Chapter 11 - The Mother In The Shadows

I stared at my mother, the phone slipping from my hand and crashing onto the floor.
“Mom?” I whispered, my voice breaking.
She didn’t look like the frail, stroke-survivor woman I had been bathing and feeding for two years.
Her posture was rigid. Her eyes were sharp, cold, and entirely unfamiliar.
“I’m sorry, Claire,” she said.
Her voice didn’t have the weak, slurred drag it had yesterday. It was perfectly clear.
Thomas Vale gasped from the bed.
“Evelyn,” Thomas choked out.
I whipped my head toward Thomas, then back to my mother.
“What did he just call you?” I demanded.
My mother stepped away from the door, keeping the gun trained on Thomas.
“My name isn’t Martha Donovan, Claire,” she said softly. “My name is Evelyn Cross.”
The room spun.
Everything I thought I knew about my life, my childhood, my family, was a lie.
“You’re my mother,” I cried, tears blinding me. “I took care of you! Noah is your grandson!”
“You were a contingency plan, Claire,” Evelyn said, a flicker of regret crossing her cold face. “When Thomas abandoned me thirty years ago, I knew he would eventually come for my daughters. So I faked my death, adopted a stolen identity, and took in a foster child. You.”
I couldn’t breathe.
I wasn’t her daughter. I was a prop. A human shield she had raised to look like a normal family.
“You faked a stroke for two years?!” I screamed.
“It was the only way to ensure you stayed close, and working at St. Catherine’s,” Evelyn said. “I needed an inside woman. I needed you to intercept Vivienne’s drugs before they killed Thomas.”
“Why?” Thomas wheezed. “Why not let Vivienne kill me? You hate me!”
“Because death is too easy for you, Thomas,” Evelyn sneered, stepping closer to the bed. “You ruined my life. You turned my daughters into monsters. Vivienne tried to frame me for Eleanor’s murder. Sarah faked her death to hunt Vivienne. My girls are destroying each other because of you.”
She raised the gun.
“I didn’t want you dead, Thomas. I want you to watch your empire burn. I want you to watch your son lose everything.”
Evelyn reached into her pocket.
She pulled out a small, remote detonator. Exactly like the one Daniel had used at the hospital.
“Marcus didn’t secure the perimeter, Thomas,” Evelyn smiled cruelly. “I secured it. With C-4. The entire foundation of this estate is rigged.”
She looked at me.
“Run, Claire. Take Noah and run. You have three minutes before I bring this house down on Thomas’s head.”
“I’m not leaving without Adrian!” I yelled.
“Adrian is dealing with Sarah’s mercenaries at the front gate,” Evelyn said coldly. “He’s dead already.”
I looked at the woman who had raised me. The monster hiding in plain sight.
I didn’t run for the door.
I ran at her.
I tackled Evelyn to the ground, slamming her wrist against the hard tile floor.
The gun fired, the bullet shattering the ceiling light.
The detonator slid across the floor, stopping near the edge of Thomas’s bed.
Evelyn was strong, but I was thirty-four and fueled by the absolute rage of a mother protecting her child.
I pinned her down, pressing my forearm against her throat.
“You used my son!” I screamed in her face.
Before Evelyn could fight back, the heavy door flew open.
Adrian stood there, covered in soot, breathing heavily, his gun raised.
He saw me pinning Evelyn to the floor. He saw the gun. He saw the detonator.
He didn’t ask questions.
He stepped forward and kicked the detonator across the room, out of reach.
He pulled me off Evelyn, dragging her up by her collar and slamming her against the wall.
“It’s over, Evelyn,” Adrian roared. “Sarah’s men are dead. Vivienne is surrounded by the FBI. You lost.”
Evelyn laughed, a bitter, broken sound.
“I didn’t lose, Adrian,” she smiled, blood trickling from her lip. “Look at your family. Look at your legacy. It’s ashes.”
Adrian stared at her, his jaw set in stone.
“My legacy isn’t built on lies anymore,” Adrian said softly.
He looked at me.
“It’s built on the truth.”
He pulled a pair of heavy zip ties from his tactical vest and bound Evelyn’s hands.

The nightmare was finally, truly over.
