Chapter 9 - THE TRUE INHERITANCE

The flashing police lights cast a warm glow over Rosa’s face as she handed the envelope to Adrian.

Arthur screamed in frustration from the back of the squad car as it drove away. The nightmare was over.

A week later, we stood in the grand foyer of the DeLuca mansion. The oppressive, cold atmosphere Celeste had brought to the house was completely gone.

Elias and Arthur were facing federal charges for fraud and kidnapping. Celeste had been entirely disinherited and was facing her own legal battles for elder abuse and forgery.

Adrian knelt in front of his mother, placing the recovered bakery deed and the true partnership agreement in her lap. With Elias’s assets legally seized to repay his debts, the DeLuca family was now the primary shareholder of the Romano development empire.

“It’s all yours, Mama,” Adrian said gently. “The estate, the company, everything. You are in control.”

Rosa smiled, a genuine, radiant smile that erased years from her face. She looked at Lily and Leo, who were playing happily on the rug, finally feeling safe in their own home.

Then, Rosa looked at me. She picked up a blue index card from her lap and handed it to me.

On it, she had written perfectly: Family.

“Thank you, Claire,” Adrian said, standing up. “You saved my children. You saved my mother’s dignity. You will always have a place in this house, and we are setting up a trust for your sister’s education.”

I felt tears well up in my eyes. For the first time in my life, I didn't have to worry about surviving. We were safe.

But as I packed up Celeste’s remaining things in the guest room, I found a small leather journal tucked beneath the mattress.

I opened it, and a single photograph fell out.
