Chapter 7 - The Panic Room

The chaos above us was deafening. Gunfire tore through the elegant halls of the Moretti estate, punctuated by the shattering of priceless antiques and the shouts of men fighting a war built on a lie.

I remained on the cold stone floor of the wine cellar, cradling my newborn son against my chest. He was miraculously quiet, tucked warmly inside Frank’s suit jacket, oblivious to the violence tearing his world apart.

"Lock the heavy door behind us," Frank instructed me, his voice firm despite the tremor in his hands. "Don't open it for anyone but me or Luca."

I nodded, tears stinging my eyes. "Please be careful, Frank."

Vanessa picked up the unconscious guard’s assault rifle. She handled it awkwardly, her torn evening gown contrasting sharply with the cold steel weapon, but her jaw was set with a determination I hadn't seen before.

"I'm going to kill Silas," Vanessa muttered, her eyes burning with a dark, vengeful fire.

Frank and Vanessa disappeared up the stone steps leading into the main house. I dragged myself to the shattered wooden door of the cellar and wedged a heavy wine barrel against it, praying it would hold.

Meanwhile, on the second floor, the estate was a war zone.

Frank and Vanessa moved cautiously through the servant corridors, avoiding the main hallways where Carlo Bellini's men were systematically hunting down Silas's loyalists. Smoke hung thick in the air, smelling of cordite and burning expensive wood.

They reached the hidden panel behind the grand library. Vanessa pressed the concealed button, and the bookcase swung open, revealing the heavy steel door of the panic room.

It was locked from the inside.

"He's in there," Vanessa whispered, pressing her ear to the cold steel. "I can hear Silas talking."

Frank pulled the antique brass keys from his pocket. "Margaret insisted I keep a master override key when she designed this room. She never trusted electronics."

He slid a heavy, jagged brass key into a hidden manual keyhole near the floorboards. With a loud, mechanical clack, the heavy deadbolts disengaged.

Vanessa kicked the steel door open and raised the rifle.

Inside the stark, brightly lit panic room, Silas Moretti spun around in shock. He was standing over Luca, who was bound to a metal chair, blood dripping from his temple, looking bruised and battered but fiercely defiant.

"Vanessa!" Silas gasped, his eyes wide as he saw the rifle pointed at his chest. "How did you get out?"

"You underestimated the maid," Vanessa snarled, stepping into the room. "Drop the gun, Silas."

Silas raised his hands in mock surrender, a cold, calculating smile returning to his face. "Vanessa, be reasonable. Your father’s men are wiping out Luca's loyalists as we speak. If you kill me, Carlo will never know the truth. He'll still think Luca killed you. You need me alive to broker the peace."

"I don't need you for anything," Vanessa spat, her finger tightening on the trigger.

"Vanessa, wait!" Luca shouted, struggling against his zip-ties. "Don't shoot him. If you pull that trigger, my father's men will hear it. They'll swarm this room."

Frank stepped into the panic room behind Vanessa, leaning heavily on his cane.

Silas’s smile faltered when he saw his older brother.

"Frank," Silas said, attempting a tone of brotherly affection. "You shouldn't be up here. It's not safe."

Frank didn't say a word. He walked slowly past Vanessa, his eyes locked entirely on the man who had murdered his wife twenty years ago.

"Dad, stay back," Luca warned, pulling frantically against his bindings. "He's armed."

Frank stopped two feet in front of Silas.

"You took her from me," Frank said, his voice a hoarse, broken whisper. "You took Margaret. You let me believe she abandoned me for twenty years. You watched me grieve, Silas. You sat at my table."

Silas sighed, dropping the act completely. "She was a liability, Frank. She was going to tear the family apart. I did what a boss has to do. Something you were always too weak to understand."

Silas’s hand twitched toward the pistol holstered at his waist.

But Frank was faster.

The eighty-one-year-old carpenter didn't reach for a gun. He gripped the heavy, solid oak handle of his cane with both hands. With a surprising burst of adrenaline-fueled strength, Frank swung the cane like a baseball bat.

The heavy brass head of the cane connected sickeningly with the side of Silas's knee.

Bone cracked.

Silas screamed in agony, his leg buckling instantly. He collapsed to the floor, clutching his shattered knee, his pistol clattering across the steel grating.

Vanessa rushed forward, kicking the gun away. She pulled a combat knife from the desk and quickly cut the zip-ties binding Luca’s wrists.

Luca stood up, rubbing his raw wrists, his dark eyes burning with lethal intent as he looked down at his agonizing uncle.

"You're finished, Silas," Luca growled.

Before Silas could answer, the steel door of the panic room was suddenly blocked by a massive, imposing figure.

Carlo Bellini stood in the doorway, flanked by heavily armed men. The rival boss looked around the room, his eyes finally landing on his daughter.

"Vanessa?" Carlo gasped, lowering his weapon, tears springing to his aged eyes. "Silas told me you were dead. He said Luca murdered you."

Vanessa lowered her rifle, stepping toward her father. "Silas lied, Papa. Silas orchestrated everything. He murdered Margaret Moretti twenty years ago, and he tried to use us to wipe out Luca tonight."

Carlo’s expression shifted from relief to absolute, unadulterated fury. He looked down at Silas, who was groaning on the floor.

"Is this true, Silas?" Carlo demanded, his voice a dangerous rumble. "You used my family to fight your war?"

Silas gritted his teeth, glaring up at the men standing over him. "I did what had to be done to secure the power! Both of you are weak!"

Carlo didn't hesitate. He raised his pistol and fired a single shot into Silas's shoulder.

Silas screamed, writhing in pain.

"You don't get to die easily, Silas," Carlo said coldly. "My men will take you. You will confess your crimes to the commission, and then you will beg for death."

Carlo turned to Luca. The decades of animosity between the two families seemed to vanish in the face of the shared betrayal.

"The war is over, Luca," Carlo said solemnly, lowering his gun completely. "The Bellini family stands down."

Luca nodded slowly, the tension finally leaving his broad shoulders. He looked at his father.

Frank was leaning heavily on his cane again, breathing hard, looking exhausted but finally at peace. The ghost of Margaret had been avenged.

"Where is Emma?" Luca asked suddenly, panic flashing in his eyes. "Where is the maid?"

May you like

Frank smiled, a genuine, joyful smile that lit up his weathered face.

"She's in the wine cellar," Frank said proudly. "And you need to go meet your new namesake."
