THE HAND IN THE DARKNESS / Chapter 8 / 8

Chapter 9 - THE HAPPY ENDING

The kitchen was quiet, smelling of warm milk and Mrs. Ramirez's baking.

When I walked through the swinging doors, Leo launched himself into my arms. I buried my face in his neck, sobbing with relief. My mother hugged us both, looking terrified but unharmed.

Luca stood in the doorway, watching us. He had washed the soot from his face and changed his torn shirt. He looked tired, but the darkness that usually clouded his eyes was gone.

I stood up, holding Leo's hand.

"Thank you," I said to Luca. "For everything."

"You don't need to thank me, Ella." Luca walked slowly across the kitchen. He stopped in front of my mother. "Mrs. Brooks. I am sorry for the fear my family has caused you tonight. And twenty years ago. You will never have to run again. You are safe here."

My mother wept softly, nodding her gratitude.

Then, Luca looked down at Leo.

He knelt on the tile floor so he was eye-level with my seven-year-old brother.

Luca raised his hands.

Hello, Leo, Luca signed smoothly. I am Luca. I have a son who wants to meet you.

From behind Luca's legs, Noah peeked out.

Leo's eyes widened in amazement. He had never met another deaf child his age.

Hi, Leo signed shyly. Do you like video games?

Noah beamed, stepping forward. Yes. I have a big TV. Come see.

The two boys ran out of the kitchen together, already communicating in a world entirely their own.

I watched them go, a profound sense of peace washing over me. For the first time in my life, I didn't feel like I was carrying the weight of the world on my shoulders.

Luca stood up and turned to me.

"Claudia is in police custody," he said quietly. "I handed over the medical files. She will spend the rest of her life in prison for what she did to Noah."

"And Michael?" I asked.

"Gone," Luca said firmly. "He will never touch this family again."

He took a step closer to me.

"So," Luca murmured, his dark eyes searching my face. "You don't have to be a housekeeper anymore, Ella. Your mother's house is paid off. Your brother's medical bills are covered for the rest of his life. You are free to go."

My heart gave a painful squeeze.

Free to go.

I looked at this terrifying, beautiful, broken man. I thought about how he had shielded me, how he had fought the entire mafia council for me.

"What if I don't want to go?" I whispered.

Luca's breath hitched. He closed the distance between us, his large hands gently framing my face.

"I have lived in the dark for a very long time, Ella," he said, his voice thick with emotion. "You brought light back into my house. You brought my son back to me."

He leaned down, his forehead resting against mine.

"Stay," Luca whispered, a plea from a man who never asked for anything. "Stay with us. Be my light."

I closed my eyes, feeling the warmth of his skin against mine.

"I'll stay," I promised softly.

Luca kissed me. It wasn't the kiss of a mafia boss. It was the kiss of a man who had finally found his home.

When we broke apart, Noah was standing in the doorway, watching us.

He had a huge smile on his face.

He raised his hands, pointing at me, then at his father, and finally, crossing his arms over his chest in the sign for love.

Family, Noah signed.

May you like

I smiled back, tears of pure joy pricking my eyes.

Yes, I signed back. Family.
