Chapter 10 - THE BLACK SUV AND THE BURNER PHONE

The black SUV idled at the curb.

The exhaust plumed into the cold morning air, thick and white.

The tinted windows revealed absolutely nothing inside.

Nicholas immediately stepped in front of me and Noah.

He slipped his hand inside his jacket, resting it on the concealed weapon I now knew he carried.

“Get back inside the lobby,” Nicholas ordered quietly.

I didn't argue. I grabbed Noah’s arm and pulled him backward through the revolving doors.

The rear passenger window of the SUV slowly rolled down.

I held my breath.

A man in a sharp gray suit leaned forward. He wasn't aiming a weapon. He was holding out a cheap, disposable burner phone.

He tossed it onto the sidewalk.

It clattered against the concrete.

The window rolled back up, and the SUV smoothly accelerated away, blending into the early morning Chicago traffic.

We stood in the lobby, staring at the phone on the pavement.

“Stay here,” Nicholas said.

He walked out the doors, scanning the street, then bent down and picked up the phone.

He brought it back inside.

The screen was lit up.

One unread text message.

Nicholas opened it. He read it in silence, his jaw muscles clenching.

“What does it say?” I asked, my voice shaking.

Nicholas turned the phone so I could see the screen.

Your ex-husband’s debt is now your debt, Mrs. Mercer. You have 48 hours to unfreeze the Cayman account, or we collect the principal from the boy.

My blood turned to ice.

The boy.

Noah.

I instinctively stepped in front of my son, shielding him.

“They can't do this,” I panicked, looking at Nicholas. “David stole the money! He’s the one who owes them!”

“Cartels don't care about corporate titles, Claire,” Nicholas said, his voice grim. “They care about the ledger. David pledged Mercer Logistics as the guarantor for the loan. Since you just legally seized the company, you also seized its liabilities.”

I felt like the floor was dropping out from under me.

I had spent the entire night fighting to win back my dignity and my company, only to discover I had just fought to inherit a death sentence for my son.

“How much is the principal?” Noah asked, his voice cracking but trying to stay brave.

“Four million,” I said, remembering the bank statement.

“Then pay it,” Noah urged. “Mom, just pay them and let them take it. The company is worth a hundred million. Four million is nothing to keep us safe.”

“I can't,” I whispered, tears welling in my eyes.

“Why not?”

Nicholas answered for me.

“Because I froze the Cayman account using my federal SEC credentials an hour ago to stop David from fleeing. It’s locked in a federal investigation now. If Claire tries to wire four million dollars to a known cartel shell company, she’ll be arrested for international money laundering and terrorism financing by noon.”

The trap snapped shut perfectly.

If I paid, I went to federal prison, and Noah lost his mother.

If I didn't pay, the cartel killed my son.

David hadn't just been a coward. He had built a bomb, handed it to me, and run away.

“Where is David right now?” I demanded, a cold fury replacing my panic.

“He’s running,” Nicholas said, pulling out his own secure phone. “He likely knew the transfer failed. He’s probably trying to get to a private airstrip.”

“Find him,” I said.

Nicholas looked at me. “Claire, even if we find David, he doesn't have the money to pay them.”

“I don't care about the money,” I said, my voice dropping to a terrifying, deadly calm. I touched the emerald necklace at my throat. “I want the man who put a price tag on my son’s head.”

Nicholas stared at me.

He saw the same fire in my eyes that his father must have seen in my mother.

Nicholas nodded once. He dialed a number.

“I need a trace on David Mercer’s passport and credit cards. Lock down O’Hare, Midway, and every private tarmac in a fifty-mile radius.”

He hung up.

“My team is on it. Come on. We need to get you two to a secure location.”

We piled back into the town car.

As we drove toward Nicholas’s secure penthouse, I stared out the window.

The sun was beginning to rise over Lake Michigan, painting the sky in bruised shades of purple and gold.

My phone buzzed in my purse.

Not the burner phone. My personal phone.

I pulled it out.

An unknown number.

I hesitated, then answered.

“Hello?”

“Claire.”

It was Madison.

She sounded frantic. The arrogant, composed trophy wife was completely gone, replaced by a terrified girl.

“Madison? How did you get this number?”

“I took it from David’s contacts,” she rushed out, her breath hitching. “Claire, you have to listen to me. I know about the cartel.”

I sat up straight. “How do you know about that?”

“Because David didn't borrow the four million for the company,” Madison sobbed. “He borrowed it for my mother. Eleanor needed liquidity to buy up the secondary debt to take over Mercer Logistics. David borrowed cartel money to fund her hostile takeover.”

I closed my eyes. The corruption was bottomless.

“Why are you calling me, Madison?”

“Because they took him,” she cried.

My eyes snapped open.

“Who took who?”

“The cartel,” Madison whimpered. “David came back to the apartment to pack his bags. They were waiting in the living room. They took him, Claire. And they left a message for you.”

I put the phone on speaker so Nicholas and Noah could hear.

“What’s the message?” I asked coldly.

“They said they know the federal government froze the accounts,” Madison relayed, her voice trembling. “They said money takes too long to clean now. So they want collateral instead.”

“What collateral?” Nicholas demanded from the front seat.

Madison swallowed hard. The sound was audible over the speaker.

“The original stock certificates,” Madison whispered. “They want the paper shares. Fifty-one percent of Mercer Logistics. They want to own the shipping routes legally.”

Silence filled the car.

“If you don't bring the certificates to the railyard at Pier 41 in one hour,” Madison finished, crying openly now, “they are going to send David back to you in pieces. And then they are coming for Noah.”

May you like

The line went dead.
