Chapter 10 - THE STUCK PIANO KEY

Three weeks later.

The Moretti estate had transformed. The dark, oppressive atmosphere that had choked the house for sixteen years was gone. The heavy curtains were pulled back, allowing the autumn sunlight to flood the hallways.

Vincent Caruso had been quietly dealt with by the Commission. His loyalists were purged, and Dominic’s absolute authority was cemented.

But the biggest change was in the people who lived there.

Anna was no longer a maid. She lived in the sunlit suite in the east wing, her rightful place as the daughter of the house.

She stood in the music room, wearing a simple but elegant cream dress. She watched as her father—Thomas Ellison—walked slowly across the Persian rug, leaning heavily on a silver-handled cane.

He looked healthier. The stress that had aged him prematurely was gone. Dominic had brought in the best private physicians in the country, and Thomas was recovering his strength every day.

Dominic sat in a leather armchair near the fireplace, watching them with a relaxed, genuine smile.

“You look good, Dad,” Anna said, kissing his cheek.

Thomas smiled, his right hand resting on her shoulder. “I feel like I’ve finally woken up from a very long, very dark dream.”

He looked across the room at the grand piano. It sat gleaming in the sunlight, polished and perfect.

“I never thought I’d see this instrument again,” Thomas murmured, walking slowly toward it.

Dominic stood up and walked over, standing beside Anna.

“You told Anna that some songs aren't meant to be finished,” Dominic said softly. “Was that the truth?”

Thomas ran his good hand along the smooth wood of the piano lid. He looked at Dominic, his eyes filled with a gentle sadness.

“Your mother was a brilliant woman, Dominic,” Thomas said. “She knew Vincent was watching her. She knew she might not survive long enough to expose him.”

He sat down on the piano bench.

“The three notes I taught Anna were a distress signal,” Thomas explained. “But the rest of the song... the rest of the song was a key.”

Anna frowned. “A key to what?”

“To the only thing she truly wanted to leave you,” Thomas said.

He lifted his left hand and placed it over the ivory keys.

“I can't play it alone,” Thomas said, looking at Anna. “My right hand won't cooperate. Will you help me finish the song?”

Anna nodded, sitting on the bench beside him.

Thomas quietly hummed the melody, guiding her fingers. Together, they began to play.

It was a beautiful, haunting piece of music. It started melancholic and slow, but as it progressed, the tempo lifted, transforming into a melody full of hope and desperate love.

The music filled the room, washing away the years of pain and silence.

As they played the final, lingering chord, Thomas leaned forward and pressed down hard on the middle key. The one that had been 'stuck' for sixteen years.

With a soft, mechanical click, a hidden wooden panel beneath the sheet music stand popped open.

Anna gasped, pulling her hands back.

Dominic stepped closer. He reached into the hidden compartment.

Inside was a single, sealed envelope, aged yellow by time.

Written on the front, in his mother’s elegant, looping cursive, were the words:

To my beloved children, Dominic and Anna.

Dominic’s hands trembled as he broke the wax seal. He pulled out the letter and unfolded the crisp paper.

He read it silently, his dark eyes scanning the words. A single tear slipped down his cheek, dropping onto the edge of the paper.

“What does it say?” Anna whispered, terrified of what final secret their mother might have left behind.

Dominic looked up, his expression softer than she had ever seen it.

“It says she loved us,” Dominic whispered. “It says she knew Thomas would protect you, and she knew I would be strong enough to survive Vincent until you found your way back to me.”

He handed the letter to Anna.

At the bottom of the page, beneath her signature, the mother had written one final instruction.

Do not let the darkness of this family consume you. When the truth is found, you will have a choice. Use the key inside this envelope to leave it all behind.

May you like

Anna looked back into the hidden compartment.

Resting in the dust was a small, silver safety deposit box key.
