Chapter 5 - The Locked Study

The heavy oak doors of the study slammed shut behind us, followed by the terrifying click of the deadbolt sliding into place.

I collapsed onto the Persian rug, clutching my stomach as another agonizing contraction ripped through me. It was too early. I was only eight months along. The stress, the terror, the rough handling—it had triggered early labor.

"Emma!" Frank cried, dropping to his knees beside me. He didn't care about his own trembling hands or his aching joints. He pulled off his expensive suit jacket and rolled it up, gently slipping it under my head.

"It hurts," I sobbed, squeezing my eyes shut as the pain peaked. "Frank, it’s too soon. My baby is too small."

"Breathe, sweetheart. Just breathe," Frank said, his voice remarkably steady for a man who had just learned his brother murdered his wife. He gripped my hand tightly. "You are strong. Women are the strongest creatures God ever made. Margaret delivered Luca in the back of a broken-down pickup truck during a blizzard. You can do this."

I focused on his worn, calloused hands—the hands that had built homes and carved rocking horses. I tried to match my breathing to his slow, steady counts.

Outside the study, the mansion was descending into chaos. Muffled shouts and the heavy thud of boots echoed down the hallway. Silas was locking down the estate, preparing for war with the Bellinis while holding the true head of the family hostage.

"We have to get out of here," I gasped as the contraction finally faded, leaving me exhausted and terrified. "Luca... he’s going to kill Luca."

Frank looked around the dark, wood-paneled study. It was a fortress. The windows were reinforced glass, designed to withstand bullets. The door was solid oak.

"Silas won't kill Luca until Carlo Bellini arrives," Frank said grimly, pulling a clean linen handkerchief from his pocket and wiping the sweat from my forehead. "Silas needs Luca alive to legitimize the transfer of power. He’ll force Luca to sign over the syndicate, then dispose of him."

"How long do we have?" I whispered.

"An hour. Maybe less." Frank looked toward the massive mahogany desk in the center of the room. "Margaret designed this room. When I built the house, she asked me to put something in here for emergencies."

Frank struggled to his feet, leaning heavily on his cane. He hobbled over to the heavy bookshelf lining the far wall.

"I haven't used this in twenty years," Frank muttered, running his trembling fingers along the spines of the leather-bound books. "I hope Silas didn't find it."

He pressed firmly against a thick, unreadable volume on the third shelf.

With a soft click, the entire bookshelf shifted slightly forward.

Frank pushed it, revealing a narrow, dark passageway hidden in the wall.

"A secret door?" I asked, my eyes widening.

"A servant’s passage," Frank corrected. "It leads straight down to the old wine cellar. We can get out."

Another contraction hit me, sharper and more vicious than the last. I cried out, curling into a tight ball on the rug. The pain was blinding, radiating from my lower back all the way down my legs.

"I can't," I sobbed, clutching my swollen belly. "Frank, I can't walk. I can't make it down the stairs."

Frank moved back to my side, his aged face pale with worry. "Emma, you have to try. If we stay here, Silas’s men will eventually come back to finish us off. You have to be brave for your little boy."

I gritted my teeth, nodding weakly. Frank wrapped his arm around my waist, and with a monumental effort, he hauled me to my feet. I leaned heavily against him, my legs shaking uncontrollably.

We shuffled toward the hidden passage. The air inside was stale and smelled of dust and old masonry. Frank pulled the bookshelf shut behind us, plunging us into total darkness.

"Hold on to the wall," Frank instructed quietly, turning on a small penlight he carried on his keychain. "The stairs are steep."

We moved agonizingly slow. Every step sent a jolt of pain through my pelvis. Frank was incredibly patient, whispering words of encouragement, supporting my weight even though I knew his own joints were screaming in agony.

Halfway down the narrow staircase, I heard a sound that made my blood run cold.

It wasn't a guard. It wasn't Silas.

It was a soft, muffled sob coming from the bottom of the passage.

Frank froze, clicking off the penlight. We stood in absolute darkness, holding our breath.

"Hello?" a fragile, panicked voice echoed up the stone stairwell. "Is someone there? Please, help me."

I recognized the voice immediately.

It was Vanessa.

Frank clicked the light back on and pointed it downward.

Sitting on the cold stone floor at the bottom of the stairs, her expensive evening gown torn and covered in dust, was Vanessa Bellini. Her wrists were bound tight with zip-ties, and a gag hung loose around her neck where she had managed to pull it down.

She looked up at us, her eyes wide with shock.

"Frank?" Vanessa choked out, tears streaming through the ruined makeup on her face. "Emma? How did you get in here?"

"Luca put you in the cellar," Frank said coldly, tightening his grip on my waist as another contraction began to build. "This passage leads directly to it."

"You have to help me," Vanessa begged, struggling to stand. "Silas’s men locked me in here. Silas called my father. He told Carlo that Luca murdered me to break the truce. My father is bringing an army to burn this estate down, and Silas is going to let them do it to wipe out Luca!"

I groaned, sliding down the stone wall to sit on the steps as the contraction overtook me.

"Please," Vanessa sobbed, looking at my soaked dress and realizing what was happening. "I know I was cruel. I know I was wrong. But Silas lied to me too. Cut these ties, and I can call my father. I can stop the attack."

Frank looked at Vanessa, his expression hardening. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a small, sharp woodworking knife he always carried.

He walked down the remaining stairs and stopped in front of the woman who had tormented him, thrown his handmade gift in the trash, and protected the secret of his wife’s murder.

He raised the knife.

And then, Frank handed it to Vanessa.

"Cut them yourself," Frank said, his voice like iron. "I have a baby to deliver."
