Chapter 6 - THE SECRET INSIDE THE LOCKET

The harsh floodlight of the warehouse seemed to flicker as the words left Marcus’s mouth.

See why your father ordered the hit.

My entire body went numb. I stared at the delicate gold locket resting in the dirt on the concrete floor. It was the same locket my mother wore every single day. The one the police said was lost in the wreckage of the hit-and-run.

Luca didn’t take his eyes off Marcus’s gun, but he slowly crouched down and picked up the small wooden box. He retrieved the locket, his large hands dwarfing the fragile gold chain.

“Open it,” Marcus taunted, a malicious gleam in his eye. “Let the little maid see exactly what her mother was hiding.”

Luca hesitated. He looked back at me, his dark eyes filled with a protective dread. He didn’t want to open it. He wanted to shield me from whatever poison his father had left behind.

“Open it, Luca,” I whispered, my voice trembling but firm. “I need to know.”

Luca took a deep breath. He pressed the tiny clasp on the side of the locket.

The gold casing popped open.

Inside, there was a tiny, folded piece of paper. Not a photograph. A document, shrunk down to fit inside the jewelry.

Luca carefully unfolded the paper. He read it in silence.

As his eyes scanned the tiny text, the color drained entirely from his face. The fierce, untouchable mafia boss looked like he had just been struck by lightning.

“My God,” Luca breathed, looking up at me with absolute, horrifying disbelief.

“What does it say?” I cried, taking a step forward.

Vanessa laughed cruelly, linking her arm through Marcus’s free arm.

“Tell her, Luca!” Vanessa mocked. “Tell her why Antonio Moretti had to silence a poor, innocent woman!”

Luca’s jaw clenched so hard I thought his teeth would crack. He handed the tiny piece of paper to me.

My hands shook violently as I took it. I squinted in the dim light, reading the tiny, official print.

It was a birth certificate.

But it wasn’t mine. And it wasn’t Lily’s.

It was a birth certificate for a baby boy named Leo Moretti.

The parents listed on the document were Antonio Moretti… and my mother.

The warehouse spun violently around me. My knees gave out, and I collapsed onto the cold concrete.

“No,” I sobbed, shaking my head frantically. “No, that’s impossible. My mother was married to my father. She loved him! She wouldn’t have an affair with a mob boss!”

“She didn’t have an affair, sweetheart,” Marcus sneered, taking a step closer, his gun still trained on Luca. “Your father worked as an accountant for the Moretti syndicate. He owed Antonio a massive debt. A gambling debt he couldn’t pay.”

I felt physically sick. My father had been an accountant, but I never knew he worked for the mafia.

“Antonio didn’t want money,” Marcus continued, his voice dripping with twisted satisfaction. “He wanted an heir. Luca’s mother couldn’t have any more children after Luca. So Antonio took your mother as payment for the debt.”

Tears blinded me. I couldn’t breathe. The perfect, loving parents I had mourned for ten years were a facade, hiding a nightmare of blackmail and abuse.

“Your mother got pregnant,” Vanessa chimed in, smiling viciously. “She gave birth to a baby boy. A true Moretti heir. But she couldn’t bear to give him to a monster like Antonio. So she ran. She hid the baby, and she threatened to go to the police with evidence of Antonio’s racketeering if he ever came looking for the child.”

Luca stepped in front of me, shielding me from their cruel words.

“And my father ordered the hit to silence her,” Luca realized, his voice a low, dangerous rumble.

“Exactly,” Marcus smiled. “Antonio ordered me to run her off the road. And I did. I took the locket as proof of the kill. But we never found the boy. Your mother hid him too well.”

“Until three weeks ago,” Vanessa added triumphantly. “When I found the adoption papers hidden in your library, Luca. I found the boy.”

My heart stopped completely.

The boy. Leo.

“Leo is your half-brother, Luca,” Marcus announced, enjoying the absolute devastation on Luca’s face. “The legitimate heir to the Moretti empire. And he’s sitting in a foster home right now, waiting for Vanessa and me to come pick him up and claim the throne.”

I gasped, looking at Lily, who was sobbing silently beside me.

“You don’t have Leo,” I choked out, desperation clawing at my throat.

“We have the paperwork, Hannah,” Vanessa smirked. “We filed the claim yesterday. Tomorrow morning, a judge will hand the boy over to me as his legal guardian. I will control the entire Moretti fortune until he turns eighteen.”

“You’ll have to kill me first,” Luca snarled, raising his empty hands into fists, his body tensing to lunge at Marcus despite the gun.

“That’s the plan, boss,” Marcus laughed, pulling back the hammer on his pistol. “Goodbye, Luca.”

Marcus leveled the gun at Luca’s head.

I didn’t think. I couldn’t let the man I loved die to protect a fortune that was built on my mother’s suffering.

I scrambled to my feet, grabbing the broken, rusted metal pipe lying near the concrete pillar.

But before I could swing it, the heavy metal doors of the warehouse blew open with a deafening crash.

Blinding tactical lights flooded the space. Sirens wailed outside, drowning out the rain.

“FBI! DROP your weapons!” a voice boomed through a megaphone.

Dozens of heavily armed federal agents poured into the warehouse, laser sights dancing across Marcus and Vanessa’s chests.

Marcus froze, his eyes wide in sheer panic. He looked at the swarm of agents, realizing he was entirely outgunned.

Slowly, Marcus lowered his pistol, dropping it onto the concrete. He raised his hands in surrender.

Vanessa shrieked, backing away. “No! This wasn’t supposed to happen! I have the paperwork!”

Two agents tackled Marcus to the ground, slapping handcuffs on his wrists. Another agent grabbed Vanessa, pinning her against the rusted wall.

Luca didn’t look at the agents. He didn’t look at the traitors being hauled away.

He turned around and walked straight to me.

He pulled me into a fierce, desperate embrace, burying his face in my hair, trembling with the sheer adrenaline of survival.

“It’s over,” Luca whispered fiercely against my ear. “They’re gone. It’s over.”

I held him tight, sobbing into his ruined suit. The nightmare was finally ending.

But as I looked over Luca’s shoulder, watching the FBI agents secure the warehouse, I noticed a man in a dark suit standing near the entrance, watching us intently.

He wasn’t wearing an FBI windbreaker. He wasn’t one of Luca’s men.

He was holding a small, black umbrella, and smoking a thin cigar.

He caught my eye, smiled a polite, chilling smile, and tipped an imaginary hat to me before turning and disappearing into the rainy night.

And pinned to the lapel of his dark suit was a tiny, silver pin in the shape of a hummingbird.

The exact same hummingbird that was on my mother’s broken bracelet.
