Chapter 12 - [A PROMISE IN SILVER]

Six months later.

The Chicago winter had melted away, leaving the estate’s gardens blooming with bright spring colors.

I stood in the greenhouse, carefully polishing a 19th-century silver tea set. My new workshop was flooded with natural light, a far cry from the dark corners of the house where I used to scrub floors.

Through the glass panes, I could see my mother sitting on a garden bench, laughing as she read a book.

And sprinting across the lawn, chasing a golden retriever puppy, was Leo.

He was laughing out loud. A joyful, vibrant sound that filled the entire estate. He was gaining weight, thriving in school, and never left the house without his late father’s silver rosary—now a symbol of love, not fear.

The heavy greenhouse door opened.

Nico walked in, wearing a sharp grey suit, looking effortlessly handsome. The dark circles that used to shadow his eyes were completely gone.

He walked up behind me and wrapped his arms around my waist, resting his chin on my shoulder.

“You’re working too hard,” he murmured, kissing my cheek.

“I’m restoring the family legacy,” I smiled, leaning back into his embrace.

Nico turned me around so I was facing him. He took the polishing cloth from my hands and set it down.

“You already restored this family, Hannah. You brought light back into this house. You saved Leo. You saved me.”

He reached into his pocket.

He didn't pull out a flashy, modern diamond like the one Veronica had demanded.

He pulled out his grandmother’s antique silver ring. The real one.

Nico dropped to one knee.

“Hannah Ellis, you are the bravest, kindest woman I know. You walked into a storm and gave us a home. Will you marry me?”

Tears blurred my vision. I looked at the man who had fought for me, protected my family, and loved me with a fierce, quiet devotion.

“Yes,” I whispered, laughing through my tears. “Yes, Nico.”

He slid the perfect, heavy silver ring onto my finger. It fit exactly right.

He stood up and pulled me into a deep, passionate kiss.

Outside, Leo cheered, running up to the greenhouse glass and pressing his hands against it, beaming with a massive smile.

I smiled back at the boy who was now my family.
