Chapter 9 - [THE SUNRISE WE EARNED]

The morning sun broke over the Chicago skyline, casting a golden light into the mansion.

For the first time in nine months, the house felt like it could breathe.

Nico stood in front of the grand fireplace, addressing the highest-ranking members of his family. The memory card had been played. The truth was out.

Veronica had been banished from the city, stripped of all assets, and handed over to the authorities with enough anonymous evidence to put her in federal prison for life. Arthur was banished, sent away with nothing.

The family members nodded in respect to Nico, then quietly filed out of the room.

It was over. We had won.

My mother was sitting on a plush sofa, sipping tea, looking more relaxed than she had in years. Nico had brought in his private medical team. Her prescriptions, her debt, her mortgage—he had cleared it all by sunrise.

“Hannah,” Nico said softly, walking over to me.

I stood up. “Yes, Mr. Moretti?”

“Nico,” he corrected gently. He looked down at his grandmother’s silver ring, which I was still holding in my hand.

“You stood up to her when no one else would,” Nico said, his voice thick with emotion. “You saved my nephew. You saved my family’s legacy. You are the bravest woman I have ever known.”

He knelt down in front of Leo, who was happily coloring a new picture on the coffee table. This time, he was drawing a house with the sun shining, and three figures standing together.

“Leo,” Nico smiled. “Do you like having Hannah around?”

Leo nodded vigorously. He ran over and hugged my legs. “Hannah stays.”

My heart melted. I knelt and hugged him tightly. “I’m not going anywhere, sweetie.”

Nico stood back up. “Hannah, you’re not a maid in this house anymore. If you’ll accept it, I want you to run the estate's antique and art restoration. A real salary. And a home for you and your mother here, where you’ll always be protected.”

Tears spilled from my eyes. “Nico… I don't know what to say.”

“Say yes,” he smiled.

“Yes,” I cried, hugging him. He wrapped his strong arms around me, burying his face in my hair.

It was a perfect, beautiful happy ending. Dignity was restored. The family was whole.

But as I pulled back from the hug, my eyes caught something glinting on the floor near the entryway.

A silver bracelet.

The exact same bracelet the Russian Volkov boss had been wearing last night.

But it was smeared with fresh blood.
