Chapter 12 - The Wedding Bracelet and a New Beginning

The ocean breeze was warm, carrying the scent of salt and blooming bougainvillea.
Six months later.
Dominic stood on the wooden deck of a beautiful, sprawling beach house on the coast of South Carolina.
He wore a simple white linen shirt, the sleeves rolled up to reveal his tattooed forearms. There were no armed guards patrolling the perimeter. No armored SUVs in the driveway. No bulletproof vests hanging in the closet.
He had walked away from the mafia. He had traded an empire of blood for a life of peace.
And he had never been happier.
The screen door squeaked open.
Emily stepped out onto the deck. She wore a flowing white sundress, her bare feet padding softly against the warm wood. She looked radiant, her skin glowing under the southern sun.
Dominic turned around and smiled. Just looking at her made his chest ache with a profound, overwhelming love.
Emily walked up to him and wrapped her arms around his waist, resting her head against his chest. Dominic held her tight, kissing the top of her head.
“Isabella is finally asleep,” Emily laughed softly. “She spent three hours building that sandcastle with Dad. They’re both exhausted.”
“Arthur needs the rest,” Dominic smiled. “He’s keeping up with a seven-year-old. That’s hard work.”
Emily pulled back slightly, looking up into Dominic’s dark, peaceful eyes.
“Do you ever miss it?” she asked quietly. “Chicago? The power?”
Dominic didn't hesitate. He shook his head.
“I spent my entire life trying to control the world so I wouldn't lose anyone else,” Dominic said. “But power didn't protect Clara. It didn't protect my father. The only thing that protects a family is love.”
He reached out and gently traced the line of her jaw.
“You gave me a reason to stop fighting, Emily. You gave me a life.”
Emily’s eyes filled with happy tears. She leaned up and pressed her lips softly against his. It was a sweet, lingering kiss, filled with promises of a future they both finally believed in.
When they pulled away, Dominic reached into his pocket.
“There’s something I want to give you,” Dominic said, his voice turning surprisingly nervous.
He pulled out a small, worn velvet box.
Emily’s breath caught in her throat.
Dominic opened the box. Inside rested a delicate, breathtakingly beautiful diamond and sapphire bracelet.
“This was my mother’s wedding bracelet,” Dominic said softly. “My father gave it to her the day they were married. When she died, it went into the vault. It was supposed to go to Clara.”
He took the bracelet out of the box and gently clasped it around Emily’s wrist. The sapphires caught the sunlight, sparkling brilliantly against her skin.
“It belongs to you now,” Dominic said, looking deeply into her green eyes. “Because you are the heart of this family, Emily. You saved Isabella. You saved me.”
He took a step back, holding both of her hands.
“I don't have an empire to offer you anymore,” Dominic said, his voice thick with emotion. “I just have me. But if you’ll have me, I want to spend the rest of my life making sure you never have to be afraid again. Will you marry me, Emily?”
Tears spilled over Emily’s eyelashes, but a massive, beautiful smile broke across her face.
She threw her arms around his neck, holding him tighter than she ever had before.
“Yes,” Emily sobbed happily. “Yes, Dominic. Absolutely yes.”
Dominic spun her around on the wooden deck, his deep laughter echoing across the empty beach.
Suddenly, the screen door flew open again.
Isabella came running out, rubbing her sleepy eyes, dragging her stuffed rabbit behind her.
“Daddy? Emily? Why are we yelling?” the little girl mumbled.
Dominic set Emily down and dropped to one knee, opening his arms.
Isabella ran into them, giggling as her father peppered her face with kisses.
“We were just celebrating, sweetheart,” Dominic smiled, looking up at Emily.
Isabella noticed the sparkling bracelet on Emily’s wrist. Her eyes went wide.
“Oooh, pretty!” Isabella gasped. She looked at Emily. “Does this mean you’re going to be my real mommy now?”
Emily knelt down next to Dominic. She gently brushed the hair from Isabella’s forehead, her heart completely full.
“If that’s okay with you, sweetie,” Emily whispered.
Isabella didn't answer with words. She threw her little arms around Emily’s neck, hugging her fiercely.
“I love you, Mommy,” Isabella whispered into her ear.
Emily closed her eyes, tears of absolute joy slipping down her cheeks. She wrapped one arm around Isabella, and the other around Dominic.
The dark shadows of Chicago, the cruelty of Vanessa, the betrayals of the past—they were all a lifetime away.
