Chapter 2 - The Silver-Haired Stranger’s Confession

The crystal chandeliers above the dining table suddenly felt blindingly bright.
Thirty-two guests held their collective breath.
Luca Moretti didn't yell. He didn't raise a hand.
He simply walked around the long mahogany table, his footsteps echoing against the marble floor, until he reached the silver-haired man.
The man was sweating profusely. His hands trembled as he gripped his wineglass.
“Stand up,” Luca said.
His voice was terrifyingly calm.
The man swallowed hard and stood. He was tall, but next to Luca, he looked like a frightened child.
“My son just said you demanded payment to take him away,” Luca murmured, his dark eyes locking onto the stranger. “Explain yourself.”
Vanessa hurried forward, her red silk dress rustling frantically.
“Luca, please! This is Arthur Pendelton. He’s an investor from New York. Noah is just telling stories to get attention—”
“If you speak again,” Luca said without looking at her, “I will have my guards escort you out of this house.”
Vanessa’s mouth snapped shut.
Luca returned his focus to the trembling man.
“Who are you?”
The man wiped his forehead with a linen napkin.
“Mr. Moretti, I… I didn’t mean any disrespect. I was hired.”
A cold silence dropped over the room.
I instinctively pulled Noah closer to my side. The little boy was shaking, his small fingers gripping my apron.
“Hired by whom?” Luca asked.
The man’s eyes darted toward Vanessa.
She went completely pale.
“She approached me three weeks ago,” the man stammered, pulling a thick envelope from his suit jacket. “She paid me fifty thousand dollars to attend this dinner. I’m an actor. I perform in local theater.”
Guests began whispering furiously.
Luca didn't flinch. He took the envelope from the man's shaking hands.
Inside were stacks of hundred-dollar bills.
And a script.
“She told me to wait until dessert,” the actor confessed, his voice cracking. “I was supposed to stand up, claim I was the boy’s biological father, and demand a million dollars to walk away.”
Luca stared at the typed script.
“Why?”
“She said if you saw how greedy and unstable the boy’s real family was, you’d realize adopting him was a mistake. She wanted you to annul the adoption to protect your assets.”
I felt sick to my stomach.
Vanessa hadn't just tried to separate a father and son.
She had orchestrated a public spectacle to break a nine-year-old boy’s heart, just to protect her future wealth.
“Luca, it’s a lie!” Vanessa cried out, tears spilling down her cheeks. “He’s trying to extort us!”
But Luca slowly turned around.
He walked back to where Noah was standing beside me.
He knelt in front of his son, ignoring the ruined engagement dinner, ignoring the wealthy guests.
“Noah,” Luca said gently. “When did she tell you this man was your father?”
Noah wiped his eyes with the back of his sweater sleeve.
“Before dinner,” the boy whispered. “When Rachel was in the kitchen. Miss Vanessa took me into the library. She pointed at him through the window.”
Noah reached into his small pocket.
“She said my real dad didn't want me because I was bad. And she gave me this to prove it.”
Noah opened his little hand.
Resting in his palm was a tarnished silver watch.
My breath hitched.
I recognized that watch.
It had belonged to Noah’s mother. It was the only item in his possession when Luca brought him home from the foster agency two years ago. Luca kept it locked in a safe in his master bedroom.
Luca stared at the watch, his jaw clenching so hard a muscle ticked in his cheek.
Vanessa had broken into his private safe.
“I’m sorry, Daddy,” Noah sobbed. “I tried to be good. I promise.”
Luca pulled Noah into a fierce embrace, burying his face in his son's neck.
“You are perfect,” Luca whispered fiercely. “You hear me? You are my son, and you are perfect.”
When Luca finally stood up, the warmth in his eyes was gone.
He looked at Vanessa with a coldness that made the temperature in the room plummet.
“The wedding is canceled,” Luca said.
Vanessa gasped, stumbling backward. “Luca, no!”
“Pack your things. My men will escort you off the property in ten minutes.”
Vanessa looked around the room, desperate for an ally. But the guests were staring at her with disgust.
Her tears stopped.
Her expression hardened into something ugly and venomous.
“You think you can just throw me out?” Vanessa sneered. “You think the Commission will let you humiliate my family over a street orphan?”
“He is a Moretti,” Luca warned.
“He is a nobody!” Vanessa screamed.
Then, she looked directly at me.
“And you,” she hissed. “You think you’re so safe, Rachel. Protecting the little bastard.”
She reached into her designer purse and pulled out a faded, crumpled photograph.
May you like
She threw it onto the dining table.
“Why don’t you tell Luca where you were the night this boy’s mother died, Rachel?” Vanessa smiled cruelly. “Because according to this, you were in the car that hit her.”
