Chapter 7 - THE MAN WITH THE HUMMINGBIRD PIN

The flashing blue and red lights of the FBI vehicles painted the warehouse walls in frantic strokes, but I couldn't tear my eyes away from the dark doorway where the man had vanished.
A silver hummingbird pin.
My mother’s favorite symbol. The one she had custom-made for the bracelet Marcus had ripped from my wrist.
“Hannah?”
Luca’s gentle voice pulled me back. He pulled away slightly, his large hands cupping my face. His thumbs wiped the mix of rain and tears from my cheeks.
“Are you okay?” he asked, his dark eyes searching mine with a terrifying intensity.
I blinked, forcing myself to focus on the man standing in front of me. The mafia boss who had just surrendered his empire to federal agents to save my life.
“Who was that man?” I whispered, my voice trembling.
Luca frowned, looking over his shoulder toward the empty doorway. “Which man?”
“There was a man standing by the door,” I stammered, pointing a shaking finger. “He wasn't FBI. He was wearing a dark suit. And he had a silver hummingbird pin on his lapel.”
Luca’s body went completely rigid. The warmth drained from his hands, leaving them ice cold against my skin.
“A hummingbird?” Luca repeated, the words sounding hollow, as if the air had been sucked from his lungs.
“Yes. He smiled at me and then just walked away into the rain.”
Luca didn’t say anything. He dropped his hands and turned to Daniel, who was currently speaking with the lead FBI agent.
“Daniel!” Luca roared, his voice cracking with a sudden, absolute panic I had never heard from him before.
Daniel jogged over, looking concerned. “Boss? The feds are securing the perimeter. Marcus and Vanessa are in custody.”
“Forget Marcus,” Luca snapped, grabbing his security chief by the collar. “Did you see a man in a dark suit by the door? Smoking a cigar?”
Daniel frowned, confused. “No, boss. Only feds came through that door.”
Luca cursed violently in Italian, shoving Daniel away. He ran his hands through his wet hair, pacing like a caged animal.
“Luca, what is it?” I pleaded, stepping toward him. “Who is he?”
Luca stopped pacing. He looked at me, an expression of profound, agonizing dread settling over his handsome features.
“When my father took over the syndicate thirty years ago,” Luca began, his voice barely above a whisper, “he didn’t do it alone. He had a partner. A silent partner who handled the international accounts. A man who was even more ruthless than Antonio Moretti.”
I swallowed hard. “Who?”
“His name is Elias Thorne,” Luca said. “He was my father’s best friend. He’s the man who originally hired your father to launder money for the syndicate.”
The revelation hit me like a physical blow.
“And his personal crest,” Luca continued, his eyes locked on mine, “the symbol he left on every contract he signed… was a silver hummingbird.”
My mother hadn’t chosen the hummingbird because she liked birds. She had chosen it to mark her silent allegiance. Or perhaps, as a desperate plea for protection from the most dangerous man in the city.
“If Elias Thorne is here,” Luca said, looking around the warehouse as if the shadows themselves were listening, “it means he isn’t done with our family. And he isn’t done with you.”
Before I could process the terror, the lead FBI agent walked over to us. He was a tall, severe-looking man in a damp trench coat.
“Mr. Moretti,” the agent said, his tone clipped and professional. “We have Marcus and Vanessa in custody. As agreed in our prior arrangement, you have full immunity in exchange for turning over the syndicate’s ledgers today.”
I stared at Luca in shock. “You made a deal with the FBI?”
Luca looked down at me, a soft, sad smile touching his lips.
“I told you, Hannah,” Luca murmured. “I wanted out. The moment I found out my father ordered the hit on your mother, I knew I couldn’t sit on that throne. I contacted the Bureau last week. I gave them everything they needed to dismantle the family.”
He had burned down his entire empire. He had traded his billions, his power, and his legacy, all to ensure I would be safe.
“You gave up everything,” I breathed, tears welling in my eyes.
“I gave up a nightmare,” Luca corrected, gently taking my hand. “To wake up in a life that actually matters.”
The FBI agent cleared his throat, interrupting the moment.
“There is one complication, Mr. Moretti,” the agent said grimly.
Luca’s smile vanished. “What complication?”
“We raided the foster home to secure the boy, Leo, as you requested,” the agent reported, looking uncomfortable. “But we were too late.”
My heart stopped completely. “Too late?”
“The boy isn’t there, ma’am,” the agent said to me. “The foster parents said a man in a dark suit came with official court documents an hour ago. The paperwork checked out. He legally took custody of the child.”
“Elias Thorne,” Luca growled, his hands balling into fists.
“He took my brother,” I sobbed, the sheer panic overwhelming my exhaustion. I turned to Luca, grabbing his lapels. “Luca, he has Leo! We have to find him!”
“We will,” Luca swore fiercely, pulling me into his chest. “I promise you, on my life, we will find him.”
Luca turned back to the FBI agent. “Where is the paperwork Elias used? Where did he file it?”
The agent pulled a tablet from his coat and tapped the screen. “The judge who signed the emergency custody order is Honorable Judge Harrison. The address listed for the new guardian is a private estate in upstate New York.”
“I know that estate,” Luca said, his eyes narrowing. “It’s Elias’s fortress. It’s heavily fortified.”
“The Bureau cannot sanction a raid on that property without hard evidence of a crime,” the agent warned. “Elias Thorne has too many politicians in his pocket. If you go in there, Moretti, you’re on your own.”
Luca didn’t hesitate. He looked at Daniel, who was already reloading his weapon.
“Gather the men who are still loyal,” Luca ordered his security chief. “We leave in ten minutes.”
Luca turned back to me. “Hannah, you need to go with the FBI. They will keep you and Lily safe in a secure location until I bring Leo back.”
“No,” I said, my voice ringing with absolute certainty.
I stepped away from him, wiping the tears from my face. I wasn’t a terrified maid anymore. I was a sister fighting for her family.
“I’m coming with you,” I demanded.
“Hannah, it’s a suicide mission,” Luca pleaded, grabbing my hands. “Elias has an army up there. I can’t protect you in a firefight.”
“He’s my brother, Luca,” I said, looking him dead in the eye. “And Elias Thorne is the man who ruined my parents' lives. I’m not hiding in a safe house while you fight my battles.”
Luca stared at me. He saw the fierce, unbreakable resolve in my eyes. The same stubbornness that had made me refuse Vanessa’s fake resignation letter a lifetime ago.
Slowly, a deep, respectful smile broke through the tension on his face.
“Okay,” Luca whispered, kissing my forehead. “We go together.”
Two hours later, we were in a heavily armored black SUV, speeding down the dark, rain-slicked highway toward upstate New York.
I sat in the passenger seat, gripping a heavy metal flashlight in my lap. Luca was driving, his face illuminated by the dashboard lights, looking like a terrifying avenging angel.
As we approached the towering iron gates of Elias Thorne’s estate, my phone buzzed in my pocket.
I pulled it out.
It was a text message from an unknown number.
I opened it, and the blood drained completely from my face.
It was a picture of Leo, sitting in a lavish, antique leather chair. But he wasn’t tied up. He wasn’t crying.
He was smiling, holding a silver pocket watch.
And standing behind him, with his hand resting affectionately on my brother’s shoulder, was my father.
My father. The man who had supposedly died in the hit-and-run ten years ago.
And beneath the photograph was a single, typed message:
May you like
Welcome home, Hannah. Dad has been waiting for you.
