekeeper anymore. I was a partner.

Adrian walked up behind me, wrapping an arm around my waist. He kissed the top of my head as we watched his mother laugh with her grandchildren.

“We did it,” he murmured.

I smiled, leaning into his warmth. “Yes, we did.”

The secrets were buried. The villains were gone. And for the first time in my life, I wasn't just working for a family. I was part of one.
