Chapter 12 - THE FAMILY WE CHOOSE

Two months later.

The snow was falling heavily outside the massive windows of the DeLuca estate, blanketing the grounds in pure, unbroken white.

Inside, the house was warm.

It didn't feel like a fortress anymore.

It felt like a home.

I stood in the kitchen, pulling a tray of cookies out of the oven.

I wasn't wearing a maid’s uniform.

I was wearing a thick wool sweater and jeans.

Sam, my brother, was sitting at the kitchen island, laughing at something Antonio was saying.

Sam had enrolled in the local private high school.

He was thriving.

Leo came running into the kitchen, his leg brace clicking softly against the tile.

He didn't drag his foot as much anymore.

He was getting stronger every day.

“Em! Em! Look!”

He held up a piece of paper.

It was a drawing.

Bright crayons.

A house. A big gate.

But this time, there were no dark clouds.

There was Leo, Antonio, me, Sam, Grace, Rose, and Matteo.

All standing together.

“It’s beautiful, buddy,” I said, kissing his head.

Antonio walked over and scooped Leo up, tossing him gently into the air, making the boy shriek with laughter.

“Come on, Picasso. Nonna wants to see you in the sitting room.”

They walked out, leaving me smiling at the oven.

A pair of strong arms wrapped around my waist from behind.

I leaned back, resting my head against a solid chest.

Matteo rested his chin on my shoulder, breathing in the scent of vanilla and sugar.

“You're burning them,” he murmured.

“I am not,” I laughed, turning in his arms.

He looked down at me, his dark eyes soft and happy.

He wore a casual grey henley, a smudge of drafting pencil on his jaw.

I reached up and wiped it away with my thumb.

He caught my hand and kissed my palm.

“I finished the blueprints for the new pediatric wing at the clinic,” he said.

“The one you're funding?”

“The one we are building,” Matteo corrected.

He pulled me closer.

“I thought we could go look at the site tomorrow. Just the two of us.”

I smiled up at him.

“I’d love that.”

From the sitting room down the hall, we heard Rose’s sharp voice ring out.

“Arthur! Stop letting that boy eat sugar before dinner!”

Then, the sound of Antonio and Leo laughing.

Matteo smiled against my hair.

The ghosts were gone.

The secrets were out.

I had walked into this mansion ten months ago desperate for a paycheck, hiding my past, trying to survive.

I had watched a woman lie to protect her greed.

I had watched a family tear itself apart.

But in the end, the truth didn't just break the lies.

It built something real.

Matteo kissed me, slow and sweet, while the snow fell outside.

I wasn't a maid playing nurse.

May you like

I was Emily.

And I was exactly where I belonged.
