Chapter 9 - The Birth Certificate In The Nursery

The basement was entirely silent.
The single bare bulb flickered above us.
I stared at the old man in the wheelchair.
My mind refused to process the words. It felt like standing on a train track and watching the headlights rush toward me, unable to move.
“No,” I whispered, taking a step back from the crib. “My name is Natalie Parker. My mother is Sarah Parker.”
Anthony’s chin trembled. He looked at me with an agonizing mix of absolute love and unbearable grief.
“Sarah Parker was your nanny,” Anthony said softly.
The world tilted.
I gripped the edge of the wooden crib to keep from falling.
“What are you talking about?” Luca demanded, stepping between me and his father. “Dad, what are you saying?!”
“Thirty-five years ago, I destroyed Camille’s father’s business,” Anthony explained, his voice hollow. “I took everything he had to build this empire. He swore he would take everything from me.”
Anthony looked at the framed birth certificate on the wall.
“Ten years later, your mother finally had the daughter she always prayed for. We named her Natalia.”
He looked back at me.
“When you were eight months old, Camille’s father broke into this house. He didn't come for money. He came for blood.”
I stopped breathing.
“He had a gun,” Anthony wept. “He had you in his arms. Sarah, your nanny, walked into the nursery. She fought him. She fought like a lion to protect you.”
Tears spilled over Anthony’s cheeks.
“In the chaos, the police arrived. Camille’s father panicked. He grabbed Sarah and you, and he ran. He took you both.”
“And you didn't find them?!” Luca yelled, furious.
“I searched the entire world!” Anthony roared back, slamming his good hand against the armrest. “For years! I spent millions! But Camille’s father was a ghost. He hid you in a rural town in Ohio. He forced Sarah to raise you as her own, to keep you hidden from me.”
I shook my head violently. “No. My mother loves me. She wouldn't keep me from my real family.”
“He threatened her,” Anthony said gently. “He told Sarah that if she ever contacted me, he would kill you, and he would kill her other daughter... Maya.”
My heart stopped.
Maya.
“He used Maya as leverage to keep Sarah silent,” Anthony explained. “Sarah raised you. She protected you. She gave up her entire life to make sure you grew up safe, even if it meant hiding you from the people who created you.”
“Then how do you know who I am?” I choked out, tears streaming down my face.
“Because Camille’s father died three years ago,” Anthony said. “The threat died with him. Sarah finally reached out to me.”
He looked at Luca.
“I didn't tell you, Luca, because the syndicate was unstable. If our enemies knew the lost Moretti heiress had been found, they would have targeted her immediately. I had to keep her close, but hidden.”
Anthony looked back at me.
“I hired you as a maid. I paid Sarah’s bills quietly through dummy corporations. I just wanted you under my roof. I just wanted to see you every day.”
The memories of the last seven months flooded my mind.
Anthony refusing to let anyone but me bring him his meals.
Anthony asking about my day, asking about Maya’s college classes.
Anthony’s fierce, protective anger whenever Camille insulted me.
He wasn't just a kind boss. He was my father.
And Luca...
I looked at Luca.
The man I had secretly harbored feelings for. The man who had just risked his life to save my sister.
He wasn't my employer.
He was my big brother.
Luca stared at me. His dark eyes were wide, taking in my face, tracing the similarities he had never noticed before. The shape of my jaw. The color of my eyes.
“Natalia,” Luca whispered.
He didn't hesitate.
He closed the distance between us and wrapped his massive arms around me.
It wasn't the protective embrace of a boss anymore. It was the desperate, crushing hug of a brother who had just found the piece of his soul he didn't know was missing.
I broke down. I buried my face in his chest, sobbing violently, years of struggle and fear washing away in the safety of my real family’s arms.
“I’ve got you,” Luca cried into my hair. “I’ve got you, little sister. Nobody will ever touch you again.”
Anthony wheeled himself closer, reaching out his good hand.
I pulled away from Luca and dropped to my knees in front of the wheelchair.
I took Anthony’s trembling hand and pressed it to my cheek.
“My beautiful girl,” Anthony wept, stroking my hair. “My brave, beautiful girl. You have your mother’s fire.”
We stayed in that dusty, hidden nursery for a long time. Crying. Healing. Repairing a family that had been broken for twenty-four years.
When we finally walked back upstairs, the police had arrived.
Camille and Daniel were in handcuffs.
Camille looked up as we entered the foyer. She saw Luca holding my hand. She saw the absolute, terrifying unity in our eyes.
She knew she hadn't just failed to steal the money. She had accidentally reunited the very family her father had tried to destroy.
“Take them away,” Luca ordered the police. “Make sure they never see the sun again.”
As the squad cars drove away, Maya ran up to me, still wrapped in her blanket.
“What happened down there?” she asked, looking between me and Luca.
I smiled, wiping my tears.
I pulled Maya into a hug, looking over her shoulder at the two men standing behind me.
May you like
“Maya,” I said softly. “I want you to meet our family.”
