Chapter 8 - THE HAPPY ENDING AT THE WAREHOUSE

Dante escorted Harper’s mother to the armored Mercedes.

When Harper saw her mother, she threw open the door and sprinted across the pavement.

The two women collapsed into each other’s arms, sobbing uncontrollably.

Dante stood by the car, letting them have their moment. The cold Chicago wind whipped at his coat, but for the first time in seven years, the heavy weight in his chest was gone.

His wife’s killer was dead. Her honor was restored.

And his daughter was finally safe.

Harper pulled away from her mother and looked at Dante.

She walked up to him.

Without a word, she wrapped her arms around his waist and hugged him.

Dante stiffened for a fraction of a second—nobody touched the boss like that—but then he slowly brought his hands up and hugged her back.

“Thank you,” Harper whispered into his coat.

“You saved my daughter tonight, Harper,” Dante said softly. “You saved my family. Your mother will have the best surgeons in the country remove that device tomorrow. And neither of you will ever want for anything again. You have my word.”

They drove back to the mansion.

The police had already arrived. Rocco had handed Caroline over to Dante’s contacts in the precinct. She would spend the rest of her life in a maximum-security cell for kidnapping and extortion, completely cut off from the wealth she craved.

When Dante walked into the study, Sophie was sitting on the sofa.

When she saw Dante and Harper, her face lit up with pure joy.

“Daddy! Miss Harper!”

Sophie ran across the room and jumped into Dante’s arms. He spun her around, laughing.

Sophie reached out and grabbed Harper’s hand, pulling her into the hug.

The little girl looked up at the nanny.

“You promised you wouldn't let the bad lady take me,” Sophie smiled. “You kept your promise.”

Harper wiped a happy tear from her cheek.

“I will always keep my promises to you, Sophie.”

Dante looked at Harper, holding his daughter’s hand.

For years, he had been trying to find a mother for Sophie by looking at society women, business partners, and perfect mannequins like Caroline.

He had been blind.

The mother Sophie needed had been in this house the entire time.
