Chapter 9 - The Safest Place in the World

The armored SUV tore through the front gates of the Moretti estate. The rain had finally stopped, leaving the massive mansion looking like a dark fortress against the grey pre-dawn sky.

Emily didn't wait for the vehicle to stop completely. She threw the door open and sprinted up the marble steps, gripping the heavy pistol in her trembling hands. The loyal guard, Rossi, was right behind her with an assault rifle.

They burst through the heavy oak doors.

The grand foyer was empty. The silence was suffocating.

“Check the East Wing,” Emily whispered to Rossi. “I’ll check the private quarters upstairs.”

Rossi nodded and vanished into the shadows.

Emily crept up the grand staircase, her bare feet silent on the plush carpet. She had kicked off her sneakers; she needed to be completely noiseless.

She reached the top landing and moved down the hallway toward Dominic’s private living room.

The door was slightly ajar.

Emily peered inside.

Vanessa was sitting elegantly on a velvet sofa, sipping a glass of wine. Standing behind her was Julian, his face heavily bandaged from Dominic’s punch, holding a suppressed pistol.

And sitting on the floor, coloring with crayons, was Isabella. The little girl looked perfectly calm, unaware of the danger, happily drawing a picture of a house.

“He’s late,” Julian muttered, pacing nervously. “If Dominic gave that card to the Feds, we’re dead.”

“He wouldn't risk it,” Vanessa sneered. “He loves the brat too much.”

Emily felt a surge of rage so pure it drowned out all her fear. She pushed the door open completely and stepped into the room, raising the pistol directly at Vanessa’s chest.

“Step away from her,” Emily ordered, her voice surprisingly steady.

Vanessa jumped, spilling wine on her expensive dress. Julian whipped his gun toward Emily.

“Well, well,” Julian laughed nervously. “The little maid wants to play hero. Drop the gun, Emily, before I put a hole in you.”

Emily didn't lower the weapon. She kept her eyes locked on Julian.

“Isabella,” Emily said calmly. “I want you to stand up, leave your crayons, and walk over to me.”

Isabella looked up. When she saw Emily holding a gun, the little girl’s eyes widened in fear.

“Emily?” Isabella whimpered.

“Don't move, kid,” Julian snapped.

“Walk to me, sweetie,” Emily repeated firmly.

Isabella scrambled to her feet and ran toward Emily, wrapping her little arms around Emily’s legs. Emily kept her gun raised, shielding the child with her own body.

“You’re pathetic,” Vanessa spat, standing up. “You think holding a gun makes you brave? Julian, shoot her!”

Julian raised his pistol, aiming at Emily’s head.

But before he could pull the trigger, the massive glass windows of the living room shattered inward.

Stun grenades exploded into the room with blinding flashes of light and deafening bangs.

Julian screamed, dropping his gun and covering his eyes. Vanessa fell to the floor, shrieking.

Emily instinctively spun around, shielding Isabella beneath her body as glass rained down.

Within seconds, heavily armed FBI tactical agents swarmed into the room through the broken windows and the hallway door.

And walking right behind them, completely unharmed and radiating absolute authority, was Dominic Moretti.

Dominic hadn't been in the FBI building when Vanessa called. He had been outside, coordinating the raid with the federal agents. He knew Marcus had given them the codes. He had anticipated the trap.

“Secure them,” the lead FBI agent ordered.

Agents yanked Julian and Vanessa to their feet, snapping heavy steel handcuffs onto their wrists.

Vanessa struggled wildly, her perfect hair ruined, her face twisted in pure humiliation.

“You can’t do this!” Vanessa screamed as they dragged her toward the door. “I am a Carlisle! We own this city!”

Dominic stepped in front of her. He looked down at the woman who had tried to destroy his family.

“You own nothing,” Dominic said coldly. “The memory card is in federal custody. Your father is already in handcuffs. Your accounts are frozen. You are going to spend the rest of your life in a concrete cell.”

Vanessa sobbed, utterly broken, as the agents dragged her and Julian out of the mansion.

The nightmare was over. The Carlisles were finished.

Dominic turned and immediately dropped to his knees amid the broken glass.

Emily was sitting on the floor, holding Isabella tightly against her chest. The little girl was crying softly, burying her face in Emily’s neck.

“Daddy!” Isabella sobbed when she saw him.

Dominic wrapped his massive arms around both of them, pulling them into a fierce, desperate hug. He buried his face in Emily’s hair, breathing in the scent of her.

“I’ve got you,” Dominic whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. “You’re safe. You’re both safe.”

Isabella pulled back slightly and looked at Emily.

“You came back for me,” the little girl said, wiping her eyes.

Emily smiled through her tears, brushing the hair from Isabella’s forehead. “I will always come back for you, sweetie. Always.”

Dominic looked at Emily. He saw the strength, the loyalty, and the pure, unconditional love in her green eyes. She wasn't just Clara’s daughter. She was the woman who had risked everything to save his child.

“Thank you,” Dominic whispered, gently touching Emily’s cheek. “You gave me my family back.”

Emily leaned into his touch, finally letting go of the fear she had carried her entire life.

She wasn't a maid anymore. She was home.
