Chapter 12 - A New Legacy Begins

One year later.

The bells of St. Patrick’s Cathedral rang loud and clear over Fifth Avenue.

The massive wooden doors swung open, and the crowd gathered on the steps erupted into cheers.

Elena Moretti stepped out into the bright spring sunlight, wearing a stunning, simple white silk gown. Her dark hair was pinned up, adorned only by the heavy gold sapphire ring that now sat above a diamond wedding band.

Beside her, looking devastatingly handsome in a black tuxedo, was her husband, Lorenzo.

He held her hand tightly, his eyes scanning the crowd out of pure habit, but there was no tension in his shoulders.

The city was theirs. And the city was peaceful.

Frank stood near the steps, wearing a tailored suit that hid the slight limp from his cane, laughing with Lorenzo’s top lieutenants. He had transitioned from a feared enforcer to a respected elder statesman of the family, spending most of his days building model ships with Leo.

Speaking of Leo, the boy came running down the cathedral steps, wearing a miniature tuxedo, holding a small basket of white rose petals.

"Uncle Enzo! Aunt Elena!" Leo cheered, throwing a handful of petals into the air.

Lorenzo laughed, scooping the boy up with his free arm. "How did you do, ring bearer?"

"I didn't drop them!" Leo announced proudly.

"You did perfect, buddy," Elena smiled, kissing the boy’s cheek.

As they walked down the steps toward the waiting Rolls Royce, Elena caught sight of a woman standing near the edge of the crowd, partially hidden behind a marble pillar.

The woman wore a dark coat, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses.

Elena stopped walking.

Lorenzo noticed her hesitation. He followed her gaze.

His jaw tightened instantly.

It was Carmela.

She hadn't attacked them in a year. The humiliation of her defeat at the compound had stripped her of her remaining allies. She was a ghost in the city she once tried to rule.

Carmela didn't move toward them. She didn't reach for a weapon.

She simply raised a gloved hand, placing it over her heart, and gave a slow, respectful nod to her daughter.

An acknowledgment of defeat. An acknowledgment of the new Queen.

Then, she turned and disappeared into the New York crowd, never to be seen again.

"Do you want me to send men after her?" Lorenzo asked quietly, his protective instincts flaring.

Elena looked at the spot where her mother had been standing.

She felt no fear. No anger. Just a profound sense of closure.

"No," Elena said softly, turning back to her husband and her nephew. "Let her go. She belongs to the past."

Lorenzo relaxed, a proud smile spreading across his face.

He opened the door of the car for her.

"Where to, Mrs. Moretti?" he asked.

Elena slid into the leather seat, pulling Leo in next to her. She looked at the man who had changed her life, the man she had chosen over her own survival.

"Take us home, Mr. Moretti," she said.

The car pulled away from the curb, driving into the bright afternoon sun.

Elena closed her eyes, listening to the sound of Leo laughing and the steady, comforting rhythm of her husband's breathing.

The survival lessons her father taught her were no longer needed.

She didn't need to watch the doors.

May you like

She didn't need to look for danger.

For the first time in her life, Elena knew she was safe. And she knew she always would be.
